Why? The breasts

Sirtis and Ryan were cast for their rolls because..

  • They had big breasts...the fact they could act was secondary

  • How dare you!!! they were serious actresses who just happened to have big breasts

Actually, Sirtis was just another character...

It was Voyager and Enterprise, the two UPN Treks, that invented the breast stuffed into the cat suit as the every day duty uniform requirement.

If they just wanted a hot bod, they'd have hired a Playboy Bunny to play Troi, and although one can sometimes envision a bunny tail on the purple suit - :) - no, that's just ridiculous to think she was hired for her boobs.
Actually I think Troi may have been the most difficult character to get in TNG. Data is interesting and challenging, but has the framework of an android to work within, the makeup, the idea of being a machine. Similar with Worf, his whole getup, and being Klingon. Whereas the Betazoid was something new entirely, but without any physical props to work with. No, the boobs don't count.
Now a lot of people cringe at the Troi "I sense he's hiding something", but that's not Sirtis' fault any more than the way Wesley's writing exacerbated the annoyances with that character.

Come on, everything Sirtis wore had a plunging neckline accessorised with a camel toe.

Just like Seven & T'Pol, she was the only one on the entire ship dressed that way. Then factor in the Enterpise-D holds like a thousand people, then you understand that she was just there for the sex appeal.

if you kinda look crosseyed at her resume, she almost could be a playboy bunny.

If only :bolian: But anyway, my point is that none of them would have gotten the jobs if they couldn't do the lines and bring something to it, so its a whole package kind of thing, not one of A or B but C, or in this case, I'm thinking D - in short I'm accusing this whole thread of being too linear and two dimensional, when obviously we want to be thinking in...rounder...dimensions.....

I wonder why T'Pol wasn't included in this, as well. Come on, if anyone was hired for the breasts, it was Jolene. She's a good actress, but come on people, let's be honest.

I think the same goes for Ryan. But Sirtis? Nah, don't think so. She was hired for her looks as well, but not necessarily her breasts. Like Linda Park, who doesn't have big breasts at all.... she was hired because she's pretty and has a lean figure, though. The role required it. Well, the producers did, at any rate.

So I can't really vote for anything here.

they were cast because they were the breast-- I mean best actresses that auditioned. they probably searched the whole areola-- *ahem* area to find the right one. stop nipple--um . . . nitpicking . . . just make sure to double D-- double check your facts, but I guess that doesn't change the underwire--underlying fact that they did come across as simple eyecandy

sorry for all the puns, I was just having funbags--dammit just having fun! jugs of fun!
I think if this were a game I'd have racked up a lot of points! I guess I'll just go back to stacking up some cans . . .
help me I think I'm going bazongas! are you my mammary!?

*sigh* too much free time
:D

I don't know if breasts were the deciding factor with Sirtis, but looks definitely. She always wearing some silky, girly outfit while every other woman was dressed in a UNIFORM. Ryan, c'mon smoking hod chick first, then they gave her good stuff to act and she did a good job. Sirtis was never given anything substantial so she became set dressing. Apperance was a major factor in their casting, if it wasn't they would have cast Linda Hunt in their roles.

Not when she was cast - she wears a uniform in the first episode - remember?

Why Ryan and Sirtis?
I think Ryan is really good actress, and Sirtis is ok.

But when you're mentioning getting hired because of looks, I think Jolene is a perfect example for this. Her acting is terrible and T'Pol is one of the worst and the most boring ST characters ever, mostly because of her.

Visual judgments aside, the ability to correctly deliver your lines and hit your marks is NOT as easy as you think. And no, you're not given infinite takes to get your line readings right.

You can't do the job, you're fired ... no matter HOW you look.
