The TNG Relaunch - My version

Guess what? You are doing better, much better! This stuff deserves to be published by Pocket Books.

(I lasted posted a message on TrekBBS in December 2007. Before that, it was during February 2005, then before that November 2002. So really, this is my 4th post in the last 5 years. I came out of hibernation to express my gratitude :) )

Just caught back up. Looking forward to seeing what's found on the station and the interaction with Madden and Worf.
Thanks guys, I hope I can keep it up and get you to enjoy the rest of the tale. We've just moved into what I suppose could be called act two - the hunt is on.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Jeremy Lucas Wing
Cold Station Twelve
Stardate 57079.7

When the shuttle hatch opened, Commander Worf stepped out first, followed by Doctors Crusher and Kelos, technician Denise Sakuro, then by Commander Madden and his four-person security detail. Crusher halted in surprise as she saw a woman in command red walking toward the group, her expression familiar and yet different. Her mocha-coloured skin, brow bulges and the crevices between her brows and on the bridge of the nose marked her as a Haliian. Crusher had only ever seen one Haliian in Starfleet, eleven years before, and now here she was again.

‘Doctor Crusher, it is good to see you again,’ Commander Aquiel Uhnari said and extended her hand.

‘Likewise,’ Crusher responded and grasped the proffered hand. ‘I am surprised to see you here.’

‘I was assigned here during the war as the communications officer but when my commanding officer retired, he promoted me to command and Starfleet agreed that I should stay here. I have changed, Doctor.’

‘So I see, but we’re here on a fairly serious matter,’ she replied, glancing at Worf.

Worf stepped forward and handed Uhnari a padd. ‘We are here to investigate the disappearance of Augment embryos and their possible uses in unlawful experiments,’ he said tersely.

Uhnari nodded and gestured for the group to follow her. ‘Doctor Kelos usually keeps me informed of all projects currently being undertaken, and I do my best to understand them, but I’m afraid that not being a doctor does have its disadvantages here.’

‘Where is Doctor Dorian now?’ Crusher asked.

‘He’s probably with Doctor Reid in the Triple Helix at the moment,’ she replied and at the blank faces elaborated. ‘It’s what we call the galley and mess since it takes up three levels. They seem to have a budding romance going on.’

‘Is Doctor Reid involved as well?’ Worf asked Kelos.

‘She is working on a cure to the Terellian Death Syndrome using the Urodelan flu which is benign but has a similar genetic heritage.’

‘An interesting concept,’ Crusher mused aloud, ‘but it doesn’t answer the question.’

‘No, I don’t think she’s involved. Her ancestor was the armoury officer on the Enterprise in the twenty-second century. I doubt very much she would entertain anything to do with the Augments.’

‘I see,’ Worf replied toward Uhnari. ‘Could you please have them both join us in the embryonics laboratory.’

Uhnari nodded and tapped her combadge, tying it in to the main communications system. ‘Are you going to confront them?’

‘We’re running against the clock,’ Crusher answered. ‘How far down is the lab?’

‘The lab is on forty-three, but the Augment embryos are in a secure storage bay five levels below that.’

‘We need to see that storage compartment first,’ Crusher said.

‘We’ll split up,’ Worf replied. ‘Doctor, take Miss Sakuro and two security officers to the storage bay, the rest of us will go to the lab.’

‘Lopex, Dey, go with Crusher and Sakuro; Parminder, Braddock, you’re with me.’

‘Aye sir,’ they replied one after the other.

Worf was surprised at the ease with which Madden commanded his security people but said nothing. Picard had just asked Worf to evaluate the man on this mission.

Crusher led Sakuro and the security officers to the turbolift which required special authorisation to descend beyond level forty-six. Crusher input the command code required and the turbolift descended quickly.

‘According to history, all the Augment embryos were destroyed,’ Sakuro said.

‘How do you know that?’

‘I studied the Augments for my dissertation at school, Doctor.’

‘I see,’ the doctor replied with a smirk. ‘Well, it appeared that they had all been destroyed but when Soong escaped from the Klingon ship, he took a number with him, so they survived when Malik later destroyed the bird of prey. Once the Augment Crisis was resolved, Captain Archer delivered the remaining embryos back here and with Starfleet’s agreement, initiated several new protocols which are still in place today.’

‘How many survived?’

‘It is believed that between three and five hundred are still here. But we’ll soon find out.’

