How Much Longer?

When do you think we are going to get some real news or information on this movie. The last time we got anything that wasn't just the usual PR stuff from actors/director/producers was the teaser trailer. The fall? September, December, February, April? Seeing from his recent comments, will J.J. try to keep Star Trek as secretive as Cloverfield?

I would hope they release some information by the fall, or my interest will hit rock bottom and stay there. If they try to keep it as secret as Cloverfield, I don't see myself as being intrigued enough to go check it out without knowing more.

Back in the "Olden Days" (before the interwebs) we knew next to nothing about a film until we saw it. In the case with all of the TOS films, we may have read about the fact that they were making a film in Starlog, and if we were lucky, we would see a trailer at the movie theater -- but that was about it. I remember sitting in the theater for TWoK and being (pleasantly) surprised that it was about the same "Khan" from Space Seed (yeah -- I know -- I was a bit slow to put 2+2 together, but the payoff was worth having so little prior knowledge about the film.)

Usually the first concrete information we got for a TOS film's story was when we saw the ads on TV for it about the same time it opened in the theater.

So I won't lose interest enough to not want to see it. My interest may wane a bit throughout the summer, but it will pick up again in the winter and Spring. By May, I'll be eager to see it, even if I don't get a boatload of information from online sources.

Well, it isn't like I want to know every little detail about the movie, I was just wondering when you think we'll get some concrete information other than they recast the crew of the TOS. Will the theatrical trailer for the movie be similar to Cloverfield in that it is so vague, you're still not sure what the movie is about?

Oh, and in my opinion a lot of older previews gave away everything and were so long it was basically a synopsis of the movie (by older I mean before the 80's). I remember watching the preview for Cool Hand Luke on the VHS before the movie and thinking, is this the movie? I don't remember it starting with the voice over of "What we've got here is ... failure to communicate." over and over and over. And then it finally ended and the movie came on.

I think we'll get some actual footage from the film. Maybe a trailer or a second teaser trailer that's more revealing than the first one. Maybe a picture or pictures of the cast.

I shall remain erect with anticipation for up to four hours. Beyond that I shall seek medical attention.

We've seen the Enterprise. Next up should be another teaser featuring the cast doing the requisite, slow-mo "The Right Stuff" strut toward the camera. With a mysterious, Star Trek twist, of course. (They're all backlit until a transporter effect illuminates them long enough to see familiar uniform details just before they vanish.)

I know where you're coming from. It was kind of nice to not have any way of knowing what was going to happen and what you were going to see until trailer/commercial time.

Though I do really want to see Kirk and Spock (Pine and Quinto) posing in costume....I think I'd take just that and be happy till opening day!

I suspect this movie will be successful but believe that the degree of success will depend a lot on the amount of marketing that is done to promote it. From my perspective, Trek films have never been marketed well. Commercials were sparse and trailers even worse. JJA needs to perform a media blitz for STXI. I would love to see a few more teasers this summer into the fall with all out trailers by the holiday season. I understand the concept of keeping a tight lid on the film and building anticipation. That may be the right movie for us fans but if he wants this film to be accessible to a broader audience, he should rethink that. So many bestselling novels were turned into blockbuster movies; this tells me that the audience can know almost everything about a movie beforehand and that will only bring them in. I don't want to know everything about this film but if only for the sake of making this a more "general audience friendly" film, more needs to be released in the form of photos, teasers, trailers, and clips. He's a smart guy and I have faith he's doing the right thing for the franchise, which I hope includes this type of marketing. He has time so we'll see.

I'd LOVE a new trailer this summer, but I have a feeling that would be considered too soon. Hopefully they'll attach a new trailer for some big movie coming out in the fall.

Very much doubt we would see anything with the 'Love Guru' June 20 '08

I was surprised Paramount doesn't have anything sci-fi or action or remotely big all this year till.... well till Star Trek in may '09 !!

Paramount's holiday 2008 and early 2009 stuff is almost non-existant. They have nothing but comedies and kids movies coming. I don't know what they might attach it to.

I mean they can't wait for February 13, 2009 Friday the 13 re-make, can they???

Starlog actually had a "Star Trek Movie Report" as a regular feature while the first movie was in production. These monthly reports were written by Roddenberry secretary Susan Sackett.

In any case, JJ's not making this film for you. He's making it for people who enjoy a great new movie, and trust the director to bring them something worthwhile.

I may just be old and missing the point, but this sort of thing strikes me the same way as the idea refusing to buy the DVD of a classic movie because there aren't enough extras or expressing a complete lack of interest because it's in (Horrors!) Black and White.

Somewhere along the way, in amongst the blur of multiple trailers, live online chat sessions, "leaked" material, podcasts, "making of" documentaries, director / producer / lead actors / best boy / caterer commentary tracks and collecting the entire fugging 20-piece set of promotional glasses at McDonald's or Burger King, the importance of actually seeing the movie itself -- for what it is and the way it was intended to be viewed -- seems to have gotten lost. And that just baffles me.

Have the trappings really become more important than the movie? Is it no longer possible to watch something completely cold, starting at the beginning instead of the end, not knowing at every turn what's going to happen next?

I hope so too! I got my four-day pass so as to not miss any presentation Abrams & Co. (sounds like a 70s sitcom) may make at Con. I'd like it if they'd do a presentation similar to what Singer gave for SR the year before the movie premiered. Singer showed a five-minute edited selection of clips, like a really long trailer.

Or the right of a studio ever re-releasing a film with additional bonus features - 'cos that's double-dipping and if they intended to do this we should have been warned years ago when we could have stopped ourselves from buying that first version.
