House - 5x01: "Dying Changes Everything" - Discussion/Spoilers

My son & I have been looking forward to this so eagerly ever since the credits at the end of S4. The reruns that have been shown lately didn't hurt, either. Honestly, this has to be one of the smartest written shows I have ever watched.

Guess there's still hope for me yet.

Agreed, this is one well written show (even if the MediScience isn't always the best) the characters are just very well written and House is one of the mosty dynamic, complicated and intriguing TV characters in (yes I'm going to go this far) in TV History.

No other man is such an incredible insufferable ass but you love him so much. Not even Archie Bunker.

And I'm certain the character wouldn't be half as interesting or complex if not for Hugh Laurie's awesome potrayal. It's amazing to see an episode of House and then to watch an interview with him (like on the DVDs) and just seeing how different he is, and how heavy his English accent is when he's "Hugh" and not "House."

Agreed on all counts. Yesterday during my run, I was thinking about how much Amber the Cut Throat Bitch changed. At the beginning of the season, most people hated her, but by the end, most people cried when she died. That's a major credit to the writers!

I hated CTB too at the begining but it was powerful, powerful stuff to watch her die, how Wilson reacted and how even the other characters reacted (Taub going in and huging his wife.)

Kudos to the writers for making a character disliked and then spin that around into liking her and having sympathy for her.

While the writers do indeed deserve credit for making Amber into a character whose death was so affecting, I think Anne Dudek deserves more than a little acclaim for her performance, as well. After all, the creative team had no plans to bring CTB back once she'd been "voted off" until they saw how great Anne was in the role.

I can't say that Amber was the type of person I'd want to hang around with, but I thougt her character was excellent for the show. She tested House and in truth tested Wilson as well. The best characters are very often ones we'd never want to be friends with, but still people we can't tear our eyes away from. For a variety of reasons.

Yeah he's a bit crass tonight, but his brillance lets him get away with it. Can't believe it took HIM to suggest a tubual pregnancy.

I'm almost 100% Wilson's "leaving" is a game by Cuddy and Wilson to coax an ounce or two of more humility out of House.

I don't know... that's certainly in keeping with the series way of telling its stories. But somehow it doesn' tfeel right. Almost as if they've done something like that before
