I Have No Interest Reading About Star Trek Characters

I do not like reading about "character development" in Star Trek?

Why?

I've seen most of these characters onscreen for years if not decades.

I've read books about them for years.

How much more does one really need or want to know about a character?

That is one of the reason I loathe most Star Trek Literature. It is all fundamentally about the same characters we've seen for years.

I read Star Trek the same way I read Tom Clancy books. After the third novel, I don't give a damn about Jack Ryan or his family. I want to see how that new Russian fighter handles.

That is one reason I'll never understand people saying the "don't like reading space battles but want to read about character".

For people who say Star Trek was "character driven" that was not true of the original series.

The original series was "plot driven". That is the plots were paramount and the characters were there to support it.

It was only when years later that Shatner and Nimoy got to be real stars that the movies started being about them (and thus their Trek characters).

ST:TNG had to be a character show according to the late Michael Piller who said outright that modern Trek couldn't afford a plot driven show.

Just some thoughts.

No. As in most cases, "plot driven" and "character driven" are false binaries. Both were and are equally important. Plot leads to character decisions, which lead to more plot, which...

You're quite welcome to treat Star Trek as "Tom Clancy... in Space!!!" if that's your thing, but it's not an honest reflection of what Trek has even been, and (thank goodness) it's not what the fiction is ever likely to be.

If you'll "never understand" how it's possible for people to have tastes different from your own very narrow ones, then there's no point in you even participating in discussions about the subject. You don't seem to want to listen to other people's viewpoints and consider their merits; you just want to lecture people about how much you dislike their way of doing things. And by this point you've started two whole threads in less than ten hours just so you can complain about how annoyed you are that other people don't give you exactly what you want. I think that qualifies as spamming.

Honestly, if Trek literature offends you so much, why in the world are you even here?

There are the sayings

"Even a stopped watch is right twice a day"

"Even a blind and deaf squirrel occasionally finds an acorn"

I read dozens of Trek books and I find one or two that are outstanding in my opinion (though not without flaws). I can list some of them if you wish.

I started these two recent threads because I felt I was coming off as being too critical of professional writers work (yours for example) and that explaining my own interests would be a more constructive (and less likely to offend) exercise.

Perhaps I'm in the wrong forum. If so, the moderators can move them to the appropriate place.

Please forgive my "lecturing tone". It is what I do for a living so I have a tendency to express myself in that manner.

Though for what its worth, my father said once that I had a knack for making people angry just the way I wrote.

Never could figure that one out.

As close as I'm venturing to legit troll-baiting, I am always curious to understand points of view that so thoroughly confuse me, so I'll bite - what are some of your favorite trek books, and why?

I'm closing both of your threads for the time being, Dayton, pending a ruling. I need to discuss this over with Rosalind and she's not available at the time being.
