What sci fi movie might've made a good Trek episode?

voggmo

Commodore
Wedlock, Logans Run? or?

Stories would have to be changed somewhat, slip in the landing party & such.

Forbidden Planet is the first one to come to mind. :) And I bet they could make something out of 2001 too. They could go to a generic moon, find a "fascinating" monolith there, and eventually discover it was set up by a very advanced alien race many years ago, before World War V or the Earth-Andorian war.

Problem: A Star Trek episode would have to explain it.

Solaris, maybe. Though it'd be a bit like a more serious, brooding version of "Shore Leave."

Just about any WWII movie (ex. "The Enemy Below" = "Balance of Terror"). But since you asked for specifically sci-fi movies, I'll go with "Forbidden Planet", even though one could argue that it was already made into a Trek episode.

It's explained right there. "...it was set up by a very advanced alien race many years ago...". Or do you mean more explaining than that?

No, I mean that a Star Trek episode would explain it (just like you did with the "set up by aliens" explanation). 2001 is much more vague and open for interpretation (especially its ending). On television they would have felt the need to explain every detail to the audience.

^^Oh yes, you're right! It would takes lots of explanation that the movie didn't have. But then again, if you get the basic premise behind it (supposing that the movie has the same plot as the novel, which is a big supposition), it could still be made into a Trek episode. I guess.

Lots of stuff from70's-80's. Logans Run would be a good choice. Charleton Heston's Omega Man, or Soylent Green; Planet of the Apes to some extent. Asimov's Nightfall could probably work. And Mutant on the Bounty. Kirk Russell's Soldier. Arnold's Total Recall. Wargames. Um, Stargate?

I think "Requiem for Methusaleh" bears more than a passing resemblance to Forbidden Planet.

Yeah, I recall rather well argued theories that supoose the Monoliths may not have been alien at all.

Actually, the sequel, "2010", was criticized as being too much like an episode of Star Trek for the very reason that it tried to explain the monoliths. So I'll go with that :).

"Aliens" also comes to mind but of course with much more of the crew surviving.

2010 is a good suggestion. :techman:

How about Silent Running? That would have been cool. It could actually be a follow-up to "The Way to Eden". :rommie:

I could see them doing The Face of Another with a troubled guest star. With an appropriately lighter and campier touch but still with a serious moral about identity and the individual; probably with Kirk, Spock and McCoy wrapping it up with some general statements and chirpy music.

Or Fahrenheit 451. Make it the planet of the week.

Excellent idea.

This... less so.

And I prefer these other theories myself. But the sequels and the novel are pretty clear that the monolith was created by an alien race, so many people tend to interpret the first movie with that in mind.
