man these things are wrong, the product most responsible for american obesity, and they on the commercial ask what's wrong with it and the guy just comes up speachless

Or maybe their just saying go and learn for yourself and don't buy into media crap.

Honestly being in science I say bout fricken time.

I just found two of them on Youtube. They are more offensive than old commercials with doctors telling you to smoke.

As I understand it, high-fructose corn syrup has about the same health risks as regular sugar -- over-indulging in either one is a major cause of diabetes.

Well, to be fair to HFCS, eating products with tons of sugar will probably make you just as obese as an equivalent amount of HFCS. However, because HFCS is cheap and easy to produce and distribute food manufacturers throw it in damn near everything whereas they would not do so with sugar.

So yes, avoid HFCS - but don't substitute it with sugar.

And yes, these commercials are misleading and stupid.

There are some studies that show HFCS does have more health risks.
I'm not sure how much cheaper than cane sugar it would be if the tariffs on sugar where removed.

I read somewhere that HFCS has a higher shelf life and is in general easier to put into a variety of foods.

I'm not saying it isn't worse than sugar - just that neither are good for you. I'm just afraid that people will see the media saying HFCS is bad for you and think they can down five Snickers a day because they don't have that particular ingredient.

The key is whether the sugar is refined or not -- whether it has good carbohydrates or bad ones. Natural, unrefined sugars, of the sort used in organic foods and the like, are less bad for you than the usual processed sugars or corn syrup.

I've seen that commercial and I find it really sleazy, engaging in the kind of propaganda tactics you'd expect to see in a political ad. Instead of responding intelligently to criticisms, it just pretends they don't exist and then offers vague generalities and platitudes in rebuttal. It's the sort of commercial you'd expect to see as a parody ad in a Simpsons episode.
