AICN reports on Actual Trek XI Footage

I was just looking at the talkback, which is pretty interesting, mainly this;

There wasn't anything that felt wrong in the least, but it was strange... cuz it all looked big. The Enterprise looks huge, both on the outside and on the inside. Not spacey, but it felt like if you had to walk the length of the enterprise you'd hope there were a couple of bench spots to rest.

Think we might be getting the 2000-ft long version after all?

Sure.

It's scary when he compares JJ to Robert Wise.
Wise had a script that was being written as it was being filmed, and the production was otherwise plagued by a tight schedule. Certainly not a problem here. I think he was just referring to the scale of the film. He obviously couldn't be talking about the leaden pacing.

Plus there's nothing in TMP that could be compared to the troop deployment scene described in the report.

...And did I read this article correct? Did they say the entire TOS cast is going to be on the Enterprsie bridge with Pike in command? There's a continuity can of worms.

I don't remember anything in the show or movies that went into any detail whatsoever about when the crewmen were assigned to the ship. What we saw in The Cage could've taken place long before the time period in the film. Perhaps Pike was in command when the bulk of TOS's characters were assigned to the ship and Kirk replaced him later. It's way too early to claim continuity problems.

Here's what I read:

It all ended with characters arriving on the bridge, under the command of Captain Pike. Sulu was at the helm – and the bridge. And the uniforms… Classic Trek. Nice.
Characters. Presumably some of them. Including Sulu. And uniforms. Nothing about it being the entire cast.

Stand down from Red Alert. ;)

Never heard of it. Please elaborate.
It was a movie era appearance design called Akula created for a game.

Essentially, a saucer with one nacelle above and one nacelle below; both on centerline. This sounds exactly like the description given in the article.

I believe Vance has a schematic of it somewhere.

The Akula looked something like this:

But I'm betting the Kelvin looks something more like this:

Lovin' me that Anhui. Nice and mean.

I like the idea of it depicting things on a far grander scale than anything we've seen in Trek before, with perhaps the exception of TMP - it gives me the sense that they're striving to give us something truly cinematic in scope, rather than the barely improved TV level production values most of the movies exhibited.

I'm glad that Paramount have finally realised that giving Star Trek B-movie budgets has always been a limiting factor in the revenue the franchise has been able to generate in comparison with its peers. The writing in Insurrection and Nemesis might not have been brilliant, but it wasn't any worse than the writing in a lot of far more successful, bigger budget pictures (Star Wars prequels, anyone?). The real limiting factor of Star Trek's recent movies (to my mind, at least) has been the lack of any real scope in the way the story has been realised on the screen. Sure, they've had some nice effects here and there, but never in any jaw dropping quantity. You can get away with that sort of thing on TV, but not in the movie business, where the "wow factor" is a necessity in order to generate repeat business and word of mouth.

Sounds like Star Trek might just have the wow factor!

I think in "The Menagerie" Kirk said he first met Pike when he accepted command of the Enterprise, implying that he not actually served under Pike on the Enterprise prior to his promotion. If the movie changes this, no doubt that'll upset some of the fans, but I doubt the vast majority of people who see this movie would even know that obscure reference or care about it in the first place.

Paramount has to find some way to get some of this early footage attached to some film by this fall. this seems like enough to get folks excited but not give much away.

I understand how June '08 is too early to show footage from a May '09 film, but Nov '08 seems perfect for the first footage release.

Of course I'd be happy to have seen that footage yesterday.

Well, I can now replace my optimism toward this movie with an absolute, cheshire-like, 'I told you so' grin!!!
All along I and some others have carried a hopeful, positive attitude for Star Trek XI.
Someone pass me a sombrero to hide my excited erection!:klingon::drool:

"Hi everyone! Please don't mind me, I am just looking for a group of people called the Naysayers. Huh? They are nowhere to be seen? Hmm, okay, thanks! I'll look elsewhere."

Apparently you'll find the Naysayers responding to the original article on the AICN website. :p

Naysayers? Okay, I'll give it a shot:

your gay movie sukx the balls lol./ i didn not watch it so climb back into bed wit tom CRUISE A!

Tom cruise is like a fag and will only hurt trek so all the critics hate this movie you no it.

At the very least? It seems VERY encouraging for us "oldtimers" who expect a certain amount of reverence to the source material. Sure, freshen it up...but don't throw out the baby with the bathwater!

Because I needed one more cliche. :D

I don't care if the Enterprise ends up being bigger than it was in TOS. I don't care if Sulu is at the helm during Pike's command. I find it surprising that McCoy and Kirk were friends at the academy, but there's a logic here that I like: Kirk didn't have McCoy as his chief surgeon during "Where No Man Has Gone Before" but he did have Gary Mitchell as his XO. When Gary died, he needed a friend aboard to take his place and pulled strings to get McCoy transferred. Spock, naturally gets a promotion. Even though there's no sign of Mitchell in this movie, I'm sure he can still fit in historically; before or after the events shown.

All I've gotta say is it looks like JJ is working very hard on my birthday present and I dare say it's going to be the best one I'll ever get!

Hey, it'll be my birthday present too! Don't go thinking J.J. likes YOU better! ;)