The turbolift doors opened and the scene which greeted them was nothing short of disastrous. Crusher tapped her combadge only to find that it emitted nothing in response, not even a negative sound indicating a problem. Sakuro rushed to the two bodies in the room and looked up at Crusher, shaking her head. The security officers pulled out their phasers and spread out across the large storage bay.

‘There’s no one here,’ Lopex, a Denobulan, told her.

‘Both of them were killed with a phaser,’ Sakuro informed her and then consulted her medical tricorder. ‘Recently, no more than a few hours ago.’

‘Who are they?’

‘I don’t know, no name tags or any form of ID.’

‘What of the embryos?’

Dey looked up from the computer console. ‘There were three hundred eleven embryos here and seventeen in the lab on level forty three. All the embryos have been taken. There are none left down here.’

Crusher sighed. ‘Let’s go to the lab. This place is a crime scene.’

Once back in the turbolift, Crusher contacted Worf.

Is there a problem, Doctor?’ the Klingon asked.

‘The embryos are gone, there are signs of a struggle and two dead bodies with no identification. The bay is covered with a damping field of some kind.’

The bodies are Dorian and Reid,’ Worf replied. ‘According to two other doctors, Turk and Espinosa, Dorian and Reid haven’t been seen in several hours.’

‘They were killed with phasers a few hours ago. I suggest we lock this place down, now.’

Agreed,’ Worf replied and an alarm system could clearly be heard.

‘That sounds like an old-style tactical alert,’ Dey replied.

Doctor, Commander Madden has lowered the transport shield. We will have security officers scouring every inch of this place in moments. I will have Taurik beam down to remove the damping field so you can retrieve the bodies.’

‘Thank you, Worf,’ Crusher replied as the turbolift came to a halt. They stepped out just as a team of security personnel, and Taurik beamed down twenty metres away from them.

Excellent stuff. However, I detect a bit of Scrubs influence. Were you sipping an appletini when you were writing this ;) ?

Chapter Twenty-Four

Embryo Storage Bay
Cold Station Twelve
Stardate 57079.8

Lieutenant Taurik examined the sole computer console in the cavernous bay and crouched down to pull a panel from its base. Inside was a complicated series of interconnected relays which was standard and a small black oblong device which was not. Taurik pointed the tricorder at it but it didn’t register at all. He reached for it but was rebuffed by a small forcefield. He raised an eyebrow.

‘It appears to be well protected by an independent power source. The device is a sensor blind, designed to fool tricorders and sensors into reporting that nothing is there. This one has been reprogrammed to provide a false reading for the embryo storage facility.’

‘Can you tell where the power source is?’ Crusher asked as Sakuro took care of the bodies and prepared them for transport to the ship’s morgue.

‘Behind the forcefield,’ the Vulcan answered. ‘I believe that our best course of action is to overload the forcefield with concentrated phaser fire.’

‘Won’t that damage the device?’

‘Most likely, but it is the only way in which to deactivate the forcefield quickly. We will use a low yield at first and continue rising until the forcefield is down.’

‘Very well, go ahead.’

Taurik and one of the security officers who’d beamed down with him aimed their phasers at the forcefield and fired, at the lowest setting. Nothing happened and they increased to setting number two. Crusher watched helplessly as they increased slowly to the level nine setting. After five seconds the forcefield wavered and disappeared. Taurik’s tricorder emitted a warning chirp and he raised an eyebrow in surprise as all present heard the sound of a bulkhead moving.

‘The sensor blind device has been deactivated, as has the life support system in this section. The device has convinced the computer into believing that there has been explosive decompression. We have been sealed in.’

‘Crusher to Enterprise.’

Go ahead, Doctor,’ Picard answered.

‘We’ve been sealed in down here, can the transporter room get a lock on us?’

Stand by...negative, transporter operator reads nobody down there.’

‘Acknowledged, Enterprise, Crusher out.’

‘Sensor blind is still in operation, Taurik, can you deactivate it?’

‘I am uncertain,’ the engineer replied as he lay on his back and edged forward. ‘It would appear that the device is wired into the power circuitry. I will have to manually decouple several power relays in order to remove it.’

‘Get on it,’ she replied and turned to Sakuro. ‘Technician?’

‘Both bodies are prepped for transport, Doctor. I’ve activated the stasis fields to retard further decomposition.’

