Will You Buy a Command Chair?

Diamond Select making life-size captain’s chair
Possibly the most surprising bit of product news in a long time was the Vegas announcement that Diamond Select Toys will be making a life-sized version of the Original Series captain’s chair. The chair will be a sturdy piece of furniture complete with lights, buttons and sounds. It will be available in 2009 and pricing is expected to be over $1000. CBS showed off a picture of a prototype and it looked just right, we are trying to get a copy from DST.

Now, I sort of knew about this a long time ago. I had spoken with a fellow who works for Master Replicas, about a year and a half ago, and he told me then he had heard rumors of a life size Kirk replica command chair being made. So this is the realization of those rumors.

Will you buy one? $1000 or more for a chair - but KIRK'S COMMAND CHAIR. How cool is that?

I'll tell you, I'm starting to save right now. I want one. I don't care how extravagant and pointless it is. It's a dream come true. I hope they do a TNG one, as well.

I'm middle-aged now, and can easily see spending my lifetime allotment of "recliner money" on a TOS captain's chair.

I wonder if they'll sell add-on attachments to make it either Cage version (little lamp thingy) or Mirror Enterprise version (high back piece).

It all depends on what/who I get to command. I try to command my cats, but they just look at me with their "Oh, come on, Mom -- you know who is really in charge here, and it's not you!" expressions.

If I could command it to fire phasers at my neighbors, that'd be nice. And photon torpedoes at anybody else who comes around uninvited.

Of course, if I could command the chair itself to do something useful, like the vacuuming or the dishes, that would be even better.

Otherwise, I can't see spending all that money. :vulcan:

It'll give my Mother-in-law something to get me for Christmas.

And yes, I won't have any problems finding a place for it.

It's not that intricate of a chair, couldn't you just make one?
I'm only skilled at making chairs if they're constructed out of plastic canvas and worsted-weight yarn. I might be able to make a small one, but certainly not one big enough or sturdy enough for a human.

My wife would never let me do it. I certainly see her point; $1000 can buy a lot of other useful things (or go towards paying off some debt), but damn, an actual command chair! When I was a kid I used to put a chair in front of the TV and pretend I was Captain Kirk and the TV was the viewscreen, and now for just 1000 clams I can park an actual command chair in front of the TV and pretend I'm Captain Kirk! Of course, this would be extremely lame, since I'm no longer 6 years old, but I almost don't care.
