Kinetic Typography - "The Line Must Be Drawn Here"

I just finished the roughly two-week long process of creating a kinetic type project for my Motion Graphics class. The assignment was to take at least 30 seconds of spoken words from film or TV and create a kinetic type animation. I chose the interchange between Picard and Lily in the Ready Room near the end of "First Contact" I edited out a few lines to cut down the time, because I doubt I would have finished in time if I had used the entire scene word for word. I think it's still pretty effective.

Very interesting concept...I thought the interplay of fonts, colors, and the graphics towards the end worked well.

And the exploding "NO!" ruled!

One thing I was curious about...I almost didn't see anything but the text at the very beginning, and only later after I was used to just graphics did the images show up. I'm curious to know, what drove that decision?

There actually is a graphic present throughout the entire first part. It's a blurred image of the Enterprise-E bridge, actually. It moves along with the text as Lily and Picard bicker back and forth. It's a little dark and subtle so maybe it doesn't show up on your screen.

Well done! That is fantastic! The scene you chose is brilliant to start with, and your interpretation of it adds to the impact.

Nicely done!! I, too, liked the exploding "NO". The animation really reflected the emotion of the scene perfectly.

Thanks for the praise guys...I'm only minutes away from this being presented to my entire class! I am wondering (and I guess I'll find out when its critiqued in class) is did anyone pick up on why certain text was colored red? I'm not sure how subtle it was.

Yeah, I was basically using the color red to signify when either of thems aid anything regarding revenge...since Picard was trying to prove that it wasn't about revenge but of course in the end it was glaringly obvious that it really was.

The class really liked it, too. My instructor didn't have any critiques. I think the only one I got from a classmate was he wanted to see some of the text more framed and not extending outside of the screen.

The only critique I would have, and it may be a mis-hearing on my part, but I always thought he said "no further", not "no farther".

Yeah, you're right. I just watched the scene with closed captioning and he does indeed say further. However, in reality it sounds like he's saying "No fah-tha!" No biggies, it's an easy fix. Thanks for that catch.

Yeah, the "further" thing is my only nitpick. "Farther" refers to physical distance.

Otherwise, AWESOME. Loved the exploding "No!" And the I loved the "and we fall back" sequence with the images of space in the background.