Crusher nodded in agreement, the bodies were starting to smell. ‘Did you get anything meaningful from the tricorder readings?’

‘Doctor Reid was killed first, at close range. Doctor Dorian was killed almost an hour later.’

‘After he’d given up the codes to release the embryos,’ Lopex replied. ‘Poor guy.’

‘What he was doing was illegal,’ Sakuro responded.

‘No one should go out like that. Whoever stole the embryos should at least be on the security feeds.’

‘Worf and Madden are looking through them,’ Crusher replied. ‘So far, they have discovered no unauthorised personnel. There has to be some evidence here.’

‘How did they remove them?’ Sakuro asked. ‘Maybe they left their own DNA behind?’

‘Scan the entire room for DNA traces, I know it will take time, but there isn’t anything else we can do until that device is removed.’

‘We’ll assist, Doctor,’ Lopex said and gestured for his security team to take out their tricorders. ‘I’ll keep a phaser out.’

‘Sir, that’s against protocol,’ Dey replied.

‘I think we can bend the rules a little,’ Lopex told him. ‘After all, there isn’t actually anyone here. We cleared the bay ourselves.’

Dey relaxed his posture slightly. ‘Aye sir.’

‘I believe I have isolated the sensor blind,’ Taurik announced.

‘Pull it!’ Crusher ordered, suddenly anxious to be back aboard the ship.

Taurik reached in and the device came out without a problem. He heard everyone release a breath most probably weren’t aware they were holding.

‘Enterprise to Doctor Crusher, are you alright down there?’ Picard asked.

‘We’re fine, Captain. Is there a problem?’

We’ve lost contact with Commander Worf and the other away team.’

Crusher didn’t hesitate for a moment, her bridge training kicking in. ‘Beam Technician Sakuro and the bodies to the morgue. Taurik will stay with us.’

‘Doctor, be careful.’

‘We will, Crusher out.’

Sakuro and the two bodies disappeared in pillars of light, leaving them alone in the empty bay.

‘We should split up, Doctor,’ Lopex suggested.

‘I would we stay together until we know exactly what we’re dealing with, then we divide and conquer.’

‘Aye sir,’ he replied and moved into the turbolift. ‘We’ll go first, you follow. No sense in us all getting killed if something goes wrong,’ he added and pointed to two of the recent arrivals.

The turbolift doors closed and a few minutes later, Lopex’ voice could be heard over the station’s comm system. ‘All personnel evacuate the station, all personnel evacuate. Pathogen release in seven minutes.’

Crusher looked at the others. ‘Let’s go.’

Taurik counted eleven seconds elapsed before the turbolift arrived, but Dey’s utterance of ‘finally’ indicated that it felt longer. By the time they reached the pathogen wing, the automated evacuation alarm had kicked in. Taurik headed for the main console to see what he could accomplish.

‘The sensor blind was tied into this console. As soon as it was removed, the pathogens were automatically released on a countdown timer. We have five minutes before everyone begins to die from lethal exposure to thousands of pathogens.’

‘Someone is really trying to cover their tracks,’ Crusher said. ‘Can you upload the entire database a secure section of the Enterprise’s data core?’

‘We should have enough space, what do you plan to do?’

‘I’m hoping that something here will give us a clue as to where he’s been and where he is going next.’

Lopex entered the room, carrying Worf with Madden helping him.

‘What happened?’

‘Uhnari, sir,’ Madden answered. ‘She fired at Worf and then ran for the shuttlebay.’

‘Our shuttle?’

‘There were two others in there, sir.’

‘That wasn’t Commander Uhnari,’ Doctor Kelos said as he entered the control room with her unconscious body. ‘It was a shapeshifter.’

Cold Station Twelve

Worf watched Lieutenant Taurik’s hands fly across the console trying to prevent the release of the pathogens and turned to glance at Doctor Kelos as he lay Commander Uhnari on the floor. Doctor Crusher knelt by her and began to wave her tricorder across the young woman’s body. Kelos, now relieved of his burden, immediately went to Taurik’s aid.

‘Well?’ he asked impatiently.

Taurik straightened and Worf could see through his Vulcan stoicism. He was defeated. ‘If I had more time I could disable the life support system.’

‘There’s nothing we can do,’ Kelos added in plain language. ‘Whatever the Changeling did is preventing us from venting the station.’

