It Must Be for Kids And Kids Only

Is one attitude I just can not understand that certain mediums must be for children only. For example, animation must be for children only. When the movie "South Park" came out, the catch phrase was "would you take your children to see it"? And while I really haven't read any reviews for movies like the Dark Knight, I'm sure some pundits said it too.

And it's something that I'll never understand. Why must these things be only for children? There are good stories there that are being missed just because of that attitude.

I didn't realize that that attitude was still prevalent with successes like The Simpsons, Family Guy, King of the Hill, Futurama, South Park, Adult Swim shows etc.

Well I guess it's the same stereotype as Star Trek is for nerds who live in their mom's basement playing Dungeons & Dragons all day while adjusting their pocket protectors.

There are no mediums that are for children only. Where exactly are you getting this idea from? Whoever is saying it, stop listening to them, they don't know what they're talking about, problem solved.

I get it from the people who say things like "would you take your children to see this movie?" because that's a strong implication the such a movie must be for children only. And I seem to hear it as a common criticism of movies like South Park.

Animation is certainly not for kids and kids only. That's a misguided view. But I think an argument can be made that children are more attracted to animation, making the desire to see inappropriate animated films higher than their non-animated counterparts.

But that's what ratings are for.

If you don't know what you're talking about, don't say anything. If you haven't read any reviews for movies like "The Dark Knight," then how can you be sure what pundits said? By your own admission, you're ignorant to the details of the example that you're trying to provide.

Nobody said "The Dark Knight" was for kids, or made the assumption that it was something made partly to attract children in particular. In fact, had you read any of the reviews, you'd likely have noticed the opposite - people said DON'T bring your kids, it's not a kid's movie.

Honestly I think this view is extremely rare these days. Animation intended for adults has long been embraced by the mainstream - South Park, Simpsons, etc. And I've never come across a single critic or even viewer who seemed to think the TDK was a children's movie.

I think the entire premise of this thread is off base, frankly. I just don't think that's a commonly held view any longer.

There are plenty of posters on this very board that feel this way even when it comes to things like super hero movies. Some people just think that stuff is for kids. I know many people that think the Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, King of the Hill, Adult Swim, etc are cartoons, just for kids. There is a reason Adult Swim starts off saying it is not for kids before it comes on.

Yeah, but only animated comedies are embraced by mainstream adult viewers here. Very few are willing to sit through a mostly serious adult(so Disney doesnt count)drama, or scifi/fantasy animated film or series, like they do in Japan.
