Avatar the Last Airbender Season 3 Discussion

I was amazed by the turn out at the NYC Comic Con of Avatar fans.

Nickleodeon representives stated Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the their top rated shows and their best selling DVD set. Way to go Avatar fans!!:techman:

I'm glad for TIVO. It's not a great move putting the series finale on a Sat. evening IMO.

I'm wondering (and hoping). Could we end up seeing a kind of 4th Season/Book, ala the Futurama DTV's? Two two-hour movies a year could be doable w/o huge expense to the studio. I doubt every last question and thread will be solved by the finale (Though this show's always exceeded my expectations)

The producers have said this series ends at three seasons, though there could be other series in the same universe. I think if they wanted to do a fourth season, Nickelodeon would certainly let them; there'd be no need to go the DVD-only route. (Although the episodes being aired this Monday through Wednesday already had their debuts on DVD a couple of months ago).

I'm surprised.

I expected more talk from Avatar fans here considering this is the end.

How many were surprised to see May and Bi Lee turn on Azula?

It's Mai and Ty Lee. And I think there was some Boiling Rock stuff discussed in another thread back in May when it first aired. It was an interesting twist, but not too surprising. Azula is just plain sadistic and evil, and while both Mai and Ty Lee are loyal, one is mostly bored and along for the ride and the other is anything but "evil". In the end, both followed their hearts.

Episode 16 (The Southern Raiders) is the first new one, and it aired last night. I'm going to watch it later and post something here later on.

Australian Nickelodeon has completely screwed with the airdates for the new eps, so we will have the finale sometime in the next month or so, but I'm living with the spoilers at the moment! About to burst with anticipation to how this all plays out! :)

These are the first time these are airing the States.

In the States, we're just finally seeing "The Southern Air Temple" and the 3 or 4 that followed. They were actually released the DVD's of the episodes here before they even aired them on TV.

So the finale has come and gone and after a second watching I thought it was pretty perfect although I thought the Lion Turtle came a bit out of left field.

My favourite part was the White Lotus gang taking back Ba Sing Se and Iroh burning the Fire Nation flag.

Would have like to have see the Earth King at Zuko's coronation but I guess there wasn't time for that.

Aang : Hey, where's the Earth King?

Zuko : We had people looking all over, but we just couldn't find him.

Mai : If we're lucky, he and the Bear ate each other.

A Wiki post mentioned the possibility of a new series based on a different incarnation of the Avatar, but I see at least a few TV-Movie-ish stories based on what's left over from what I agree was a very nearly perfect finale.

1 - Ursa's fate. I doubt Zuko will get a straight answer from his whiny father, but with the power now at his command, I can't see him not using it to find out.

2 - Was it me, or, even with Ty Lee, did there seem to be five Kyoshi warriors? I don't think Mai was joining up.

3 - How difficult is what Aang did to Ozai? Because if its not dangerous to him, he should at least try and seal off Azula's power. In Azula's case, I'm guessing Zuko appointed Li and Lo to watch over her while still under guard. Even if powerless, if she retained her ability to inspire troops, leading a revolt among FN troops still hungry for conquest is a concern. Then again, it seemed to me that a lot of her prodigious skills were built upon a house of cards, ego-wise. All it took was Mai and Ty Lee's simple defiance coupled with her father's exclusion from the invasion, and *maybe* Zuko being able to hold his own against her recently, and she began to unhinge. No one had ever told her no and meant it whom she no ability to coerce.

4 - His efforts in the present aside, I wonder how quickly Iroh was accepted into Ba Sing Se? His name was still notorious there.

5 - How many other Southern Tribe Water Benders (other than the Witch) and did any other Airbenders survive in hiding?

6 - Finally, some events that surprised me by not happening : No healing for Zuko's face, no lightning-bending for Zuko or Aang, no blood-bending for Kitara after 'The Southern Raiders', and the Avatar state being restored without Aang detaching from direct worry about his friends (I don't mean not caring--just trusting that they could take care of themselves).

2 - Was it me, or, even with Ty Lee, did there seem to be five Kyoshi warriors? I don't think Mai was joining up.

Actually including Ty Lee there were 6 Kyoshi warriors, I guess the others could have come to the palace to join up with their leader.

Well watching that scene again it's clearly shown that Ozai's spirit came very close to overwhelming Aang so I don't think that he would have been trying that again anytime soon.

I bet Zuko had Azula locked away deep underground where she can influence no-one.

5 - How many other Southern Tribe Water Benders (other than the Witch) and did any other Airbenders survive in hiding?

From interviews in the past the creators of the show have clearly stated that Aang is the last airbender hence why the show is called "the last airbender", as for the SWT I think that Katara is the last bender there but what with the renewed contact with the NWT I'm sure they'd be some new benders being born as the SWT gets bigger.

So henceforth only the Avatar will have power over air, unless an airbender emerges somehow from one of the other nations, which is prolly rare if ever.

Azula's threesome battled a group of six Kyoshi Warriors in "Appa's Lost Days," and as we later saw, the Warriors were defeated and imprisoned. Thus, assuming they all survived, then after Suki's liberation there would've been five remaining Kyoshi Warriors in prison. So at the end, there should've been a total of seven including Suky and Ty Lee.

References to lion-turtles have been seeded throughout the series, including a shot in "The Library" of a scroll depicting an Avatar (Roku?) confronted by one with two others in the background. Also, it's been suggested that the statue Aang collides with in the main titles represents the head of a lion-turtle.

Aang is the last airbender, but if he has the power to use "energy-bending" to take someone's firebending ability away, he may also be able to use it to imbue people with airbending ability.

There's nothing preventing Ang from having kids. ;)

Give it four generations and you might have several little airbenders to chose from for the next airbending Avatar.

That and the fact that an entire episode was dedicated to Ang's journey on the "island" and his meeting with the ancient lion-turtle got the writers off the hook for a deus ex machina (which a few people have claimed this ending wa on other boards I've read this week). It really wasn't. I figured Ang would probably find a way to stop the Fire Lord without killing him, but I really didn't know how. But it wasn't cheap or manufactured, it was obviously set up to be that way if you look back.

Oh, and I thought Nick in the US got the episodes before everyone or at the same time as everyone else (besides YTV up here which has broadcast a few episodes early). Isn't it a Nick show? Or did they just fuck up the final week?

It was never really made clear whether bending ability was hereditary or not, though. Katara could waterbend but Sokka couldn't. And I believe there was one instance of a pair of identical twins with one bender and one non-bender.

Also, what bending ability would the child of an airbender and a waterbender end up with if it were hereditary?

Not quite sure what you mean by this. Nickelodeon chose to schedule the last ten episodes in a single week because they wanted to make an "event" out of it, perhaps to boost interest in the final DVD release. This meant that a few episodes debuted on DVD first, but for whatever reason, they made the choice to let that happen.

Aren't the Airbenders all monks and also all men?

So they had to be having intercourse with other women from other tribes all this time anyway. Katara & Sokka, Toph & Zuko all have parents, we've seen Ang's teachers and mentors but never any mention of who or what his parents are.

Did you see the finale? One of the past Avatars Aang communed with was Avatar Yang Chen, a female Air Nomad Avatar. And those airbender children we saw in flashbacks had to come from somewhere.

The Female airbenders lived in the eastern and western air temples and the men lived in the northern and southern airtemples so i think its a miracle any hanky panky went on at all.

True.

Try brushing up on what the word "nomad" means. ;) They didn't live permanently in any of the temples, but migrated seasonally among all four of them.

We all know what a "nomad" is. He/she was just making a humorous observation.;)