‘Madden to Enterprise, you need to beam us all up, now!’

Stand by,’ the transporter operator replied.

Taurik raised an eyebrow and moved to the console. ‘There is now an isolation field protecting this room. We are in no danger. However, the Enterprise will not be able to beam us out, nor will we be able to contact them.’

Worf turned to Kelos. ‘What are you doing?’

‘Making sure that even if this station is completely infected, the Augments will not be harmed.’

‘I thought the embryos had all been taken?’

‘They have. My children, however, remain here. Hercules, step forward.’

From a hidden doorway, a young man stepped forward. He wore the uniform of a Starfleet officer, and filled it out well, with muscles across his arms and chest clearly showing through. His expression was undeniably non-Starfleet. Behind him, five more Augments stepped through and took flanking positions around Kelos.

Ignoring the Augments, Worf continued to glare at Kelos. ‘Who took the embryos?’

‘The Changeling, at my request. She has the last of them now.’

‘And what do you plan to do with these?’ he gestured around him.

‘Teach them the way of the galaxy. Where Khan and Soong failed, I will succeed.’

‘Did you create the Bloodfire virus?’ Madden asked, feeling useless.

‘That’s what the Kevrata call it?’ Kelos asked. ‘How delightful. No, I did not create such a weapon, it was designed at my request.’

‘By whom?’ Crusher asked. ‘No sane person would create something of such destruction.’

‘I can assure you, Doctor, whoever released it on Kevrata was not working for me. I would never use such a fine piece of art as a blunt instrument, only as a precision laser scalpel.’

‘You’re stuck here with us,’ Lopex weighed in, moving toward the Augment closest to him.

‘That is where you are mistaken,’ Kelos replied. ‘I have an escape route.’

Hercules stepped forward with a smile on his face and activated his comm-cuff. ‘Energise.’

The seven of them vanished in a Dominion-style transporter beam.

‘They could be anywhere within twenty light-years,’ Lopex muttered.

‘The isolation field is down and we have eleven seconds before the pathogen is released.’

‘The transporter chief...’ Worf began as he felt the familiar tingle of the transporter beam take hold.

‘Has a lock on all of you,’ Picard replied as they materialised in an isolation ward, just by sickbay.

‘Captain, a shuttle fled from the station earlier, were you tracking it?’ Madden asked.

‘Yes, it ignored hails and jumped to warp before we could tractor it,’ the captain replied. ‘Who was on board?’

‘A Changeling, and Augment embryos,’ Worf added and filled Picard in on the rest as Crusher scanned them all for the pathogens known to be held at the station.

‘We’re all clean,’ she announced and deactivated the seal.

‘Have Commander Uhnari cleaned up,’ Picard ordered. ‘I want to know how this could have happened.’

‘Aye sir,’ Crusher replied.

‘Commander Worf, a moment please,’ Picard asked, moving away from the others. ‘Do you think Madden knows what he is doing?’

Worf glanced at the new security chief. ‘Yes sir, he is far more suited to this role than that of first officer, in my opinion. He would have been a welcome addition to my team were I still security chief.’

‘Thank you, Commander. Dismissed.’

‘Commander Madden.’

‘Sir?’

‘As of stardate 57079 you are hereby assigned to the USS Enterprise, NCC 1701 E, as chief of security, with all that entails, is that understood?’

‘Yes sir.’

‘Excellent, dismissed.’

Picard walked over to Crusher who was injecting Uhnari with a hypospray. He didn’t need to look behind him to see that both Madden and Worf were still there, even though they had been dismissed. Inwardly, he smiled. It was clear that both accepted the roles they now played as part of the new crew. With Riker and Troi gone, and Data dead, he wondered if it was time to retire, but the universe just kept reeling him in and with a synergy beginning with both the old crewmembers and the new, he felt that now was not the time to hand over the reins.

Uhnari woke and looked up at them. ‘What happened?’

‘We were hoping you could tell us,’ Picard said softly as Crusher helped the commander to stand up.

‘The last thing I remember was a security officer telling me something about the Augment embryos and then nothing.’

‘That wasn’t a security officer,’ Madden told her. ‘It was an Augment. Your predecessor allowed several to be grown to term in incubation chambers and then born, so to speak. They were raised on the station and took over its security.’

Worf raised an eyebrow. ‘How did you learn this?’

