4th wall Tostadas

The Fourth Wall, or fourth window, is that so called realm we live in. Sometimes a movie (THE LAST ACTION HERO) or a Tv show (Moonlighting-Boston Legal) will actually have a character talk to the audience as if they know they are being watched by an audience. Even Mr. Roper on THREES COMPANY did it when he would put down his wife, then turn to the screen and laugh as if he knew we were laughing with him..

Can you think of a time where Star Trek did something that was intended to penetrate that Fourth Wall?? Something that was aimed at the audience?

Indirectly there was a wink to the audience in Ship in a Bottle when Picard wonders if they are living their lives out is someone's box on a table somewhere and when Barclay says end program and then the credits start to roll.

Yes, I do remember that one as well. One of my favorite TNG episodes. I came up with the part in TREK V when they show the WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE inscription on the old style conning wheel in the recreation room..

DS9, Family Business (I think): In Quark's house. Quark and Moogie are arguing, and Rom breaks in:

QUARK
It doesn't matter if it's one slip
or a hundred thousand bars, females
are not allowed to earn profit.

ISHKA
Why not?

QUARK
Because it's the law. And without
law, society would descend into chaos.

ISHKA
If you ask me, our society could use
a little chaos...

QUARK
Not if I have anything to say about
it.

Quark glowers at Ishka, who glares at Quark.

ROM
Gee, I wish Father were alive.

They both look at him like he's crazy.

ROM
Then it'd be just like old times...
sitting around the family table,
eating tube grubs, discussing
important issues of the day.

Quark and Ishka turn to each other and then the camera in a direct 4th wall breakdown (and they go just a little past).

Cracked me up!

I will look for that tonight. I can't remember the scene, but will be cool to see it. Thanks for the tip!

What about the quick wave Tash Yar gives from the Cargo Bay in the episode Symbiosis, wouldn't that be an example of a character breaking the 4th wall as it basically was Yar/Crosby waving goodbye to her friends and fans?

Yes..that would count..

What about Cochrain's "Are you on some kind of Star Trek?" line from First Contact?

I was thinking of the snarky "you'd LOVE to make love to yourself" line when Kirk is wrestling the shape-shifter in TUC.

pregnant Kira tells Bashir 'it's your fault I'm like this' in one DS9 ep, and of course it was Siddig who got Visitor pregnant IRL...

There's the Voyager episode (can't remember the title) where Q shows up and zaps Voyager all around the cosmos-- near the end of Q's joyride, Voyager ends up as a Christmas tree ornament, a la Hallmark

I thouht McCoy's line to Spock in The Voyage Home: "You really have gone where no man has gone before!" was one, as I don't think Kirk's opening credits speech is really supposed to be something Kirk ever said...is it?

But if that steering wheel they showed in TREK V has been there all along, just never shown to us, maybe they are all referenceing it..

i saw tostadas and thought this was a new item from taco bell's "4th meal" thing that had some relevance to trek like a promotion. >_< i was all, "ooh i want to try it." alas, there are no tostadas.... :(

In the Beginning of "In the Pale Moonlight" Sisko looks directly into the camera as he begins to record his log entry explaining his actions.

DS9 "Rules of Engagement"

As characters testify at Worf's trial, they are shown 'acting out' their testimony, speaking directly into the camera
