New Fan Collection DVD

AviTrek

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
The long rumored Alternative Reality DVD set is finally being released. 5 disc, 20 episodes. I wonder if that translates into 1 disc/4 episodes per show.

Let the episode speculation begin.

Wow sounds cool. The mirror universe eps. always have something great to offer. Does anyone know if they'll be voting for the eps. over at startrek.com?

The voting happened a while ago. With a release date in September, this set is well past the point of picking episodes.

I hope they picked the best of the DS9 mirror episodes, because I don't think we need to see "Emperor's New Cloak" on this set. Did DS9 do any other "alternate universe" stories? The closest thing I can think of is the lame "it was all a simulation" stuff from "The Search, part 2." I'm sure they'll find at least one or two episodes that already appeared on the previous Fan Collective sets to put on this one just to make us complain. :p

Given the description on TVShowsonDVD of

a collection featuring bizarre and strange of episodes...see your favorite characters behaving contrary to type, in familiar but odd circumstances".

I wonder if they're going to expand the remit to include episodes like 'Our Man Bashir' and 'Power Play', since some of the cast are out of character.

After all, if they only include alternate realities, IIRC we would have:

In a Mirror, Darkly
Mirror, Mirror
Yesterday's Enterprise
Parallels
Crossover
Through the Looking Glass
Shattered Mirror
The Emperor's New Cloak
Living Witness

and possibly (depending if you could them as AR episodes)

Future Imperfect (since it's not really an alternate reality)
Tapestry (since it has Picard's alternate future)
Resurrection (since IIRC the only mirror main cast member is the Intendant)

Of course, I'm sure I've missed some here and there :)

There's certainly plenty to choose from. But I think adding episodes just because the crew are acting weird stretches the theme too much.

Altered Realities

Shockwave
Shockwave, Part II
Twilight
E2
Storm Front, Part I
Storm Front, Part II
In A Mirror, Darkly Part I

Future Imperfect
The Inner Light
Tapestry

not sure but would/'t all good things kinda count as a alternate reality?. Or is that more of a alternate time

not sure but would/'t all good things kinda count as a alternate reality?. Or is that more of a alternate time

I don't see a significant distinction between the two. The quantum mechanics presented in Parallels would seem to imply that even though the "alternate" timelines were often "fixed", they continued to exist in a different dimension. Thus, even though the alternate timelines weren't true alternate dimensions, they did give us a glimpse in to one.

I don't quite see the appeal of these Fan Collectives. It is just TPTB getting more blood from the stone and re-releasing yet again eps that have been available on DVD for years. I'll pass.

The appeal is for people who can't afford/don't want to spend the money for all the DVDs. This gives them the chance to buy a limited subset at a drastically reduced price.

^ That's a valid point. I can see the appeal of having Borg or Q episodes all in one place.

Myself, I'm usually only tempted to double-dip when some thought has been put into bonus features. I resisted buying the Fan Collectives for a long time but gave in for the Captain's Log. Considering the effort required to film new interviews, I was disappointed how brief they turned out to be. A lost opportunity, where a proper TV quality documentary was needed to make the package worthwhile.

I remember when you could vote for these episodes on startrek.com they said the all the Mirror Universe episodes would be included regardless. So that guarantees Mirror, Mirror, Crossover, Through The Looking Glass, Shattered Mirror, Resurrection, The Emperor's New Cloak, and In The Mirror, Darkly. So with those seven established and the knowledge that there will be twenty episodes on the set that leaves 13 fan voted episodes.

I wish I could find the full episode list they made available for voting, but google seems to have no luck.

It was a pop-up type box just for voting. They probably shut it down within a few weeks. I'll check over at startrek.com, in the news archive but I doubt any links still work.

Looking at that list again, I'm betting Living Witness won't make this set. Shame, it has the same feel as an MU episode. It's not on that list and yet Fury made the grade? Go figure. Not enough VGR fans will have thought to look it up, then go through the process of adding it manually. I said so back in the day.

Well...frankly, it's a marketing tool in some ways. I didn't have any Star Trek on dvd until the fan collectives came out. They made me remember how much I love Trek. I now own all the seasons of TOS, VOY, and ENT, and 2-5 of TNG (I'm done--no movies, DS9, or TNG 1, 6-7 for me). I snagged all of Voyager during the big April sale at Amazon.

Of course, that means I won't be buying the new set--I'll probably have all the non-DS9 eps!

That said--folks with no seasons buy these sets, I think--then if Paramount's lucky, they buy some seasons! Actually, I like having some DS9 on the collectives since I never intend to buy any seasons--at least I have a sample of all the series.

You know at times I wonder how Paramount decides what qualifies for these sets. Just looking over that list I question how the following count as "alternate realities."

Vanishing Point - Not an alternate reality at all, just a hallucination which was very similar to regular reality with no noticeable differences.

Future's End - Strictly time travel with nothing alternate going on. Hell, the timeline isn't even screwed with too much.

Fury - Again, just ordinary time travel. Kes messes with the timeline a little, but not in a serious enough way that alters anything.
