Who do you like better, Seven or Kes?

Well since Kes is probably my least favorite character ever in the history of Trek, I would have to say Seven, Seven, a thousand times Seven; Which comes to about seven thousand, but that's beside the point.

People,

I'll say Seven, but only by a nose.

Kes had a number of interesting things going for her: her short life span, her warmth, her psionic powers. And she was cute, too. However, I really thought she shined in only a handful of eps, most notably, Warlord, where she essentially played a different character. That ep showed Lien's acting chops.

Seven was a more compelling character, despite acting like an automaton. I always saw Seven as a metaphor for the abducted child who is then brought back to her family and has to reintegrate after years in a different environment. In the case of Seven, it's an apt metaphor, in that she was literally abducted from humanity and forced by her captors to participate in the same crime perpetrated on her against other species. Very much a Stockholm Syndrome situation.

And, as others noted, she has big knockers! Woo-hoo!

Red Ranger

Disagree. Kes was the more compelling character. She was a thinker and a dreamer and aspired to be something more than her people allowed her to be, and she did it. But Red Ranger was right saying Seven was an automaton. The only thing Seven had that made her interesting were her enormous knockers, and those were not enough for me.

The show was never in danger of cancellation surely?

Kes was delightful, and Seven was a trick. They figured out the lowest common denominator and manifested it. The degree to which you were pleased by the Borgette is the degree to which you are predictable and how well Berman can out think and manipulate you. Of course that also means that if she didn't satisfy you, then you're just really really weird.

Poochie anyone?

^All shows are in constant danger of cancellation. You're only as good as your last few episodes' ratings.

My vote goes to Seven. One of Star Trek's great characters.

No, the show was never in danger to be cancelled. That's a rumor which has been going round for some time in recent years but it has never been confirmed.

And there were never any discussions about the risk of Voyager being cancelled before or during the times for "the changes in season 4".

Those in charge didn't like the fact that Voyager didn't have as high ratings as TNG during its heydays. So they decided to bring in a "sexy babe" to attract male teenage viewers (now that is something they actually have admitted from time to time).

In fact, the strategy misfired because Voyager's ratings were lower in season 4-7 than they were in seasons 1-3, except for a short-lived peak just wen Seven arrived.

If Voyager ever was close to be cancelled, that risk must have been bigger in season 5 than season 3.

^That is true. I recall at the time there was a bit of a panic during the month of hell - the patch after "Dark Frontier" when we got "The Disease", "Course: Oblivion" and "The Fight" in succession - three of Star Trek's worst episodes, not just Voyager's. That patch of episodes did the ratings no good at all.

Why have to choose? I honestly think we should have gotten both - Kes was the wrong character to ditch.
Agreed. There was an absolute gold mine of potential material to explore with a Kes / Seven friendship. The fact it didn't happen counts for me as one of Voyager's biggest missed opportunities.

I like both characters. Kes was an intriguing idea for a character, as was Seven. Both were played by above-average actresses. Both contributed a great deal to the show. That's about all I can say on the matter.

Actually at one point, I believe they were planning to kill off Harry instead of have Kes leave. That would have made for a more interesting twist, imo.

Yes, I heard that too. But then they found out that Garrett Wang had a position in a sexiest male poll somewhere, so of course he had to stay if he had sex appeal!

Hmm, never thought of it that way but I think you're right.

Now how on earth am I to live that one down? ;)

I third this. Between the two, I enjoyed the character of Kes more, but I thought Seven was one of the better characters on the show as well.

If they had to get rid of somebody, it should have been Harry.

This is just a modern day retelling of the classic conundrum... Maryanne or Ginger?

And Janeway would be Mrs Howell? Kim as Gilligan?

I got halfway through starting a thread on this last week, since assigning the roles could lead to some artistic choices. Well, apart from Harry being Gilligan.

Janeway is Mr Howell.

I figured Kim because like Gilligan he really wantd to get home more than anybody...So Paris would be the skipper, "C'mon Harry" instead of "Hey little buddy"

But then there is Torres...I guess she could be Coconut Cream Pie? And Chakotay could be a palm tree.

Last edited:
Torres would be one of those Jungle women that swim over from a near by island to make Gilligan and the skipper feel inappropriate and fall over each other to show her a good time...

How isn't Chakotay Mrs Howell?

The Doctor isn't the Professor. Originally they had the actor audition shirtless because he was added to the cast as beefcake. Bless Picardo's little cotton socks, but he can leave his damn shirt on.
