Why? The breasts

Sirtis and Ryan were cast for their rolls because..

  • They had big breasts...the fact they could act was secondary

  • How dare you!!! they were serious actresses who just happened to have big breasts

Ryan I agree with so I voted the first option but I disagree about Sirtis

Oh, I totally agree. But,I didn't want to offend our TNG friends. Ryan I think proved her self to be a good actress. But I think she was casted for her assets first. The fact she could act was just all gravy from there on.

But...oh my...what a pair of assets!!! Why did they even have to BORGAFY them, I don't know.

I liked both of them very much. Regardless of their "assets" i thought that they were very good actors.

^ I agree. Many factors affect the choice of actors/actresses. But all that underpinning Ryan had makes me wonder what became more important to the producers once she was hired.

I'd guess both. But past Trek has tended to look like a space travel version of the "Stepford Wives" at times.

It would be nice to include more regulars who display other "strengths". It would make things more realistic and believable.

And I'm sure both Ryan and Sirtis would be happier getting their hands dirty than being prettied up and glamourised all the time: That gets tiresome real fast. As actors, they must get fed up with always having to suck their stomachs in or have corsets do it for them! Once in awhile is fine but beyond that, mind-boggling boredom.

Actresses -- and actors -- are very well aware of their physical attributes. They use them, manipulate them, to elicit emotion. That's part of the job. They know very well when they're expected to play "sexy."

Hopefully they bring much more to a part. But performers do not ever ignore their bodies. Bodies are the only tools they have to portray character.

I would think that with all the obsene amounts of money at risk if the wrong person is cast, or the show doesn't work for some reason, tptb would be more responsible to find someone who can act, rather than just hire a couple of "breasts."

Seven of Nine was a really interesting character. Probably more interesting than Harry Kim, Kes, and later-series Chakotay combined. Maybe Tuvok as well? The fact that a new addition can be more entertaining then two or three series regulars is a pretty big thing. I liked her mentor relationships with the Doctor and Janeway, as well. She was kind of like Data but Data wanted to learn about humanity on his own volition; Seven was ripped out of the mechanical world of the Borg and had to deal with being human again.

T'pol was an interesting character, too. In the beginning she was almost the anti-Spock. Having been from a space faring world she honestly knew more than what Archer and Co. knew but came off as arrogant, resulting in Archer choosing to do the opposite. It was Knowledge Vs. the Chain of Command. I don't think her character was hampered by having a developed chest...But I think it was hampered by the writing. They took every opportunity to put her in the decontamination chamber, or in a skimpy robe for massages, and what not. It was sort of juvenile at times. It's been long enough since I've seen Voyager to say if they did the same there.

I can't believe I am reading this thread. that said, Ryan is a good actress. Sirtis, IMO, is less than average. besides, boobs are always an asset. no matter what. if men had it, they'd be hired for it. no matter what :p

Because the word BREASTS caught your attention..that is why you are reading this..

But more importantly, it was interesting to see how the poll would go, and I am not surprised..

Just proves my point that, as I have said elsewhere, sex isn't a bad thing...if done tastefully..

I think Sirtis was hired for looks, as was Ryan but the difference is that Ryan is a very talented actress, Sirtis was so-so.

Sex sells, always has, always will....especially for Star Trek whose target market is males 18-35!

Second option for both. Nobody gets to complain anymore, really. TV is the exclusive domain of women now. Every show has at least one and generally two or three good looking male characters.

To be cast for having big breasts, they would first have to have big breasts.

They don't.

Well, you are right, they are not huge. But they are not small either. I have sampled many breasts in my time, and I really like Ryan's. But then they went ahead and put her into that jumpsuit and Borgafied them...And I am quite sure that wasn't because of any other reason than to draw our eyes to them...and it worked...probably the two best reasons to watch that show..wink wink..
