GET SMART - Discussion and SPOILERS

Arkin has always been a talent, but it seems his later years have been even more brilliant. Good news, to be sure.

Serpentine, Shelly...SERPENTINE!

On a side note, I also found it fun to note that all three of the cars he drove in the original series were seen on the screen in the movie (Sunbeam Alpine, Karmann-Ghia, and an Opel)
Sweet! Little homages like that are a perfect way to recognize what came before.

I haven't seen the film yet, but from what I've heard they took the right approach. They didn't try to completely reproduce the Don Adams series, but they took the right attitude, an inspiration from the series. Those who ahev seen the film, would you say that is accurate? It at least seems that way to me.

Anyone else besides me think that Alan Arkin as "The Chief" FINALLY is up to the level of humorous quality Edward Platt brought to the role?

You won't be disappointed. Arkin delivers a line that got THE biggest laugh from the crowd.

Agreed. Also loved the cameos from original cast members. (See if you can spot them - one is obvious, one not)

Arkin is hilarious throughout the movie.

AWESOME!!!

Yes. It's obvious everyone involved has great affection for the original series. That's another reason I liked it.

I rewatched the original pilot (the aired one, not the other one) last night in anticipation of this film. I was pleasantly surprised that so MUCH of what the series did was already in place from the beginning.

As such, I am hereby lowering The Cone of Silence on further discussion of this topic until Friday. ;)

I was a huge fan of the re-runs of the series when I was a kid and have been looking forward to seeing the movie after watching the first teaser trailer! Hathaway and Carrell seem like they have tons of chemistry with each other...I wonder how Kristen Kruek would have done as Agent 99 had she got the part? There were reports on the net during casting that she auditioned for the part but ultimately lost out to Anne Hathaway. I am seeing "Get Smart" tomorrow...

One interview I read said that when Anne auditioned then left the room the feeling in the room was...the others can go home now.

I loved the idea of this cast from the get go and can't wait to see it...may have to $ wise, but will get there as soon as pay day hits.

Uh, WHAT unaired pilot? Are you referring to the 1965 black and white episode? If so, I thought that had aired back then. Or is there another one I don't know about?

Wasn't there an "unaired" version that was longer and the editing was a bit different? Maybe I'm thinking of another show (like The Dick Van Dyke Show, which was originally callled Head of the Family).

I saw the movie. If there were a grading option, I'd give it an 'average'. It wasn't anything special and didn't have the charm that the 60s series had, but it was watchable. It was what it was, an updated big-screen remake of an old favorite.

Now for my points...

- Steve Carell was the obvious choice for Maxwell Smart and he did very well in the role. Unlike in the promos from a while back, he didn't come off as unsure of himself. He was just as confident and bumbling as Don Adams was. Did they make changes between those promos and the release?

- Alan Arkin was another great choice. He was a worthy successor to Edward Platt and played a great Chief.

- Anne Hathaway was seriously hot in this movie as a tough-as-nails Agent 99. I will say though that I would have preferred an older actress in the part. She wasn’t the best match for Steve Carell.

- What else did I like about Anne Hathaway’s 99? I loved all her outfits, including the wig that was gave her that Barbara Feldon look, and I especially loved the fashionable 60s overcoats they gave her. I can’t say enough about these things. She was probably the best part of the movie despite my reservations about her casting.

- The movie had a lot of funny gags that had me laughing. Good work there.

- I liked all the little touches from the TV series. What was especially impressive was how naturally the “Oh Max!” lines were integrated into the mix. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the “Missed it by that much!” lines. Those didn’t work at all.

- Max taking the car that was on display was an interesting moment. Why was the car and the suit there? Did Don Adams’ Cold War Agent 86 exist in this world? I did think about it, but it doesn’t seem likely. For now I’ll just accept it as another homage to the series that I’m not supposed to think too deeply about. Funny having the infamous car run out of gas too.

- Two scenes looked like they were lifted from other movies... The skydiving sequence from Moonraker and the break-in-through-the-floor sequence from Entrapment. Were there any more?

- The moment the Tick showed up, I knew it was supposed to be Hymie. Guess they're setting him up for a sequel if there is one. Will there be one? I'm not sure. Right now it wouldn't surprise me if there isn't. I can't wait to see how well it does this weekend.

I love this movie poster... It's very reminiscent of The 40 year Old Virgin.

WHAT?!

(Sorry...had to do it. Couldn't help myself. )

And I have seen the film. Good as a spy spoof in it's own right. Even better for those Get Smart fans familiar with the series.

I'll just say that the more you know the series, the better!

Yep. You're right about Head of the Family, which featured a completely different cast from the Dick Van Dyke show. But I don't know about Get Smart having an unaired pilot. Like I said, the pilot was in black and white, but that was included in the syndication package and is on the first season DVD set. It's a regular episode, usual length, just not in color.

I just got back from seeing it with my 11 year old. She hasn't seen the original series, but she loves a good comedy. We both laughed out loud throughout the film, hard enough to hurt, even at the gags we saw in the trailer.

The entire cast was great. The movie captured a lovely nuance, the fact that it was slapstick comedy and satire, but at the same time just a hint of action/adventure. Both aspects worked nicely.

There were so many "easter eggs" from the original I lost count, I loved them, but my daughter didn't need to understand them to laugh and laugh.

Steve Carell managed to capture Don Adams without trying, or looking like he was trying or doing an impression. It was a great tribute performance. He's hilarious, and he also understands why Don was hilarious.

My daughter is actually begging me to see it again in the morning, we'll maybe negotiate her cleaning up her room or something.

I just got back from seeing it. I thought it was an entertaining movie and they did a good job of trying to be faithful to the series. Someone in this thread mentioned the "missed it by that much gags" didn't really work, and I'd have to agree with that. But overall it was funny.

I'm not really a Steve Carell fan and Don Adams is a very hard act to follow but I felt like he probably did as good of job as anybody could have trying to follows Adams' footsteps.

Would have liked to have seen more cameos from members from the original TV show (maybe I missed them but I only saw one that I recogonized.) Of course I guess a lot of that cast is probably gone now.

Good film overall, solid B+.

It's the line that is set up with "Chief are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

I loved that line! Had me giggling for at least five minutes, I wish I could have rewound the movie and watched that part again.

On a side note, I also found it fun to note that all three of the cars he drove in the original series were seen on the screen in the movie (Sunbeam Alpine, Karmann-Ghia, and an Opel)

I much rather would have preferred that Max and 99 drive a Mazda Miata, 2007 Opel GT, and/or a new Dodge Charger instead; new movie, new versions of characters, new cars, too! After all, Don Adams didn't keep the same car season after season on the original series, and neither should Steve Carrell have to have the same cars as Don Adams simply because its 'tradition' (in fact, in the reunion movie, Adams drives a 1989 Alfa Romeo in its opening scenes.)

All that aside, I'll be seeing the new movie next week; I've been waiting for this movie for a long time, and I'd rather see Carell in this than see him in that piece of shit The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

this was the funniest movie I've seen all year!

I laughed so much It's hard to pick the funniest moment, though I will say I was totally caught off guard by "Would you believe Chuck Norris with a BB gun?" and the swordfish line

I'M SO HAPPY! I'M SO HAPPY! THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIIIIIIIIIIIIIFE!

this will be one to watch again and again :D

Would you believe...I did not go yesterday?

Weather here was rather stormy and I didn't care to venture out. Today is nice and it's in the plans. Looking forward to it. Based on posts (I momentarily raised the Cone of Silence), it looks like a hot new franchise. Good for Carell!
