The new 3G iPhone announced

Twilight

Vice Admiral
Admiral
just now, at WWDC 08.

Looks fantastic. HUGE decrease in price ($199 !), new form factor, dramatically faster on a 3G network (as opposed to iPhone 1's 2G AT&T EDGE service), built in GPS with real time tracking accurate up to a few meters!! (my favorite new feature).

The list goes on...

many details about Jobs' keynote here:

Other services announced: shitloads of new iPhone 3rd party apps with the new SDK - available through iTunes for about 10 dollars. Some of the new apps look great.

A cloud-based service called Mobile Me which replaces the old .Mac service. Dramatically improved.

I am almost impatient. Also afraid the price will inflate when crossing the ocean. I'm expecting to see the 8GB model climbing up to 299€. Unfortunately.

Nope, the prices for the 8GB 3G iPhone are hard locked at $199USD, in every country.

So at today's exchange rate you'd pay 126 euros for the 8GB.

The specific quote that confirms this:

"The price is a maximum of $199 all around the world -- we're really, really excited about the new iPhone 3G. And as you might expect, we have a new ad! I'd love to show it to you."

That quote will be technically confirmed and elaborated upon when Apple releases the price points on its website later today, I believe.. .

And I think Belgium is one of the 22 countries that will get it on July 11th (don't take my word on that, I don't know for sure)

So wait, the iPhone is $100 cheaper than it's iTouch cousin with the same amount of space?

 right now, yes. I think the iPod touch will go down somewhat because it's a pretty glaring difference - you're paying WAY more for a device with FAR less functionality.

However, don't forget that the iPhone requires a super expensive phone plan, while the touch does not. There's clearly some subsidization going on between carriers and apple with regards to the phone's price.

I wonder if I could use the phone without getting a plan? The GPS feature sounds sick.

You'd have to jailbreak it, but yes, it's probably doable... once they figure out how to break into the new firmware, anyway.

I wouldn't expect them to do anything with the Touch until September, which would be the year anniversary of when it first came out. Part of the problem is they'd rather sell you an iPhone then an iPod Touch, so they can't make the Touch too attractive... ;)

There's been a software level jailbreak for the latest iPhone firmwares for a while now (not sure if that's true for the latest - before today - firmware though)

Previously it's been super easy to jailbreak a phone. Not legal, but easy.

iPhone 3G may be a tad harder given that Apple / ATT will adapt to the previous jailbreaks, but it'll be done.

Unfortunately.... all 3G iPhones will need to be activated in store in an attempt to stop people from jailbreaking phones. As it is now, you can buy an iPhone from an Apple store and activate it (or not) yourself at home but if that's no longer the case it'll be harder to get a phone without singing up for an AT&T plan. It also means that the lines at Apple stores will slow to a crawl...

Good on Apple for pursuing a mass market price with the $199 offering...quite un-Applelike. But that's enough to get me even more interested in the iPhone. Too bad they upped the cheapest voice and data package, though.

I hope the new low price doesn't come with any unintended consequences like cheap, easily-broken hardware.

it's doubtful that apple will want to cheapen it's quality they do have a reputation to uphold.

that said I am laughing my socks off at all the early-adopters paying over $500 for the 1st gen iphone.
It just makes it more apparent that apple is yet another cult of mass media like Oprah, Obama and team sports.

Not really... you have that sort of early adopter with pretty much every technology product.

I still don't see what all the fuss is about. There are phones out there that do everything this does, and more, usually free with a contract. It might look sleeker, but that's about all.
I might have one, if it were free, but I couldn't see myself paying $199 for one.

What other phones have built in GPS?
