Anyone here gonna buy the new "Alternate Realities" Fan Collective DVD set coming out this Tuesday (9/16/08)?

Some of those are questionable how do Turnabout Intruder, The Inner Light, Frame of Mind, and Course Oblivion, fit with the alternate realities theme?

It sure would be cool if there was a "mirror universe" Star Trek series. Cool for me, that is. I need to buy this set!

I've always wanted a Mirror Universe tv series too! The Enterprise episodes "In A Mirror Darkly Parts 1 and 2" were insanely awesome, and some of the best Trek episodes ever made, IMO, for all of Trek.

I would love it if they did a series about some random crew on a ship in the mirror universe who starts out as bad guys, but as the series went along they become good guys who tries to start a rebellion against the Terran Empire (which would show why the Terran Empire was basically overthrown by the time the DS9 mirror universe episodes came along). If the series was just about some random evil crew, and they were evil throughout the series, it would probably get boring, lol.

We're actually dedicating some time to the "Alternate Realities" fan collective on Monday's (9/15) live radio show of DVD Geeks - we're on fearlessradio.com at 7pm Central.

We'll have Larry Nemecek on to discuss the history of alternate/parallel/fantasy universes in "Star Trek," and it should be a good time.

Just some quick initial impressions of the set: they're overall good episodes, and it's a very welcome addition to see commentaries for episodes where there haven't been commentaries before ("Parallels," "Yesterday's Enterprise" etc.). Overall, the featurettes aren't amazing, but they round out the set and give a little context to collection.

I can see Inner Light but the others?

Frame of Mind fits. Most of the episode takes place in Riker's mind and is not of this reality. Can't remember TOS:TI. What's that one about?

So, TPTB won't do my idea of The Worst Of Trek Fan Collective? That would be cool. Imagine Spock's Brain, The Outrageous Okana, Take Me Out To The Holosuite, Threshold, A Night In Sickbay, and so many other turds being trashed by commentary by the MST3K cast or even the cast of the actual episodes. THAT's something worth buying. I would show that TPTB have a sense of humor and they would rightfully bury those stinky corn nuggets.

The inevitable "turning bad to good" plotline would be just as boring, if not moreso and is cheap attempt at "character development".

If it's good guys you want, why not just watch regular universe Trek? What's the point of exploring an alternate reality if the goal is to make it as stale as the regular reality. Alternate relaities are fun once in a while, but don't dedicate a whole series to it if it's not going to stay true to that reality.

Also about a weird courtroom scene that plays out like some kind of distorted dream instead of anything with a clear objective.

Not sure if I'll be getting this, mainly because I already have most of those on DVD.

I have:

-All the TOS episodes.
-All the TNG episodes except Parallells.
-All the DS9 episodes.
-The Enterprise MU two parter.

That's 13 out of 20 I have. And somehow, the seven episodes I don't have aren't really must haves either.

I think it might've just been another 2-parter, but it's hard to tell (everything, of course, would have depended on the number of episodes and what other ideas they had).

Hmmmm, well if the main characters in this hypothetical series were to be evil throughout the entire run, I admit it would be kind of cool to see what new evil things they do every week for a little while (not that I'm condoning being evil, mind you ), but to me it's infinitely more interesting to see a person, or people, better themselves (especially if they start out bad) rather than just watch a bad person get more evil if there are no protagonists to oppose them. I mean, who wants to watch that? It would get awfully depressing.

It's about fifty minutes.

Actually, of course, it's about Kirk undergoing an involuntary body transference with a former girlfriend. (I thought the whole Trek world knew that, but...) It's also the very last episode of TOS, so that gives it some historic importance. I thought about getting the new fan collective to have the remastered version of TI on DVD, but I decided I can wait until the TOS Season 3 remastered box set comes out in November (I had been planning to get that anyway).

Has anyone purchased this set? I'm interested to see which episodes now have audio commentaries and as of right now, none of the major DVD review sites have done a write-up on this.

They shouldn't. All of them happened in the normal ST universe.

Otherwise it's a good collection. I'm glad they didn't use any of the 'Temporal Cold War' episodes of ENT for it.