‘It is a hypothesis that fits the facts of the case and the personalities of those involved. The database will probably confirm it.’

‘I know the incubation chambers had been used, but I was assured that no living creature had been born.’

‘You were lied to, Commander,’ Picard said. ‘I’d like you to give Commander Madden a full report on everything you know about the Augments and the embryos. We’ll see about getting you and the rest of the scientists some help, and reassignment.’

‘I’d like to stay on board until we catch them, Captain,’ Uhnari replied, her eyes hard. ‘This happened on my watch and it’s my responsibility to see that those responsible are punished fully under Federation law.’

Worf saw Picard hold her gaze and then nod. ‘Very well, Commander. Once you’ve been debriefed, please join me in my ready room.’

‘Aye sir.’

‘Now, all of you, dismissed.’

Interesting story. I've never read the novels but this sounds better. I hope that this will finally be the end of Sela. Tasha and Sela just kept coming back, and back, and back.

Oh, Sela's not gone yet, maybe at the end of this one, maybe not. I like the character a lot and never thought that TNG dealt with her quite right. But keep reading.

Very nice. I like how you're developing 'old' and 'new' crews. It looks like Madden's found his niche and he and Picard seem to be taking the first steps towards trusting each other.

And now, to quote Sherlock Holmes, "The game's afoot!"

Chapter Twenty-Six

USS Enterprise
Groombridge 34 system
Stardate 57080.1

The Happy Bottom Riding Club was the official name—for some—of the Enterprise E’s crew lounge and Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge often found himself sitting at the window watching the stars drift by, as he was doing now. With beta-shift now well underway and the ship no longer at red alert, he was able to relax after making sure that the engines weren’t going to fall apart. He sipped his synthale and made notations on a padd in front of him, pausing occasionally to glance out of the window.

‘You know, you should interact more,’ a soft voice said and the woman sat opposite him.

‘When did you come aboard, Guinan?’ he asked with a smile.

‘Just before you left Earth,’ she replied with an easy smile. ‘How long are you going to sit here working when there are people around.’

‘I’m relaxing, Guinan.’

Guinan looked up as the doors opened and then turned back to La Forge, standing up. ‘If you insist.’

La Forge shook his head and returned his attention to the large padd. A shadow loomed over him a few seconds later and he was about to say something when a familiar woman, in command red, sat down opposite. He recognised her immediately and smiled, his eyes crinkling in memory of the good times they had briefly shared.

‘Commander,’ she offered her hand.

He stood and opened his arms. ‘Aquiel.’

She smiled, stood and embraced him. ‘it’s good to see you again,’ she whispered.

They broke the embrace and returned to their seats. ‘I heard what happened out there, I’m sorry.’

‘So am I, but I have to wonder what my predecessor was up to. Cold Station Twelve has been an important research facility for a long time, but this incident might cause it to lose its status. It’s image has already been tarnished, and I intend to find out who was responsible.’

La Forge reached across the table and covered her hand with his. ‘You know Captain Picard will do his best to help you. We’ll figure this out, together.’

Uhnari smiled and remembered what they had shared. ‘Geordi, tell me what’s been happening. Where’s your VISOR?’

He winced as she mentioned the prosthetic device. ‘I was kidnapped by a mad scientist a few years ago and he used my VISOR to destroy the ship. Since we now have the technology to give me artificial implants, I took advantage of it.’

‘I’m so sorry, I’ve kind of been out of the loop for a while.’

‘Where have you been?’

She looked around and then leaned in closer. ‘A couple of years after the Relay Station 47 incident, I was asked to go undercover on Halii to stop a terrorist organisation from making us secede. Most of what happened is still classified.’

‘I guess we’ve both had a lot of ups and downs.’

She nodded. ‘But we’re both still here. We survived the war.’

‘Many didn’t, I lost a lot of friends.’

‘Commander Riker, I haven’t seen him around?’

La Forge smiled. ‘He and Counsellor Troi are now on the Titan, exploring the Gum Nebula.’

‘Lucky them, while you get to stop madmen.’

‘Someone has to,’ La Forge replied, both drink and padd forgotten. ‘How did you know I was down here?’

‘I didn’t, I came to get a drink and think about things, but then I saw you and I just had to come over. That other woman recognised me, but I don’t remember seeing her in Ten Forward.’

‘She was here, but she’s a very unusual woman. Captain Picard often goes to her for advice.’

