MLB Chatter 2008

Credit to the Giants for coming up with what has to be the best promo ever. For every strike out Giants pitching records tonight in San Diego (nine as of this writing), they knock that dollar amount off the price of a bleacher seat for Tuesday's game against Colorado. Maybe the next time they'll do it, they'll do it in a game Zito's pitching.

And on other teams that have former Sox prospects like Gabbard and Murphy on the Rangers, players are having success.

Yeah, those guys have been doing well despite the odds.

You don't know how much I would like to have Gabbard back after that whole Gagne disaster last season.

And the thing with Gagne is, he didn't want to go to Boston. He was getting a chance to be a closer in Texas, and i'm pretty sure he was pitching better down here too. They were looking at re signing him after the season.

Well at the time, I liked what I had seen from him in Texas and liked the move. But man did that ever backfire. Thankfully he is now off blowing games for the Brewers.

I remember I was at a game last season when he was closing against Cleveland, and thinking, "Damn that was nice." But yeah, he's the Brewer's problem now.

Conversely, if a team goes in the toilet at the wrong time, it can have one of the great late season collapses of all-time and not even sniff the World Series. The '07 Mets, for example.

I was going to use the example of the '69 Cubs....

Not sure how this happened as I wasn't paying close attention, but leave it to the Dodgers to manage to get their second baseman and manager ejected during a pitching change

Atlanta Braves @ New York Mets
7:10 ET
Jurjjens (2-2) vs. Pelfrey (2-0)

I'm hoping the Mets give up another grand slam today. That would make my week. :D

Looks like the Twins may have rushed Liriano back too soon after his Tommy John surgery. His first two starts were shaky, but in his last outing, he didn't even make it through the 1st inning. Of course, not every pitcher does make a successful return from the surgery. I hope Liriano's not one of them, but it looks like he's going to need to make some adjustments.

I think his career as a power pitcher is over. He just can't throw as hard as he used to. Maybe that'll get better after time, but in any case he's going to be at Rochester for a while.

Korecky is coming up as a reliever. I don't know much about him though. That still leaves a hole in the rotation as the book is still out on Slowey. I'd like to see them bring Mulvey up if Slowey can't go. He's been pitching really well.

But then they will have to adjust it to knock off a dollar for every run he gives up. Soon the seats will be free!

I just noted that today, two teams from Toronto and Kansas City will have played matches - Toronto FC and the Kansas City Wizards played at BMO Field in Toronto (and won 2-0!) while the Blue Jays will play against the Royals down at KC...

I apologise for asking this as someone not as familiar with baseball as with other sports, but I was wondering - how are the Jays looking this season?

I like it when Philly plays Pittsburgh. First, the Phillies usually win those games and second, I can watch Pittsburgh's TV coverage.

Theres only 1 thing I like more then seeing the Mets beat John Smotz and thats seeing the Mets beat Tom Glavine. Too bad Bobby Cox isn`t gonna feed him to King David`s bat.

I swear, two dominant pitching performances in a row, one by Buchholz, one by Beckett, and they are both losses due to an offense that has been pathetic as of late. There is a silver lining, seeing both of them pitch very well, and the offense will come around, but it is hard to watch. Hopefully a day off will be good for the Sox.

Barry Zito sucks, but I don't think I can put it all on him. The Giants defense sucked too in that first inning. Still, it's hard to get behind a guy who is getting paid 126 million and has a 0-6 record. It's just really interesting to watch him pitch and struggle lately. Oh well. Tonight starts a series with Colorado and our 3 best pitchers are going, including two pitchers who are posting Cy Young numbers these days.

So, is Roger Clemens a pedo or what? What do you guys think went on with him and Mindy McCready when he was 28 and she was 15?

Dunno, but the tabloids in NYC are having field day with the story. Then the snarky site Gawker piled on today calling it the "Roger Clemens Infidelity Scandal and Schadenfreude Festival of '08."

Gawker goes on to say "They first met when she was only 15, (Miley Cyrus joke). But the most entertaining aspect of this scandal is how Clemens—heroic, honored, self-righteous, dismissive of critics, a King of New York—is turning into an uncanny baseball version of another recently fallen hero: Eliot Spitzer."

Ouch. McCready is saying she was of age when they began the affair but Clemens's cred is even more shot now.

Nothing beats a sex scandal!

I'm sure every piece of dirty laundry in his closet will come out now that he has filed a defamation suit against McNamee. Hard to show your character is being ruined if you didn't have much to start with.

How much better would it have ended up if Clemens just made a partial admission as others have. Something like, I was getting older and recovering from an injury and used HGH a couple times in 2004 to get back out there a litle faster.

That's what Pettite did and he came out looking squeaky clean.
