Facets: Curzon's feelings for Jadzia

ninetofive

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I really didn't get this bit. I thought the whole point of the symbiont was getting the previous host's memories. Yet we are shown that Jadzia is completely ignorant of Curzon's affection for her. She finds out only after 'speaking' to him.

Yes it doesn't work does it? Unless of course the symbiont was hiding Curzon's memories from Jadzia. Jadzia only gets a general feeling about why Curzon dropped her then allowed her to join. Then once Joran does the whole "You're not worthy to be Dax thing" Jadzia questions "Curzon" again but the symbiont isn't around to protect Curzon.

That must be weird. Was she suddenly in love with herself? Maybe that's why she always came off as wee bit arrogant.

I thought the whole point of Facets was that the memories of a former host were removed, so until Curzon left Odo, Jadzia did not have any of Curzon's memories?

Yes but she had them before Curzon was removed so should have known before.

If there was a way for them to hide the memory of an entire host for at least some time (Joran), then I don't find it hard to believe that there wouldn't be a way for certain memories to be repressed.

Maybe he didn't have to. It could be an area that Curzon had the symbiont repress. If real people with their singular lifetime can have repressed memories, especially painful ones, then surely it's not unreasonable that after seven or eight different lifetimes, there are some repressed memories floating around in there?

Perhaps Jadzia was aware of and had reconciled with those memories—until Curzon was compartmentalized and placed in Odo. Since host and symbiont are described as working together like two computers, perhaps Jadzia is denied access to the symbiont's 'hard drive' for the duration of this ritual. There's little to be gained, after all, from meeting your symbiont's antecedent hosts if no surprises are in store.

My own take was that the memories of previous host are static. With them in a body new thoughts are created (see Dax having knowledge of shapeshifting and Curzon getting Tobin drunk).

So it's easier to query a new "person" rather than wade through eight lifetimes of meories. Plus we also saw that Jadzia picked up traits from previous hosts and she wasn't aware of it.

Of course it's also possible that the memories are memories. Maybe Trill's don't have total recall of their past hosts? That only when something triggers a memory can they find it?

Of course Field of Fire would throw up more complicated ideas.
