360 price cuts on all hardware in September?? Hmmm...

No games require the HDD, except for games that have DLC. If you're interested in Fallout 3 for the 360 and have any interest in getting the expansions, you pretty much need a hard drive. Even the Oblivion GOTY installs the addons to the HDD.

At the moment, it's still more cost effective to buy the console with the HDD.

Announcement at Leipzig confirmed. You heard it here first!

Seriously though, I might just mosey out and pick one up since I'm getting tired of borrowing other people's consoles... and Fallout 3 is out (relatively) soon. All I'm wondering, since I'm a cheap-ass and everything, is a) how many games require the HD for caching purposes, and B) if Microsoft's HD prices are still exorbitant to the point where picking up an Arcade and a drive attachment still equals or exceeds the cost of the next highest model.
Just get a 60GB system when the price drops, you don't want a tard pack.

Demos, Xbox Live Arcade games, downloadable content, and optional installs on all games (coming in the next update) make owning a hard drive for your 360 a necessity.

You have Carmack saying that RAGE has to ship with only 2 DVDs on the 360 because MS charges an additional royalty fee for each disc you use. Notice how the only multidisc games that are on the 360 are the two Mistwalker RPGs.
So, it looks like not many people are rushing to break that limit. Mandatory installs would help, since they could just compress the data ala PC games, but that's probably not going to happen.

Yeah i read that about rage, i have never been under the illusion that the DVD9 would one day start to be a problem with game Dev's, i definitely think that MS are going to use this install games to the HD and a stop gap to give them more of a shelve life with the 360..........i am hoping that MS at least cut the prices of those HD which are frankly ludicrous, i can live without a HDMI connection but that 120 HD is going to be a must at some point.

On an unrelated note, I'm pretty sure that the HDDs on 360s, like the PS3s, are 5400 RPM. The PS3 actually overheats if you use a 7200 and the performance increase is negligable if not non-existant.

Yeah you are really better just sticking with the 5400RPM, and for the price MS are charging for the 120gig HD i can get a 320gig 2.5 HD for £99 and get a few 360 games, i mean MS really need to get those HD prices down because they are way to expensive.

Not a 2.5" but ebuyer are selling 1tb external drives at £95.09 now.

My god.......1TB for under £100......I mean really how can MS justify the price of their 360 HD peripherals........its just ludicrous.

I may just buy that one for my PC and do away with my 250gig and my two 80 gigs......give me a bit of run in there.:)

More money to cough up, are you mad.........i have VGA on my TV so i can live with that on the 360.:)

Under £90 for the 360 120 HD, i think that's the cheapest i have ever seen it at, if i can get rid of my 20gig to some poor sap for about £30 i might just be tempted to get that one.......nice find.:)

Still it pales into comparison when you see 1 TB for about the same price.

One can hardly expect a 2.5" HDD to compete against a 3.5" HDD with regard to $/GB, Microsoft's greed doesn't account for more than half the discrepency there. If they were using 3.5" HDDs they could maintain their ridiculous profit margins but we'd have 200GB HDDs instead of 20GB as standard.

I suspect that for X360 the decision to not include an HDD as standard is at least one of the reasons behind the 2.5" form factor. Optional means external, and 3.5" HDDs require 12V whereas external interfaces like USB are limited to 5V. Doesn't explain Sony's insistence on a 2.5" HDD though.

External 120gb 2.5" form factor £44.56

I got a 320GB laptop HDD for my PS3 for $125 shipped. Paying more than that for 1/3 of the storage is a hard sell, to say the least. I hope the upcoming 360 price drops include accessories as well.

You and me both m8, i am considering sticking my 360 20gig onto ebay with some games and some peripherals to see if i can off load it for enough to get the 120gig version......of course i will have to cough up £70 to get it fixed first from that two red light error.

Only downside of this is that i lose all my saved games:(

Well if you buy the hard drive first, you can transfer your content. And on the upside it formats the 20gb hard drive, so you're not giving away anything on your hard drive.

Ohhh, does the 120gig standalone HD come with one of those transfer wire things.......i did not know that.
I believe it does, although I've not bought one, so can't say for certain.

From Xbox.com

The Xbox 360 120GB Hard Drive includes a data transfer kit to easily migrate all of your saved data from your 20GB HDD to your 120GB HDD. It comes preloaded with great HD game demos, videos, and an assortment of Xbox LIVE Arcade game trials.

^^^..I really am in a predicament....Spend £70 on getting my 360 repaired and then spend £85 on a 120gig HD.........or spend £70 on repairing it and then eBay it and hope to get enough for a new 120 model........

The scotman in me says ditch the whole bloody lot......

I know, I'd be thinking the same thing myself. I certainly contemplated it when I thought mine was out of warranty when I got the RRoD.
