Star Trek comics on DVD

That's odd Amazon didn't give you the lower price. I wrote Amazon yesterday and was able to get them to refund me $10...

Thank you for contacting Amazon.com.

"Since your purchase was so recent," huh? I pre-ordered this months ago, so I probably couldn't get the discount. Rats.

I pre-ordered it a month ago (Aug 19). It might be worth it to try Amazon again and mention they gave a refund to me, so why not you?

Well, I wasn't particularly looking forward to reading the remaining Gold Key issues I haven't read before, but I'm actually finding them fairly enjoyable. They're so far removed from any semblance of consistency with the shows that one can just take them as the goofy adventures they are, and some are pretty entertaining.

Be sure to check out Gold Key issue 21 -- the villains are cyborg mummies programmed to turn everyone else into cyborgs! Proto-Borg with bandages!

Hey, and in Gold Key issue 24, there's a one-panel appearance by an Enterprise crewman named... Krad! What are the odds?

Yeah, I told him here when that panel appeared in the "Key Collection" reprint. Probably another Klingon passing himself off as human (see "Errand of Vengeance" novel trilogy or "The Trouble With Tribbles").

If Amazon stopped their price-change rebate policy on Sept 1st you should still be covered if you ordered before then I should think.

Yeah, that amused the crap out of me. Not enough to buy The Key Collection, mind you, but I will be getting this DVD set, sooooooooooo........

I just read Gold Key #32, and it's a terrific story. The execution is about usual for the series, but the concept is rather compelling and could've made a good TOS episode. By this point, the series has come a long way from the early issues. The character work was still next to nonexistent, but the writers had caught on that ST stories should be about social commentary.

Also, they sometimes make better use of the female cast than TOS did. "Uhuru" (sic) and Chapel are often on landing parties and are shown to be quite intelligent and handy with a phaser. And some issues have female scientists participating in the adventures as well.

It's to my eternal regret that I didn't work a line about Scotty's time as a blonde into The Future Begins. Though I think Keith might have killed me. I know Michael would have.

Oh, I wouldn't have killed you.

Of course, the line would've been gone in about two-and-a-half seconds............... :D

The Gold Key issues continue to turn up surprises. Starting with issue 47, appropriately enough, they suddenly start to feel more like Star Trek -- presumably due to the presence of Doug Drexler as a story consultant, according to the credits. The ship interiors actually look right rather than being generic high-tech scenes, the costumes are more consistent, and there are references to planets and past events from the show. Issue 49 is even a sequel to "Metamorphosis," bringing back Cochrane and the Companion, except its recap of the episode is very rough (with totally different dialogue), Nancy's last name is Hedron and she had Sukarno's Disease, and Cochrane looks more like a white-haired David Niven than Glenn Corbett.

EDIT: Meanwhile, I've just belatedly discovered that if I rotate the image 90 degrees clockwise and enlarge it to full width, I can turn my laptop on its side and read a whole page at a time in a larger size, rather than two side-by-side pages in a reduced size. It's a little awkward to hold the laptop that way and work the page-down button, though.

EDIT AGAIN: On second thought, maybe I'd better not do that -- having to hold my head at that angle to read the sideways laptop is bad for the pinched nerve in my neck, and I'm feeling the aftereffects of that now. Owie. Still, it might work for other folks.

Just got this today, and I'm pretty happy. I'm fairly underwhelmed by the presentation, and the condition of some of the comics scanned (I find it hard to believe they couldn't find some in better shape, I wonder how hard they tried), but appreciate it for the sheer volume of what was digitized. This will save me having to hunt down old copies of comics I don't have (which is most, other than the old Gold Key collections from the 70s), and avoid shelling out $$$ for the lesser ones.

Good to see the Peter Pan / Power comics. What a hoot. I still have one of the records kicking around somewhere.

At present Amazon won't ship it to the UK - I'm trying to find out what the situation is and whether it will eventually be released over here.
I wonder if it's the nebulous "rights" issues; I'm given to understand that comic shops in the UK can't get the comics DVD, either.

Almost certainly that'll be the case, because of all the different people who reprinted the various strips over the years. If I get an answer via CBS, I'll post here.
