XP service pack 3??

As of last update, no, it does not. However, it will install via automatic updates. I disable automatic downloads and get notifications instead. That way I can check and uncheck updates I want. I always uncheck IE 7.
Ah ok. I always do that too.

I upgraded to XP SP3 a few days ago. Now, for some reason, I'm barraged with popups and bubbles urging me to switch to Windows Vista!!!

(yes, I'm kidding)

Any particular reason why you support IE? IE has always been a problematic TURD for every incarnation of Windows.

IE7 is not so bad - tabbed browsing, quite speedy etc etc - I still prefer Firefox but at least we have good browsers to choose from now - Opera isn't bad either.

Firefox has had tabbed browsing since 2001, and ever since then I've never thought about returning to IE. I always find the IE frustrations amusing to read about.

I know that Firefox has had tabbed browsing for years - I've been using it as my primary browser for a very long time.

I was merely pointing out that as a browser the extra features IE7 has over IE6 make it a better option IMHO.

BTW - Firefox is far from perfect, the memory holes have been a problem for me before, and although I liked the beta of the new version, it will hopefully get a bit more tweaking before it's release.

Installing SP3 on our test rig at work didn't go too well - took 3 reboots, a visit to the recovery console and a reinstall of most of it's drivers - to get the thing to work properly, so I might just wait until I can figure out what caused the problems and do some more testing before I let it loose on my home system.....

Understood. But IMHO, Firefox has always been light years ahead of IE. The one feature I like is that it will offer the option to restore the previous session in the event it has crashed.

Yes found that's quite handy :) In the past some versions had been less than robust and it was pain coming back to Trekbbs after crash and all the unread threads were shown as read.

The session restore eliminated that problem :)

Yes it's a nice feature, IE has it too.

Like USS KG5 I have also been using Firefox, since they called it Phoenix in fact, but there are times and reasons for using IE as well, and especially with IE 8 there is really nothing to choose between them now. It's just a brand loyalty pissing match. If one or the other comes out with some "Great New Feature" it will pull ahead, but really, it's just a browser after all.

I really don't know why "tabbed browsing" is supposed to be such an advantage. Personally, I hate it. I guess I've just gotten too used to the "ALT+TAB" function when browsing on different websites simultaniously.

I find it can be quite good when a site uses a lot of different windows - having them all contained in one window in tabs is quite useful, like a shopping site, bank etc...

Then I like to have windows for each site - if that makes sense.

Well after a couple of weeks. or more, using XP service pack 3 beta and now the official version, with IE6.

My system seems faster, smoother and problem free.

I like tabbed browsing because it doesn't clutter up my dock and/or task bar.

BINGO. It's easier to navigate among many tabs. When I hear an IE supporter sneer at tabbed browsing I chalk it up to the typical MS drone jealousy.

I prefer Firefox to IE, but I do find it take up about 50-25% more memory than IE.

Not enough to make a big difference, but there it is.

FF3 is supposed to consume less memory.

I am on dial-up (28.8) and have never had Firefox hang. Can't say that with IE, even on my high speed connection at work, where we have to use that turd to log our time.

Boy who did you piss off to end up with such a poor internet service? You've obviously got more patience than the rest of us.

SP3 doesn't really add very much in the way of new updates at all, Network Access Protection and Blackhole Router Detection are the two biggest updates it brings, the rest are just roll-ups of all the post SP2 updates. Working in a computer repair shop and having my own repair business on the side, I've been besieged by clients calling about SP3. The most prominent problem has been the BSOD/Restart loop, which to fix requires a startup in safe mode followed by uninstalling SP3. The improved performance many have seen in their install of XP doesn't seem to be a universal thing, some clients have said it helped alot while others say it hasn't helped very much or not at all. The funniest part is that the BSOD/Restart loop seems to affect legitimate, non-pirated, installs of XP more than it hits pirated installs, yeah I keep up on the tech forum news legal or not. All said, I'm waiting a while before I update my machines with SP3, just to give MS a chance to work the bugs out, I remember the problems people had with SP2 when it first came out quite well.

I love Firefox personally. And I've been using it for years since close to the beginning. However, IE does have a place. Especially in the business world, there are too many (stupid) websites that restrict browsers to IE.

Use CTRL+TAB then...

Why are y'all dissing IE7? I love it, but I've been having some issues with Java, though I think those problems might've existed before IE7 as well...

Well, having tried the FF3 beta and not liking it (I went back to FF2. FF3 had major memory leaks), I have to say it looks a lot like IE 7.

This. They're browsers, they render web pages, and they're all good at it. I run Firefox (no addons) as my default browser but I've no issues using IE or Opera or Safari on PCs where it isn't available.

The disciples of Firefox are definitely the worst, it seems every second user thinks they're leading a revolution.
