Was Janeway's hairstyle too 1800s ?

TransporterBeam

Lieutenant Commander
Was Captain Janeway's original hairstyle too 1800s ? It sort of looked like something from the old west. her hair is like the hairstyles of the women from the place that got raided out in midwest America.

There were lots of discussions in the early years of VOY about this topic. Her hair styles changed a few times but they had trouble settling on the Janeway look. I think they ultimately got it right though.

I never liked the power bun.

but there was an interesting thing about her hair. They had to make it look strong and authorative while at the same time keeping it soft and femenine

the look they had with her in the later seasons was perfect

I liked the ponytail look the best, because it was the only look that didn't seem to require an hairstylist.

I agree, the power bun was unrealistic for a woman in command of a ship that may be called to the bridge on a moment's notice at any time of day or night, although I admit I don't know how long it would take to get one's hair into that style.

The later seasons hit it spot on - feminine, yet still strong.

It doesn't take too long to put your hair up like that- a couple of twists, a few pins and it is done. In some ways a bun is more practical than a bob.

yeah, but long hair can get caught in stuff, even if it's pinned up a part can come down

As it did when the Caretaker's shockwave hit the ship.

and yet somehow, whithout a mirror and while running to engineering she's able to fix it perfectly

That's why she's so awesome.

I noticed recently that Chakotay's hair stands about two inches tall in some episodes. It seems to defy gravity and stand vertically at the crown of head. I actually like his hair, but that's a lot of hair spray.

well even in the Delta Quadrant they have hair and makeup people running after them

I agree. For me putting my hair up involves 30 minutes in front of a mirror and a lot of swearing.

that's why I pay $400 every six months to straighten mine and I wear it down

That works most of the time but there's nothing like having a hair clip fall out of your hair while in the middle of a pilates session. I may need to resort to pig tails...
