First Screening for Paramount Brass

"The execs like it" I interpret as their thinking it will make money, based on recent trends, not necessarily that it's something that they or Trek fans would actually consider good.

Agreed. So for all we know, we could be in for Trek's version of Jar-Jar Binks plastered on all the bags of Happy Meals.

I hope not. Look at The Dark Knight, it's sophistication and movement away from targeting kids and massive merchandising (besides the batcycle, there we no new vehicles/toys to pander to children) helped it soar to box office success.

In short, I have no idea WTF this news means!
Good for execs = good for fans?

The Dark Knight... movement away from targeting kids and massive merchandising

You haven't been in any toy shops lately. :p
Go to Wal-Mart sometime. Bat-stuff everywhere... has been for months prior to the premier of the movie.

News that the execs liked what they saw is indeed good news. I don't claim to know what is in their minds, collectively or individually, but for whatever reasons... THEY LIKE IT! They really like it! (sorry Sally Fields, couldn't resist.)

Late last week Abrams screened this cut for studio boss Brad Grey and other big shots at Paramount and according to sources it went very well........

Because we always trust studio honchos to decide on what's a good movie...

A good point, but there's virtually no scenario in which the executives not liking it would be good news. The more confidence Paramount has in the film, the more support they'll give it.

Only a couple hundred days and change.

... and a couple hundred changes. :)

I hear they liked the movie, but they thought the guy with the pointed ears looks too much like the devil. His constant shouting also made them uncomfortable. They wondered if Abrams could edit him out. ;)

And don't forget the women. Not only was he yelling about them too much, the female members of the audience thought the female characters were annoying and far too full of themselves. All the women will have to be removed from the cast as well. The male studio execs will then divorce their wives and marry the actresses involved.

Fair enough. I'm living in Japan and most people over 35 seem to have no clue who Batman is. And I don't see any merch for Batman whatsoever,
what I really MEANT to say is that after viewing the Dark Knight there seemed to be a distinct lack of trinkets and toys than there usually are. Batboats, Bat Wings, Bat Jackets and Bat Flashlights. Like the Burton/Bukhenhimer days of yore. Mr. Freeze Cannons and Robin jockstraps.
The movie seemed like it was truly trying to tell a story, rather showing off. The Joker didn't have a vehicle with his logo on it. Crazy bastard. The lego I saw online gave me the impression he would be driving some sort of 'evil' ice cream truck. I was fine with that.

Are kids into The Dark Knight???

Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that studio execs want the most money, so they pander to the largest group of people, which usually sees quality suffer on a critical scale.

Perhaps this time (Trek reboot), they'll get it right.

I'd rather they thought that it "could make money" and fit into modern movie trends, which to me is not a sin agianst Trek (actually it needs to think more along these terms) nor a sign of artistic bankruptcy on their part but just good plain sense. I'd actually prefer that over what a group of Trek fans might think makes "good Trek".

Agreed. Something to keep in mind, of course, is that two of the highest regarded Trek films, The Voyage Home and First Contact, both made a ton of money and were liked by fans and non-fans alike. This can only be a good thing.