Uhnari smiled again, glad she could just relax. ‘So what’s on the padd?’

La Forge slid it toward himself, preventing her from peeking. ‘Nothing much, just a little doodling.’

She pulled it from his weak grasp and looked at the current page of data. ‘Some doodle, looks like you’re designing a starship.’

La Forge sighed. ‘I am, the Tucker-class is designed specifically for engineers, with additional labs and holographic facilities, as well as large shuttlebays for a wide assortment of auxiliary vessels.’

‘You’ve thought about this a lot.’

‘Well, I’ve served on a few ships which are too small to do their jobs properly. The Corps of Engineers are currently using Sabre-class ships which are small, manoeuvrable, and ideally suited to their job for the most part, but I wanted to design an engineer’s ship with plenty of room for improvisation, the engineer’s greatest weapon. The Tucker-class isn’t going to be much bigger, only three decks more, but those three decks should allow them more room to do what they do best.’

‘I never knew you were such a proponent for the Corps.’

‘I had the opportunity to meet Captain Scott, formerly of the Enterprise under Captain Kirk, and he taught me a thing or two about engineers and what makes them good.’

‘And?’

Geordi smiled. ‘Does there have to be an “and?”’

‘Not always.’

‘And not this time, I just tinker with this occasionally. I haven’t touched it in several months actually. I just thought of an amendment and thought I’d tinker a little more.’

‘I see,’ Uhnari replied and gestured for a waiter. ‘Well, I’m glad that you’re still here. Maybe we could take some leave together, I’m sure you’ve been saving up for a special occasion.’

La Forge looked into her eyes and smiled. Gone were the days when he felt that he needed to try to chat a woman up. Here he was with a woman that was already interested in him and he did have plenty of leave that he’d saved up, almost five months worth, and that was after the six months he’d taken when the Enterprise-D was destroyed.

‘I think I can manage that,’ he replied.

Red alert, all hands to battle stations,’ Lieutenant Battaglia’s voice said as the ship went into battle readiness. ‘All senior officers report to the bridge. Commander Uhnari, please report to the bridge.’

‘Break time’s over,’ La Forge said as he stood.

‘So it seems.’

They almost made it to the doors of the Happy Bottom Riding Club when there was a flash of light. La Forge turned to the window and saw a small shockwave coming toward the ship, from what had been Cold Station Twelve.

‘Everybody, hold on to something,’ he yelled as the shockwave washed over the ship.

And thus goes Cold Station Twelve--not to be confused with Ice Station Zebra :)

I'm enjoying this tale immensely--you've done an excellent job with the canon characters here, Xeris and in the process reminded us of why we enjoyed these characters as much as we did and do.

I've enjoyed reading the last few chapters as I catch up on this story. Great flow and excellent character interaction!

Thus ends Cold Station 12. Now, can the Enterprise catch up with the escaping augments and the embryos? Is this all a sinister Dominion plot? Will Geordi finally manage a stable relationship with a woman?

We await the answers to these and other questions.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

La Forge raised his head and noticed that everyone was on the floor, including Guinan, though she was already pulling herself up. Beside him, Uhnari was groggily getting to her feet and he did the same. They held on to each other and stumbled over to the nearest table. The chairs were all piled up against the bar, but the tables were bolted down. He shook his head to clear the cobwebs and then tapped his combadge. It gave a dull thud in response so he quickly moved behind the bar and tapped the comm panel which Guinan had had put in.

‘La Forge to bridge.’

Go ahead, Commander,’ Worf replied in his characteristic growl.

‘What happened?’

It appears to have been a self destruct system activated once the pathogens were released to prevent their spread,’ the Klingon first officer replied.

‘What damage do we have?’

Shields and weapons are out, long range communications are down, intraship is patchy and the warp engines are non-responsive.’

‘I’m on my way to engineering,’ the chief engineer replied quickly. ‘I’m sending Uhnari to you.’

Acknowledged,’ Worf replied, then added. ‘Captain Picard was injured in his chair. Please send an engineer to look at it.’

‘Aye sir,’ La Forge added. ‘Was it the restraints?’

Yes, they didn’t engage.’

‘Damn, La Forge out.’

‘I’ll see you later,’ Uhnari muttered, giving him a peck on the cheek as she left the Happy Bottom Riding Club.

