the illness (spoilers thru S4 or thereabouts)

Temis the Vorta

Fleet Admiral

So can we safely assume the illness that killed Danielle's crew was unstuck-in-timeness? Or is there something else yet to be explained?

Yeah, I agree that's most likely the illness that affected Danielle's team. The question is why didn't she get sick or any of the survivors of Oceanic 815 (especially Locke and Eko).

I don't think its been confirmed one way or another, but I don't think the theory doesn't have its merits. We've never really figured out what the deal with the vaccine has been and if that really does cure this "sickness."

I suspect the vaccine and the biohazard suits were just a ruse, either part of a Dharma experiment or a distraction from the real source of the sickness.

What precisely causes the sickness? I thought Desmond got it because of the hatch explosion, but then why would Danielle's team get sick?

Could she have been immune because she was pregnant?

If it's not unstuckness, it's something they haven't introduced yet, and the last thing we need is more stuff being introduced. Well maybe the poison gas, but it seems like Danielle would have figured they were being gassed.

I get the impression the sickness was originally going to be a bigger part of the overall plot, but after the early 2nd season (at a time when, let's face it, they didn't know where they were headed with the series) they went in a new direction. But they threw us a bone in season 4 and gave us a strong indication of what the sickness was (Unstuck in time) and that's the last we'll hear of it.

we found out the biohazard suits were a ruse when desmond realized kelvin had been lying.

as to why danielle's team got sick is the same reason the people on the freighter who tried to reach the island with out going on the correct coordinates did.
you appraoch the island the wrong direction and go through some type of field that causes the unstuch effect.

maybe danielle was able to find a constant or yeah the pregancy helped her.

Any chance Alex could've been her constant--maybe without Danielle even knowing? Or maybe even Ben?

I mean, Danielle was totally obsessed with getting Alex back and getting back at Ben. Would that be sufficient? Of course, how would Danielle know she'd get Alex back?

I'm looking at the "Solitary" transcript, and it definitely does not sound like the time-unstuck-ness.

"Our vessel was 3 days out of Tahiti when our instruments malfunctioned. It was night, a storm, the sounds. The ship slammed into rocks, ran aground, the hull breached beyond repair. So, we made camp, dug out this temporary shelter. Temporary. Nearly 2 months we survived here, 2 months before -- SAYID: Your distress signal? The message I heard, you said, "It killed them all."
DANIELLE: We were coming back from the Black Rock. It was them. They were the carriers.
SAYID: Who were the carriers?
DANIELLE: The others.
SAYID: What others? What is the Black Rock? Have you seen other people on this island?
DANIELLE: No, but I hear them. Out there, in the jungle. They whisper. You think I'm insane."

You contract the unstuckness as you pass through the Island Barrier. This happened to them on the Island two months after they crashed, and it was brought by the Others.

Of course, I think it's safe to assume Rosseau was lying about some/much of her past.

"DANIELLE: We were part of a science team.
SAYID: A science team armed with rifles? Was Robert on the team?"
Sounds like Dharma, doesn't it?

Danielle could easily have been part of a second Dharma science Team, sent to find out what happened after the purge.

As for the sickness... Well we saw that the Others could make people sick when they wanted by activating "implants" in the person. They did this with Claire. So it is possible that they were somehow able to put implants into some of Danielle's team and activate them.

what? what implants?

When Juliette first returned to the Beach with Jack and she was supposed to spy on the Losites for The Others. They knew the Losties wouldn't trust her unless she did something to help them.

So Ben activated an implant he had put in Claire that made her really sick. Only Juliette would be able to help her, by giving her an special injection.

I don't recall that being an implant. I thought it was just something they gave her ... I don't remember exactly now. But, I so didn't get that it was an implant.

We only have Rousous word for what happened, for all we know, she could have been the only one that went crazy, and she could have killed all the other people on her ship herself.

I'm rewatching S1 and just saw this ep a few days ago. I think it's pretty obvious it's not the 'unstuckness' that happened to them. Or at least in the same way.

They were on the island for months before they started getting sick. And apparently only after visiting the Black Rock and interacting with the Others or the Whispers.

I think we still have yet to learn exactly what this sickness was.

It was. Ben specifically says "the implant we put in Claire" and that she would be getting sick right about the time Juliette and Jack got back to the beach.

perhaps the bearing on which you enter or leave the island determines how long or short it takes you to become unstuck. there are also several establishing shots of survivors having contact w/ each other prior to boarding, so there could be possible constants on island.

just a thought

Danielle could easily have been part of a second Dharma science Team, sent to find out what happened after the purge.
The Purge happened several years after Danielle's team arrived. She said she'd been on the island 16 years, and Horace told Locke that the Purge happened 12 years ago.

Since the barrier is invisible, it could flow onto the island like unseen fog. Hey, why can't Smokey be part of the barrier? :D Except coming into contact with him tends to be more swiftly fatal.

The Others might know how to manipulate the barrier and direct it where they like. Or someone can. Who knows who it was that Danielle id'ed as an "Other"?
