House - 5x01: "Dying Changes Everything" - Discussion/Spoilers

What a premiere that was. Didn't see that ending coming at all. And thought Chase being an ass was hilarious.
I think the writers took a little liberty with the over-dependence on House, but it sure brought out a lot in Thirteen. One of my main hopes for this series is that we get to see a lot more about the Doclings, and this was a good start for that to happen.

I'd specualte 5-6 episodes. Probably as long as they would've ran it to finish off Season 4.
As I've said before, the House/Wilson dynamic is an important part of the show. Wilson is the one character who is "House's Equal" (that is, someone who's not in charge of House or a subordinate of House) and he mostly fills the "Watson" role in the character's Holmes similarities.
How they'll turn this around and get House and Wilson "back together again" I'm not sure, House would have to do something dramaticly out of character for him to "win Wilson bacK' like show an ounce or two of humility and humanity. I still don't think it is unreasonable to think this is still a ploy by Wilson and Cuddy to do just that to House, but that seems more unlikely now. It'll be interesting to see where this leads but this show is anything if not formulaic. Sooner or later it's got to retreat back to its formula which includes Wilson and House's friend/confidant/generator of "Ah-Ha! Moments."
I'm still lost on what the goal is with the new Doclings/Numbers. Chase and Cameron seem to have mostly moved on and it wouldn't make sense for them to go back into a fellowhsip with House and the new group are finding their place. I'm surprised they weren't ADDED to the opening credits cast list with the originals. But they're still in the post-credits quest credits.
Who was the actress who played the POTW? She was kind of a cutie.

Good episode, between "Good" and "Excellent". But then I feel that about most episodes of this show. That ending was kind of a punch in the gut (a good thing, in this case).

See, I would rate this episode as "Very Good" (to borrow from my grading scheme) but it's not quite "Excellent" (like say "Three Stories," "House's Head," "Wilson's Heart"). There is a large gap between "Excellent" and "Very Good."
I'm a bit disappointed... not because the episode was bad or so, but I'd have wished for a more immediate continuation of last year's cliffhanger. I mean, 2 months passed by, and IMO 2 months are quite a large amount of time for attitudes to change.
We left House practically filled with remorse, he went above and beyond duty to find out what was wrong with Amber, be it because he felt guilty about the accident, be it because he just cared about Wilson. He was in ICU for the seizure and his head injury... and we get back to him, all well (at least physically) and back in his usual sarcastic routine. I don't know but I would have liked to see the steps inbetween. It's just not reasonable that the whole aftermath happens just 2 months later - conveniently, House and Wilson didn't talk during that time... but that way I feel deprived of the more immediate reaction when they face each other just after it happened. Every reaction is now delayed by 2 months (and filtered by those 2 months of separation) - and that somehow feels wrong to me from a storytelling perspective.
I was never sure exactly what House should feel guilty about. For calling Wilson? For getting drunk? As I said above he paid for his "sins". Quite frankly, while I really liked that counselling with Cuddy, I hated that she tried to play on House's feelings and to guilt-trip him into apologizing to Wilson - apologize for what? Fortunately, Wilson didn't follow on that guilt-trip which would have been really ridiculous given that he demanded of House that he risk his life... quite a demand, even for a best friend.
I see Wilson's point about their friendship - but on the other hand, I wonder if *he* ever felt friendship for House or if it just was more convenient to go with it. Granted, he enabled House's eccentricities but friendship is a two way street. I have no doubt that, ultimately, House risked his life in "Wilson's heart" because of Wilson and his friendship. Perhaps he only then realized just how much this friendship means to him, but any doubt that House indeed does care for Wilson as a friend and not just as some kind of sidekick, vanished with his discussion with Amber in the "afterlife". Granted, Wilson risked his career for House (twice), but so far we haven't learned what exactly he gets out of that friendship. Why did he let House walk all over him? He should really find out, and come back as more of an equal to House when he knows.

I liked House's general grumpyness (medical ethics anyone? *g*), coma-guy, Wilson and House on the couch, Cameron's talk with Wilson, hated Chase's arrogance (why are they still in the credits?!?)... but I'm not so sure about the Wilson-plot.
At least, I'm curious enough to eagerly await the next episode - and that's something. *g*

I had thought that too. BAG was in an interview for TSCCS2 on Monday though and said that they were planning to get married in the Spring.
I think the writers should dump one of Cam/Chase before midseason and then follow it up with the other one leaving by season end, this show could do with a character death and the other two serve minimum purpose. However I would love to see a return to the Cam/House relationship so the Cuddy thing would be fine too.
I wouldn't mind seeing #13 leave for some reason.

The character is designed to be one who is facing certain death. I think that that's one of the things that is making the character hard for people to like. They know that she's going to die from Huntingtons.
Really? I know we're talking about House here but is that medically credible? Isn't the whole point that she won't see anything of it for about 20 years?

I like House. But in this ep he was just a complete arse for the first 80%. He seriously needs a slap up the side of the head. It's not all about him, why does he not get that?
In more realistic terms, this is down to the writers, so they had better make damn sure there's some kind of payoff down the track. If Wilson didn't come back, I wouldn't mind, not that I dislike the character or anything, just get the writers to define House in new relationsghips, expand on the character a bit more.
Good moments, but overall a bit ordinary.
