True, but they'd all been on the ground at the Academy, it might've been a bit since they'd last taken the ol' girl out for a spin. But Sulu came aboard with Kirk and they discussed how he was just there for three weeks.

My speculation is that Captain Spock had his own five year mission, and then the Enterprise became a training ship. Commander Sulu left then, only to return in TWOK.But Sulu came aboard with Kirk and they discussed how he was just there for three weeks.
That is certainly plausible. There is supposed to be a long gap between TMP and TWOK. The only thing I can think that contradicts it, though, is the reporter in Generations who tells Kirk that the Enterprise-B is the first Starship Enterprise in 30 years without James T. Kirk in command. Now, we know that technically Decker was in command for a period of time, but that was during a period of refit where the ship never went on any missions. But if Spock had the Enterprise out on actual missions for five years, it makes the reporter's statement seem quite odd.My speculation is that Captain Spock had his own five year mission, and then the Enterprise became a training ship. I'd ignore that statement. But if Spock had the Enterprise out on actual missions for five years, it makes the reporter's statement seem quite odd.

As a teacher on a training mission, I am content to command the Enterprise. If we are to go on actual duty, it is clear that the senior officer on board must assume command.
This is not about age, and you know it. This is about you flying a goddamn computer console when you wanna be out there hopping Galaxies.
Jim, I'm your doctor and I'm your friend. Get back your command. Get it back before you turn into part of this collection. Before you really do grow old.
KIRK
I hate inspections.
SULU
I'm delighted, any chance to go aboard the Enterprise.
KIRK
Mister Scott, you old space dog. You're well?
SCOTT
I had me a wee bout, sir, but Doctor McCoy pulled me through.
KIRK
Oh? A wee bout of what?
McCOY
Shore leave, Admiral.
With all appreciation, sir, I'd prefer to supervise the refit of Enterprise.
A twenty-year space veteran, yet you sure choose the worst duty station in town. I mean, look at this place, this is the hind end of space.
McCOY
Admiral? Wouldn't it be easier to just put an experienced crew back on the ship?
KIRK
Galloping about the cosmos is a game for the young, Doctor.
UHURA
Now what is that supposed to mean?
KIRK
Most of our trainee crew has been reassigned. Lieutenant Saavik and my son, David are exploring the Genesis planet which he helped create. And Enterprise feels like a house with all the children gone.
Oh, that's interesting! I came up with the command school theory on my own about ten years back, but it's neat to know that some of the early publicity on TWOK said the same.IIRC, press releases of the day suggested that Saavik was in Command School, having completed her initial Academy training.

Agreed!I think it's relatively likely that both Scotty and Bones are assigned to the same command, meaning either the Enterprise (in which case "shore leave" is more literal) or Spock's training program.
Spock likely had his own five year mission after Kirk’s two five year missions (TOS TV and TMP).
I thought there was meant to be a 5 year mission following TMP with the TOS crew doing their thing (or at least, that's what decades of novels assumed), then the ship was retired to become a training vessel. My speculation is that Captain Spock had his own five year mission, and then the Enterprise became a training ship. Commander Sulu left then, only to return in TWOK.
