I'm confused. In 1989, Filmation went out of business. In that same year, the episodes were given an official VHS and Beta videotape release (ironically with "the Animated Adventures of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek" on the box covers), the same year that GR declared TAS 'non-canon'. Was there some other successor entity to Filmation that kept TAS non-canon until 2006?

Yes, TAS is canon. The Enterprise crew go though a portal at the centre of the galaxy to a universe of magic, meet Satan and get put on trial in Space Salom. Spock learns magic and then teaches Kirk to shoot rainbow phasers out his fingers.

The Encyclopedias and Omnipedia produced in the 1990s still didn't acknowledge TAS.
I'm fine with it being canon as CBS has now said so on the official website, but the fact is there's still a fanatical atmosphere around anyone pointing out any difference period. Just look how I was treated on the previous page.
There are problems, but it's nothing worse than reconciling SNW's stuff with TOS. We just have to consign Robert April to the same Schrodinger's rank club as Miles O'Brien. The center of the galaxy thing was repeated in ST5 and it's TNG to Voyager that's in contradiction here, not the other way around. Koloth does claim he never fought Kirk but maybe he meant physical combat.
Most of TAS' problems can be fixed easier than SNW's actually with some fan explanations. The problem is you're not even allowed to acknowledge the problems without getting violent comments like "We should staple this to your head" kind of thing (just look at the last page)

How do you fix the journeying to the center of the galaxy compared to Warp 10 being something never achieved by TNG?
You just ignore it. Like how TNG ignored the Ent-A journeying to the center of the galaxy in TFF.
There must be a subspace corridor between Fed space and the center of the galaxy, and we just have to ignore the speed lines given in That Which Survives as the crew making dialogue errors in their panic? Then assume that Voyager DIDN'T fly to the galactic center to use that subspace corridor and cut their journey in half because God would just steal Voyager? That would at least make some sense.
As for the galactic barrier, maybe the planet in TAS was just outside that barrier, to keep up the claim that no one penetrated the barrier before in ST5.
I'm imagining an episode now where Chakotay and Janeway have some major argument whether they should go near the galactic core and take their chances with God or not.

Fimation sold it's library and associated rights around to other groups over the years - I don't even know how it all played out; but by 2006 it was confirmed Paramount had all copyrights related to TAS back 100% - so that's when it was re-canonized.

This was a debate? I considered TAS canon anyway.
In a weird turn of events, the French division of L'Oreal (yes, the makeup company) bought Filmation as part of an effort to diversify its portfolio. (As proof, please refer to this post by Kor in a thread discussing the Playmates action figures, roleplay props and ships.) That was possibly one more factor that had to be ironed out before Paramount could risk adapting any material created for the 1973 animated series to any of the live action series, movies and tie-ins like novels.

I watched this last night. Stellar story, especially for a Saturday morning cartoon.
Maybe going through to the galactic barrier is like going through the wall in a video game - no guarantee you can enter, or exit if you do enter.
