1001001 Presents: Pneumonia Theater

Good morning sports fans,

Well your old pal 1001001 has fallen on some tough times. More specifically, I have pneumonia. I was diagnosed Thursday morning after what I thought was a simple (if not long lasting) chest cold.

So now I'm on several medications and bed rest. I'm on medical leave from work until at least Tuesday.

In order to pass the time, I went over to Blockbuster on my way home from the pharmacy. I haven't been to the movies in about 3 years. I don't know why, I just haven't. The upside of this is once in a while I can go to the video store and there's tons of stuff I haven't seen.

Here's our Pneumonia Theater Line-Up:
Semi-Pro
National Treasure 2
Dan in Real Life
Charlie Wilson's War
There Will Be Blood
No Country for Old Men
The Company (Mini-Series)

There will be spoilers for these movies ahead, so consider yourself warned!!!!

Here's what I've watched so far...

So I started with the light and easy stuff first. National Treasure 2 was something fun to look at without having to think too hard. And it worked on that level. Of course the whole thing is ridiculous, but it was an enjoyable bit of fluff that didn't tax my already beaten down system. I'd give a B as a popcorn movie, C as a real movie.

Yesterday morning I watched Semi-Pro. I'm one of those people who just think Will Ferrell is funny. He cracks me so consistently....up. Anway, this movie had its moments but seemed to take it's foot off the gas too often. The whole "Love Me Sexy" thing was great though. That song is totally stuck in my head. The basketball stuff was okay, nothing new or interesting there. What was Woody Harrelson doing? It was like he was sleepwalking through a part he was completely miscast in. JMHO. In any event, it was pleasant enough with a couple of good belly laughs. I give it a B-.

Last night I watched Dan in Real Life. I also find Steve Carell pretty funny. This movie was kind of mis-promoted, at least from what I remember. I recall the single-dad/teenage daughter angle being played up for laughs. This movie is really not a comedy. It is sweet and has its moments of humor ("YOU ARE A MURDERER OF LOVE!!!"). It's really more about a widower with 3 daughters who finally meets someone only to find out she's his brother's new girlfriend. Hilarity do NOT ensue. It is a touching film but not what I expected. I also give this movie a B-.

And before I went to bed, I checked out Charlie Wilson's War. Now this movie I liked a lot. Philip Seymour Hoffman is a fine actor, with one hell of a range. I thought Hanks did a good job in a role I would not have picked him for. He had the right amount of scoundrel in him without being a caricature of a southern politician. And it actually brought up some things that I hadn't thought about before. I wish it was a little bit longer so the aftermath could have been explored further than just his ending quote. As for Julia Roberts as a born again fundie? Hmmm... Anyway, I give this film a A-. The best one I've watched so far.

I think today will be The Company miniseries. Saving what I expect to be the best for last...There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men.

So those are your film reviews so far from the sick bed. Please feel free to share your thoughts about these films, and of course, please no spoilers about the ones I haven't seen yet.

Thanks.

Your pal,
1001001

The only one I've seen is Dan in Real Life. Good movie. I hope you feel better soon. Pneumonia is the pits. I've had it about 30 times (from 5 years old to 16).

I had higher hopes for Semi Pro too. It almost felt like they were trying to go Major League with this movie and some Will Ferrel silliness added in. With the Woody Harrelson character, it seemed like they were doing a new variation on the Tom Berenger character from Major League. I did think it was funny that he was traded to the Tropics for a Washing Machine. David Koechner needs more leading roles.

Get better soon, 1001001. Maybe you need a rally monkey.

Thanks. Rally Monkey is busy keeping the Angels in first place.

:)

That sounds pretty accurate.
