Poking your head through an active wormhole?

I've wondered about this. We know that if you full-on step into a wormhole, it takes about 6 seconds for your molecules to re-integrate to the destination. But what about if you put just a limb through? Or your head? Does it just stay in the buffer until you've entirely stepped through, or could one poke their head into a wormhole and see what's on the other end?

I think this is one of the differences between the tv show and the original movie. I am pretty sure there was a scene in the original movie where Daniel sticks just his head in, looks at the other side and then pulls back.

^Nope, he pokes his head through, we see his face on the other side of the Earth "puddle", then he gets pulled into the wormhole. Its an odd looking moment, you'd need to look it up on Youtube if its there.

Theres an episode where O'Neill infiltrates and takes down the rogue group using the second Gate. The Asgard turn up to take back what they've stolen, O'Neill dials Gate, steps through then sticks his arm into the wormhole to keep it active long enough for them to make up their minds and follow him, his arm wasn't appearing on the other side so *shrugs*

He couldn't put his hand back in since it was incoming wormhole and you can see in the screencap that he held his arm in the stargate to keep it active.

Of course Kawalsky also lost part of his head in The Enemy Within after the gate was shut down.

However, that shouldn't have happened. The Stargate should have detected that an object was still in transit and started drawing power from the DHD on the other side.

The SGC dailing and interface computer seems to ignore something like 200 Wifi signals that should pass not only between two Gates but between two DHD's, since the SGC lacks a DHD it looks like many important commands can be overridden because the DHD on the other side has nothing to communicate with.

^Yes, that's generally what I'd suggest would explain the difference between the SGC's Stargate and anywhere else.

Judging by various POV and MALP footage shots in SG-1, after hitting the event horizon, you see a sort of cloudy white space for a couple seconds. After that comes the wormhole, which ends with ramming right into a bright light and coming out the other stargate.

you're supposed to get sucked in, so it doesn't much matter anyway.

How does the rest of the body keep functioning when you poke your head through the puddle without pulling it out again right away or going through?
Someone who does that probably dies shortly after...
Unless the gate is able to act as a life support system as well.

Probably by keeping things in the buffer, they were able to pull ford out with just his arm staying on our side. His brain didn't realize the time difference. His hand probably felt like it was asleep as it was without blood for a few minutes, his brain and the rest of his body was in stasis, just like the Jumper pilots.

There is a repulsive effect when you push against an event horizon, I think it is there to keep blood from flowing to/from your body parts as they dematerialize. Otherwise you might build up blood pressure on the partially materialized arm.


If may stop all blood from flowing if you go through very slowly, but if you step through it probably won't kill you.

My view is that objects don't actually de-materialize, they exist wholly in a subspace pocket until the object is completely inside the pocket. Only THEN is the object dematerialized and sent to the destination gate, where it is reintigrated in a similar subspace pocket before being pushed out at the same relative velocity with which it entered the gate.

Well, it's at least partially insubstantial, because in 38 minutes, they couldn't reach in and grab the guys in the cockpit. They could only get a grip on Ford because his hand wasn't past the event horizon.
