In the 10 years from 2365 upto 2375, humanity encountered both the Borg and the Dominion; two vast empires, very different from one another, but equally determined to reign supreme in the alpha quadrant.
Given these new threats, what do we expect might happen in the 25 years after Voyager returns home, upto 2400?
As the Borg continue pushing their territorial borders down into the beta quadrant, the first great empire they'll encounter will be the Romulan Star Empire.
Throughout the 24th century, the Romulans have kept a very low profile, and nobody really knows what they've been up to. Would they be prepared with new technologies? Would their skill with artificial singularities be an advantage to them, to use as a weapon capable of sucking whole ships into oblivion? Would they be more likely to ask for help or try to deal with the Borg by themselves?
Would humanity or the Klingons try to forge an alliance with Romulus? Would the Vulcans willingly step into the firing line to defend their sibling race? Would the Romulans need to be destroyed before it motivated humanity and the Klingons to truely unite, from witnessing the gravity of their situation.
What of the Cardassians, and the Breen? They'd be at the far side of the action, so they might not feel threatened, or would they?
And what would the all-seeing-eyes of the Dominion make of the Borg invasion? Would they sit and watch? Remember that assimilation does not eliminate solids, it only arms them. So would they just sit and watch?
If Federation space became overrun with Borg, what would become of the wormhole? Would it be controlled by the Borg, the Dominion or the Federation? Or would it be destroyed? Could the wormhole aliens/Pah-Wraiths have any influence?
Could the Borg make it through and try to assimilate the Founders? What would happen to the Founders' homeworld if Borg nanoprobes got into their Great Lake? Afterall, a few volts of electricity were enough to torture a baby changeling into changing shape. Could nanoprobes use this electric-shock-therapy to force their assimilation, perhaps to alter Founder psychology into submission, to counteract them changing shape to expel the nanoprobes?
Might we see Borg-changelings as emergent beings? What would they be like, and what would their philosophy and alliegences be?
Let's imagine what might become of our part of the galaxy. What is created and destroyed, and how political relations might change.