He nodded and dashed out the other doors toward a turbolift for engineering. Within minutes he arrived to a scene that gave him a dangerous sense of déjà vu, back to when the previous Enterprise was suffering a coolant leak thanks to the Duras sisters. This ship, however, had more safeguards in place to prevent such an accident happening again. He instantly took command, taking over from Taurik.

‘Seal those leaks and lock down the antimatter constrictors. Check the core for microfractures and make sure the reactor chamber is secure. I’m going to check the intermix ratio. We need warp speed and we’re not getting it.’

‘Sir,’ Taurik appeared beside him. ‘The intermix ratio is fine and the core is free from microfractures. There is nothing physically wrong with the components of the warp core.’

‘Then why aren’t we moving, Taurik?’

‘There may be an external problem.’

‘Have you checked the nacelles and warp coils?’ La Forge asked.

‘No,’ the Vulcan replied and hurried off to do just that, calling three other engineers to join him.

‘Achen, get up to the bridge and find out why the restraints didn’t work.’

‘Yes sir,’ the young lieutenant replied and grabbed his toolkit.

Taurik to La Forge.’

‘What is it?’

There’s nothing wrong with the coils,’ the assistant chief engineer answered, ‘but the osmium alloy has turned to liquid. The computer must have initiated an automatic shutdown.’

La Forge tried to take in that information. ‘Take all the scans you can. I’m taking the warp drive offline.’

Aye sir.’

‘La Forge to bridge.’

Worf here.’

‘Worf, I have to take the warp engines offline. We’re going to be stuck here for a while. I’ve got my engineers repairing the shields, weapons and communications, but the warp nacelles are going to take a while.’

How long?’ the Klingon asked.

Geordi made some quick calculations. ‘Seventeen hours will give you warp six. If you want more than that I need at least a full day.’

Acknowledged, get started. Worf out.’

‘Everybody, listen up. All of you not working on shields, weapons and communications, I want you to go to the industrial replicators and start getting sheets of osmium alloy for the nacelles and taking up to Lieutenant Taurik. This is top priority people.’

As everyone rushed around to follow his orders, he realised that there was actually nothing more he could do down here, otherwise he would be in the way. There was no way to work on both nacelles at the same time because of the amount of work involved, so he made a decision to go to the bridge and keep an eye on everything from there. The plus side is that he would be close to Uhnari who looked like she needed the comfort.

When he got to the bridge, he quickly sought Worf out and gave him a brief rundown on the problem and its solution, as well as promising an extensive investigation. He glanced at the command chair and saw Lieutenant Achen pulling it apart to find the problem, then reach in and pulled a small twisted mass of metal from the back.

‘Commander?’ Achen held it up.

‘What is that?’

‘These are the metal components of the restraint system, sir,’ Achen answered as he scanned them. ‘The alloys have separated on a molecular level.’

‘Just like in the nacelles,’ La Forge mused. He turned to Worf. ‘We need to get out of this system. The shockwave released something that’s caused all this, and the further away we are from it, the better.’

Worf nodded and turned to the helm. ‘McGowan, get us out of here, full impulse.’

‘Aye sir.’

Worf tapped his combadge. ‘Lieutenant Elfiki, report to the bridge immediately.’

Acknowledged,’ Elfiki replied.

‘Technical science?’ La Forge asked.

‘If there’s something wrong out there, I want to know what it is,’ Worf replied. ‘Kadohata, Battaglia, I want scans of everything inside and outside the ship. Spatial anomalies, subspace tears, anything.’

‘Aye sir,’ the tactical and operations officers replied in near unison.

‘Worf, do you suspect something?’

‘Romulans,’ he muttered.

‘Do they have the technology?’

‘I always suspect Romulans.’

La Forge decided against countering his superior’s cultural mindset, but was also aware that Commander Sela and her cohorts were capable of anything. He suspected that she was just around to prevent the Enterprise catching the twisted scientist before she did.

‘I have something,’ Battaglia reported a moment later. ‘An asteroid less than one hundred million kilometres away from our current position is emitting some unusual radiation. It appears to have been activated by the destruction of the station.’

‘Any Romulan activity?’ Worf asked.

‘No cloaked vessels in the vicinity and no evidence there has been, sir,’ Battaglia answered.

Worf stared at the viewscreen as Battaglia brought up an image of the asteroid. ‘Get Madden to take an away team over. Tell him to be careful.’
