NCIS franchise

You think a new NCIS show that takes one character from all the previous shows to fill out the cast could be successful or would it come across as a gimmick?
Definitely a gimmick to die hard fans. But, gimmick or not, the question is "Would it work?"

I saw somewhere that they referred to NCIS Los Angeles as a second generation spin-off. Would New York technically be a third generation spin-off spun from LA, or still classed as a second generation and spun from OG?

Which then led me to ponder if there had been any third generation spin-offs in the past (DS9/VOY could be considerss second generation, as could Models Inc in relation to BH 90210, maybe Legacies vis a vis Vampire Diaries)

Don't think it would work. Although NCIS is a franchise, all the shows are completely different. This would lead to complete character changes when theyre moved to the new show.

Plot details for season premieres:

"Wayward Son" – While dealing with the fallout from the shooting involving McGee's son, the team investigates a mysterious new threat to the Secretary of the Navy and receives help from an unexpected source: Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), newly arrived in D.C. to open a satellite office of his private security firm.
"Pilot" — After years of special assignments and covert ops, Special Agent Sam Hanna (LL COOL J) returns to his hometown of New York City for a brand-new mission. When Sam's friend and Navy reservist Jack Halloway is found dead, he requests permission from Assistant Special Agent-In-Charge Robyn Wells (Jennifer Beals) to investigate his friend's death. Robyn pairs Sam with roguish agent Nick Schaeffer (Scott Caan), who introduces him to the rest of the team: clean-cut Wyatt Sellers (Shane Harper), bright-eyed Addy Ross (Jacqueline Byers) and hacker-turned-computer guy Sean Sullivan (Devin Druid). As the team investigates Jack's death, they work together to gather key information that can help find the culprits.
"Don't You Forget About Me" — In the present day, ghosts from Leroy Jethro Gibbs' (Mark Harmon) past finally catch up to him, shattering his peaceful retirement in Alaska. In 1992, the team races to rescue a kidnapped Randy (Caleb Foote) while Gibbs (Austin Stowell) and Lala (Mariel Molino) deal with the aftermath of their kiss.

guess the og will get a skip as I can't stand weatherly.

They're limiting themselves to cities with ports. How about NCIS: Las Vegas? They investigate crimes at navy surplus stores.

Oh, holy hell, that is so awesome! Kyle Schmid as Mike Franks is definitely one of the greatest additions to the franchise in years, possibly even ever.

I dunno, to me it says they dont have the confidence in the Origins cast and think they need to drag Harmon in this much to bolster the ratings. Its a sweep weeks gimmick writ large.

Give me a Mike Franks spin-off, and I'll be happy.
I take it as rating boost attempt to get more eyeballs there.

The original NCIS is nearing the 25 year mark
