I've Been Watching Babylon 5 again...

Haven't seen it for 10 years at least, and I'd always suspected DS9 had 'borrowed' some ideas from it (the ongoing arcs, the war storyline, the 'small compact starship') But last night I was watching a season 2 episode and heard about this:

Bureau 13 is a secret organisation with ties to the inner circles of EarthGov, it deals in black projects and other top secret programs to sensitive for public knowledge.

I was quite literally speachless, and to be honest I'm amazed J. Michael Straczynski didn't cause a major stir about it, Section 31 is such a blatant rip-off.

I love DS9, but I would have thought they'd at least remover the number from the title!

^This thread predates the existence of the Internet. People discussed it in cave paintings next to threads about who would win in a fight between the Enterprise-D and a Star Destroyer.

^I'm not the one claiming Deep Space Nine ripped off Babylon 5. Mainly because I looked at a calendar and realised it was 2008 and nobody cares anymore.

Let's face it, the Bureau 13 concept was hardly an original one. Sci-Fi had secret organisations like that before. Ever heard of the Tal'Shiar or the Obsidian Order. The similarites of the names? Well, I take it as a coincidence.

So by that logic nobody cares about anything on this forum then? Seeing as DS9 ended in 1999?

A "secret, beyond reproach extra-Governmental agency of humans wishing to do whatever it takes to further their goals" I thought was a pretty close coincidence.
I thought it was interesting anyway, if people don't want to discuss it they can go and do something else can't they?

At this point, this forum is for people who actually like the show. People who insist on raising conspiracy theories about it ripping off Babylon 5 clearly don't fall in to that category.

Go in the TOS forum and moan about the sets, go in the TNG forum and call the show politically correct. Go in the Enterprise forum and moan about "These are the Voyages...". You'll get the exact same reaction.

There are still interesting things to discuss about DS9, similarities between it and Babylon 5 is not one of them.

DS9 did not ever rip off or borrow anything from Babylon 5.

A secret bureau concept is an old cliche that predates both shows.

There are a number of similarities, enough so that we'll probably never know for certain what degree of transfer there might have been. Order versus chaos was a big thing on both, for instance---a bit bigger on B5 though.

Bottom line is, it's been so many years that it really doesn't matter anymore.....

NOT going down this road for the millionth time....for reasons which have been explained time and time again by both Neroon and myself.

An occasional thread about it is okay IF it stays civilized. However, because we had a thread about this only about 6 weeks ago...AND because this one is already showing earmarks of becoming uncivilized....

Thread closed.

Move along, people. Nothing to see here.
