Romulan Ink

I personally have no major issue with there being a bit of variety in appearance among other species, provided that they all seem to be ... well... THE SAME SPECIES.

There's 1000 years between the Vulcans and the Romulans... not long enough for them to become "different species" in any meaningful way unless you're talking about massive intermarrying with non-vulcans (ie, "Remans") which they found in their new home system, or massive genetic engineering.

Of course, Spock is 1/2-human. So... it's possible that Vulcans won't look "Vulcan" anymore... ie, that the change is both to Vulcans and Romulans... and ONLY Spock will look familiar.

That would be a BAAAADDDDD idea but it's certainly on the table, I think. However... I doubt it's going to end up being the case.

Another possibility is that the filmmakers will decide that Romulans and Vulcans aren't related anymore. Of course, if they do that, they'll be bringin' down a firestorm of outrage from all corners... and I don't think that they're that dumb!

SO... why does Bana's character not look Vulcan? I'm not talking about the scowl, or the tattoos... those are reasonable for the character. I'm talking about the forehead/brow prosthetic and the funky ears.

Is it possible that Bana's character is one of these "very impure" Reman/Vulcan "Romulans?" A social pariah to begin with but far more so after the Reman "Shinzon Coup," perhaps?

Or... is it possible that he's one of those guys we heard about for years in fan-fiction... before ENT finally gave us an "official" explanation for the different Klingon appearances, there was the semi-official "genetic engineering" solution where the Klingons had created "Human/Klingon Fusions" and "Romulan/Klingon Fusions." Maybe he's one of the latter? (This might explain why he looks vaguely Klingon and could still be considered a Romulan!)

It's very hard to reconcile the familiar-to-EVERYONE "Vulcan look" and what we're seeing here in Nero, unless there's SOMETHING more to it.

Well, considering all we've seen so far is half his face, I'm not gonna say he doesn't look Romulan quite yet.

TrekMovie has confirmed that all the Romulans (including Collins) have tattoos

While TrekMovie has confirmed that, Gene Roddenberry and all of Star Trek history have confirmed that Romulans look cool.

These Romulans are anything but... they are nothing more than bad Vin Diesel rejects.

I disagree. some Romulans, like these and the ones from TOS, look cool. Others, like the ridge-headed automatons draped in angular quilted uniforms from TNG and on - not so friggin' much.

I'm all for the Romulans looking more bad ass, but I don't like the tattoos. Bana's tat looks very tribal-ish. If all of the Romulan tats are a similar, I might be a little turned off by it. Speaking as someone who has tattoos, in most circles tribal tattoos have become the sort of mainstream cliche. They are certainly not bad ass.

That might be true if, in the circles in question, the tribal tattoos were an affectation or fashion statement to begin with. However, in actual tribes (as those of the Maori, for example) they carry meaning and significance, and signify boatloads of badass. Is it possible that there might be a tribal or cultural element of similar significance to these?

How very Maulish
Ya know... I wasn't going to be the first to say that, though I've been waiting for someone else to! I've just been playing with other "Phantom Menace allusions"... but the "Darth Maul" thing has been in my mind all along as well.

Still, as long as Bana doesn't have a double-bladed Rommie-saber and just snarl a lot, we may still be OK.

To be fair, Darth Maul might have been the best thing about that movie.

And Bana could very well become the next greatest Star Trek villain after Khan. My fav. alien species in ST has always been the Romulans. Its a shame they were never given a bigger presence like the overused Klingons. I am glad we are getting kick ass Romulans for this movie. :D

Be careful... all we know, for sure, right now is that we're getting "kick-ass-LOOKING" characters. And even then, we only know about Bana (though we can probably infer the others from him).

Does "bad-ass-looking" make for "great character?" I'm far from convinced. In fact, just for example, look at MI-III (also by Abrams, which is why I'm picking it as my example). The villain in that film wasn't physically-imposing... certainly didn't have prosthetic-frowny-eyebrows... but he was still (IMHO) a GREAT villain.

You have a point, though aesthetics in character design play a big role in making the character enjoyable or popular. Think of Darth Maul for example, he didnt have much lines or character development but he is by far one of the most popular characters in the SW universe. Why? Because he looked 'bad ass'. :D
