Did Shatner turn down a cameo in ST XI?

With the now infamous Abrams secrecy surrounding the shoot, what’s the chance that Shatner may have actually filmed a cameo scene already? Or it could be done quietly doing the inevitable re-shoots/pick-up scenes. It would only take a couple of hours on a closed set.

Just look as to how Cloverfield was filmed in total secrecy – few people outside of Hollywood even knew the movie was being made.

All of this over the top, “I wish I could have been in the new Trek”, publicity by ole Bill could be a great misdirection campaign.

Personally, I don't buy the line about them needing Nimoy. I can't think why they would need him. If he didn't sign on, they would've simply put Quinto in the old man make-up and called it a day.

^That would mean that I would have to watch Glenn Beck, though.
The level of smug would be lethal.

Actually, what Beck showed of it last night had Shatner really going after him. At one point Beck accuses Shatner of "overacting" on Trek, and Shatner basically says "what is it that you do on this show every night?"

All very good natured and funny - but Beck looks overmatched in terms of manic energy and control of the conversation. I certainly will check it out, but probably on the re-run after the new BSG on SCIFI.
I may have to watch this. Thanks for the info.

I don't know. You could be right, but putting Quinto in old man make-up while the "real" Old Spock that Nimoy could play is alive well would be somewhat disappointing. I'd except similar howls of protest from Shatner fans if Pine was put in old person make up for some purpose in the movie. ;)

I think it'll be a lot easier to accept a recast of the younger characters since the current surviving TOS actors obviously aren't young anymore. A recast has never been done on scale like this in the Star Trek universe, and I do think Nimoy could potentially help make the transition go much more smoothly and easily. Also if this movie ends up looking back on Spock's life as has been indicated through bits and pieces of info, I think having Nimoy play a role in that is going to make it more poignant and meaningful than Quinto could with old man make up.

If you didn't hear it from Abrams that Shatner turned down a cameo, I wouldn't take anything he says as serious. Seems to me old Bill is getting even crazier as the years go on.

Well, since Shatner isn't claiming to have turned down a cameo, it's unclear what you are referring to.

Personally- the way i see it -is that they're being so darn tight lipped about this movie, that at this point, all bets are off.
Im expecting a surprise or two.

I totally agree and am waiting to be "surprised/shocked" next May

Shatner could've easily played his own grandfather, regardless of whatever reasons he had for not taking a cameo if one were offered to him.

I can imagine a number of reasons why Shatner would not have wanted to do that. And, frankly, I would not have wanted to see that.

I want to see the Denny Crane/Cogley version of that graphic (no, the previous Shatner/Nimoy version won't work...he doesn't look like that anymore).

Somehow I would find that EXTREMELY comforting.

That's the best way to look at it. No point in dissecting everything that has been said in public.
