Janeway - worthy TREK Captain or not?

I remember getting mildly irked when Janeway cried in front of members of her crew, which I think was a wrong writing or acting choice for a female Starship Captain. I just think that she'd have done it in Private only, or maybe on a one-to-one type thing with a valued friend. But other than that, I think Janeway was a damned fine Captain. :bolian:

no, Chakotay's rank bars were always that of a full commander

Think you're wrong there, Mrs. Paris. If you look carefully, one of his "stripes" is dark, while the other two are solid -- denoting a lt. cmdr. I'll see if I can find a pic and post it. Or if you can find some pics where it shows Chakotay has three solild stripes, I'll acknowledge you're right! Chakotay being a lt. cmdr. would be consistent with the rank structure of the first exec -- he was a lt. cmdr. -- RR

i always thought the costumers got it wrong and that chakotay was supposed to be a full commander. the only reason i say this was due to in the opening credits, he was listed as commander chakotay. if he were a lt. cmdr., then the credits would've said, robert beltran as lt. commander chakotay like TNG and DS9 did for other ST characters such as data and worf, respectively. of course, maybe that's part of the reason they eventually stopped listing the character's ranks.

At first, I didn't think I would like Janeway..i thought she was too stiff and needed to loosen up, but then started to really like her after the episode "Sacred Ground" when she goes through a ritual in order to bring Kes' spirit back. I really appreciated the fact that they put a woman as a captain in Trek. It was implied in TOS that women could not become starship captains. That really irritated me, but then was so glad when they put Janeway in as a female captain.
And I agree about Tuvok. You know when I first saw him I was like: a BLACK VULCAN?!?!?! WTF?!?!?! :wtf:??? I thought all Vulcans had a greenish tint to their skin?? But he grew on me as Janeway did. :)
One memory of Voyager: I remember when Chakotay first came on the screen I was like: WOW! WHO IS THAT?!?! WHAT A HANDSOME FELLOW!!!! COOL TATTOO! :) I was ooing and awwing over him the moment I first laid eyes on him in Caretaker. HEHEHE, anyway just thought I'd share that with the fellow fans. :)

When did Janeway cry in front of her crew?

I believe I may have missed that episode.

That scene is from the episode "Coda". Since you haven't seen that episode, I'm not gonna tell you what happens..I will let you know though that it's from season 3 and a really good ep. But she does cry in that episode once..about a memory that Kim brings up about her. :) Hope that helps.

but if you want to get realy technical.......*spoiler for the episode*

she didn't cry in front of the crew because she was "dead" and they couldn't see her.

I'm currently in the middle of the third season, and I think she rocks! I love the way she strides around the bridge, and uses glances and hand signals. She doesn't hesitate, yet she'll retreat to regroup, she can handle a phaser and handle diplomacy, too. She's got steel in her voice, but she can be great one on one with people who are hurting. She's a great captain!

^ I think Janeway has always been a little nuts, BUT she did get her crew home and she was promoted for doing so. She kept her word, but I don't think she was the "Best Captain" ever.

Careful about pointing up at me and quoting "Best Captain"--I never said that! The thread title doesn't say it either!:)

Every Captain featured in Trek is legendary.

Archer, Kirk, Picard, Sisko & Janeway all did things in their career within the show that made them stand out in their class.

Janeway charted parts of the Delta Quaderant, learned tons of new info on the Borg and got home with her ship & most of the crew intact. Who wouldn't deserve to be an Admiral after that?

that's something I've always said. Janeway made more first contacts than anyone, probably including Kirk, she got her ship home in 7 years instead of 70, she was able to get a hostile species to reconsider attacking the federation....she was a fantastic captain
