Do You Mean Renting it? sayign it never arrived and stealing the disc? cos thats bad.. cos Netflix actually loose the disc.... downloading or copyig discs is fine tho
I gotta get my word in before the mods descend - as the morals on display here are questionable.
First - renting the disc and saying it never arrived is, another poster pointed out, pure and simple theft. Netflix might lose thousands a year to this and this goes on everyone's subscriptions. It is a tax on the honest to subsidise the dishonest.
As for downloading or copying being OK - at least in the USA for the OP this would be "fair use" as he already owns the disc, IMHO. However simply downloading or copying as a matter of course to acquire media infringes the copyright of those selling DVDs.
This is morally dubious AT BEST and like music copyright infringement takes money away from those justified to earn it, bastards though record companies are. While I am not innocent here myself I do believe that everyone deserves to earn money and live a good life as the results of their work, and I do pay for music wherever possible.
That said I really do love the opportunity to post my favourite list of things record companies and eventually film companies will have to do to survive the digital age: -
1. Supply genuinely CD quality (preferably better, like 24/96) files, not 128kbps MP3s.
2. Abandon DRM - period.
3. Give a lot more away for free - free bonus tracks, free live set with an album, etc.
4. Get smaller, get smarter. Stop treating artists so badly that a lot dont notice any difference between selling records and people downloading them for free.
5. Stop treating everyone like thieves. We are not stealing when we copy our CDs for the car, we are not stealing when we copy CDs to our MP3 players. The industry has however claimed both.
I could go on...
Bottom line - media should be paid for. The OP should not have to pay for another whole box set to replace one damaged disc, but he should certainly not steal one from Netflix, and generally we should all be willing to pay for entertainment.
