Questions we'll likely never have answered

Rear Admiral
It occurred to me while watching tonight's episode that while recent Lost episodes are making it much more apparent that the show has a direction it's headed in, there have been numerous questions raised earlier on in the show which seem like there's just been too much time passed to go back and answer without being extremely contrived. One that kept spinging to mind during this episode was why at the end of season 2, Ben had sent Michael to bring back certain individuals - Jack, Kate, & Sawyer (and was there supposed to be one more? Hurley??). We know that Jack was brought to help treat Ben, but why the others? It seems there's next to no point in answering now.

Another one that the creators have actually stated they had no reason behind (IIRC) was the significance of Hurley's numbers (which I believe they stated were pretty much random). I also wonder if we'll get more of an explanation as to the actual purpose of those hatches and The Button.

On a similar note, does anyone know of any scenes that have struck you as quite telling that the creators are now re-inventing the story and changing things they had originally stated? Tonight, when Ben ordered the smoke monster to attack the soldiers, Locke confronted him that he had previously stated he didnt know what Old Smokie was. Sure, Ben has lied before but this really struck me as a new idea that was recently thought up that forced them to backtrack on his previous statement. Rousseau's death also struck me as quite anti-climactic for a character that's been around for so long. I got the impression here too that the writers just didn't know what to do with her anymore - similar to Shannon. Any others?

I don't know why everybody thinks Rousseau is dead. And its been said the statue will be explained.

I'm still wondering why the Others didn't just take Jack, Kate, and Sawyer when they were surrounded in "The Hunting Party." Jack and Kate even have that conversation later on in the season about how the Others weren't interested in them because they were "damaged goods." Ben knew he had the tumor by this point, but I'm not so sure the writers did. I'd also really like to see an epic Ben flashback that shows us what the hell his plan was during his "Henry Gale" phase, but I'm worried it will never happen. That would make a whole lot of season 2 seem pointless in retrospect, even as great as those scenes were the first time around. "You guys got any milk?"

I am new to the show. I just started watching the DVDs, and I'm currently in the beginning of season 3.

The questions I want answered are fairly random and not necessarily a part of the greater story, but I'm still curious about them. Also, if they are answered sometime in Season 3 or early season 4, I don't wanna know!

What is the deal with Claire's baby? Why does she have to raise him alone? I was really hoping he would turn out to be some sort of weird demon spawn. Haha.

Why are the numbers EVIL?

What is the deal with Jack's (and apparently Claire's?!) father? Why did he have contact with so many of the flight passengers in Australia?

They brought Hurley so that he could go back and tell the survivors what happened.

I'm guessing they brought Kate and Sawyer because they knew they could use them as leverage to get Jack to do the surgery.

I don't think he actually had a plan. Ever since Mikhail and the Flame, I've always assumed Ben had gone there to use the equipment in the station then was captured by Rousseau on his way back to the barracks. I think "Henry Gale" was simply his best improvisation to explain his presence on the island without letting the 815ers know who he really was.

I'm guessing because Alex told Ben that Rousseau was dead and Alex would know. I'm sure once the mercs captured Alex they probably checked on Rousseau and Karl and confrimed they were dead.

And yeah, a podcast not too long ago confirmed that they will revisit the Four toed statue.

Yeah, that makes the most sense. I believe I read somewhere that the producers intend on showing this moment later on from Ben's perspective.

One of the things that I'm afraid will never be answered is how is that Ben has the ability to gather all the information he does on people. It's my contention there is no way humanly possible for him to have known some of things he knew about Sawyer, or Locke's dad.

So I'm wondering if this is a simply a contrivance to drive the story or whether his seemingly all-knowing, all-seeing ability will be explained at some point.

Outside of using Mikhail as a spy, I think the smoke monster has something to do with tapping into people's memories... how he knew so much about the people on the freighter, I have no idea. He's just that good.

I'd like to know about "the sickness" that affected Danielle's crew, but didn't affect her. I guess some people on the freightor are getting it, but not our Losties.

She also said something about Brandon has the key? I'd like to know what she was talking about there.

The Hurley bird. And the numbers too. Originally Hurley said he got them from some guy who heard them at a listening station, or something like that.

I like to know more about Libby and how she is connected to both Hurley and Desmond.

Where in the world is Cindy?

It was also stated that the Others could move through the jungle silently, are we going to hear about that....were they transported too?

The Whispers.

I'd like to know more about Kelvin, Radinski and the time before Desmond showed up on the Island.

How about the magic box? Couldn't Ben have used to get something to save Alex?

So what was the deal with the Others wanting people that were special? Were they experimenting on them? What kind of experiments? There seemed to be alot of importance about who was special and who wasn't, but we haven't heard much about that lately.

Where did all of the hair brushes go? Unless they were removed by the spies in Australia, but the plane was taken down by accident....Ben didn't have a hand in crashing the plane on purpose, unless you count the magic box doing it for him because needed a surgeon. And Ben's people couldn't have removed the hair brushes so quikly, because it was only Ethan at the crash site for the first few weeks.

Where is that Richard guy? The guy that doesn't age. Is he still around or did he split? Did I miss something about that?

I am sure that I have more questions, and I probably missed the answers to a few of them....maybe it is just me, but Lost seems too random now. I still like the show, but I hate thinking about aspects of Lost that turn out to be red herrings or forgotten plot lines. It is frustrating. Only my opinion though, please don't condemn me. And it is entirely possible that I missed some key elements of the show that could explain alot.

Well we still have two seasons left to go. I'd be willing to guess that most of next season will be off the island, focusing on Jack trying to go back, and the last season will be back on the island. It will be in this last season that we will hopefully get most of the island answers (especially if all of the non-Oceanic 6 are alive and living there for all that time, hanging out with the remaining Others at the Temple. They should learn quite a lot if they are doing that).

The Numbers will probably never be explained, but left as a dramatic device.

how is that Ben has the ability to gather all the information he does on people.
If he has the ability to teleport to different times - which was implied in yesterday's episode - then he has all the time he needs to gather all the information he wants.

The Numbers theoretically could also be explained by time-traveller manipulation.

And speaking of Danielle - I think she's injured but alive. The notion of her going on the warpath against Ben when he learns what happened this week is too good a story to resist.

Where did all of the hair brushes go?

Ethan searched through the luggage for hairbrushes from female passengers (and usually it's only women who pack brushes) and matched them to the luggage tags to get the DNA from the hair and find out which women were the best candidates for fertility experiments.

Why doesn't Hurley lose any weight?

Why did Desmond keep injecting himself even though he discovered the Kurgan was lying?

Why did the island demand a sacrifice (Boone) from Locke?

1. He was seen binging several times

2. What is a Kurgan? (other than what Wikipedia told me which is something about a burial mound)
