Book and show spoilers

Hugh in the books was said to have betrayed the Queen with Ulf during the battle, but in the show he hasn't betrayed the Queen yet (also nothing I can see about Ulf attacking both sides). Maybe he'll blame his wife's death on her and the actual betrayal will happen in Season 4

He might have to get in line. Rhaeynera isn't making a lot of friends.

Well, it was definitely better than the season 2 finale. Ormund getting stabbed up the bum and Roderick's "a proper fucking!" line were great. Roderick seemed really happy to be burned to death by a dragon.

I love that everyone who trusted Ulf got screwed over by him.

Aegon's actor continue to rule, loved his delivery of "I'm alive!"

Rhaenyra's descent into madness was very well portrayed by Emma D'Arcy, and much more convincing than Daeny's...but, to be fair, Emilia Clarke didn't get to make a crazy speech or anything, she just got annoyed by some bells and burned everyone (I know there was more to it than that, I'm exaggerating.)

Alyn's turn to being so loyal to Rhaeynra that he was willing to murder the High Septon in the Holy Sept felt a bit quick.

But I still felt like the finale could have gone a bit further. I was expecting Daeron and Gwayne to be killed off here too as I can't imagine there will be much left for them in season 4. Ending on a kind of cliffhanger with Ulf flying away and the other dragons chasing Silverwing was annoying. And where in Seven Hells is Vhagar?

Solid finale but I wasn't fond of the children slaughtering or the image of a pregnant woman killing herself (at least we were spared seeing it happen). Yeah, yeah, this is a dark HBO show and it's worse in the books. Doesn't make it any less disgusting.

Like the end of the last season, I'm not sure if I'll return or not but I am a little more curious about certain threads. Oh, wait, the fourth season is the final one. Okay, fine. I'll be back. Got to see the misery to its bitter end, I suppose.

Couldn't happen to a better asshole (pun intended). I'm glad we didn't have to wait three seasons to see him die, unlike Cristan.

Roderick was a great character this season and that was 100% because of Tommy Flanagan. Every show needs more Tommy Flanagan. :D

I love that everyone who trusted Ulf got screwed over by him.
That's what happens when you trust a drunken bastard.

Rhaenyra's descent into madness was very well portrayed by Emma D'Arcy,
Yes, she has been absolutely stellar this season and I loved watching that descent.

Alyn's turn to being so loyal to Rhaeynra that he was willing to murder the High Septon in the Holy Sept felt a bit quick.
Perhaps but he was one of the many characters I don't care about so I didn't even notice.

Rhaenyra made a good argument for the protection against the doom from the north.
But then we know even dragons are not a guarantee of protection.

Regarding the Dragon Chase towards the end of the episode with Ulf riding Silverwing while being chased by Caraxes with Vermithor close behind them both. Both Silverwing and Vermithor are a mating pair and so Caraxes, without her rider, has to be careful. She was outnumbered two to one. So it made sense for the Blacks to retreat as the Greens have air superiority around Tumbleton now.

Ormund revealed himself to be a hypocrite once again. Saying he is a follower of the Seven and yet willing to put children in harm's way during the battle to gain an advantage. Disgusting religious hypocrite.

I saw a comment from youtube which goes something like this.

"Daemon is a Targaryen supremacist. He believes in reviving Old Valyria within Westeros whereas Ormund is an Andal supremacist more than willing to overthrow Targaryen rule and bring back the faith of the seven as the glue that holds the seven kingdoms together. Both of them are extemists on opposite sides."

The murder of the high septon is just going to make things worse for Queen Rhaenyra. The people of Westeros take their faith seriously. Queen Rhaenyra has shown disdain for it by killing their "pope".

The actor protraying Aegon, once again hit it out of the park with his acting. Damn good actor.

i am gonna miss Helaena. :(

A review of the season 3 finale....SPOILERS

Daenerys did nothing wrong. This is one of those controversial hot takes that I'm sure a bunch of fans will shout is wrong but until the 20th century, if you did not surrender when under siege, then you forfeited the right to be treated with quarter. The people of Kings Landing would know this and certainly so would Cersei (who wouldn't care). Throw in the fact that until several days into filming that Daenerys didn't deliberately burn the city to the ground but it ignited all of the wildfire stores throughout the city (which you can still see the green plumbs of in the special effects). Daenerys saved the world and was murdered by a deranged traumatized soldier that was probably suffering from the effects of black magic.

I bring this up because it's interesting to see how "The Treasons of Tumbleton" contrast her with Rhaenyra the Cruel. For many years, Fire and Blood fans have taken the attitude Rhaenyra was RightTM and were Team Black. Aegon the Second was a scheming villain and usurper that just happened to have been named the true heir of Viserys by a misogynist society. Like the Brackens versus Blackwoods, the narrative is very clear that while both sides are flawed, the author's sympathy is with the Blacks. The show, to my surprise, has taken the narrative risk of making it clear Rhaenyra was utterly unfit to rule. Aegon II was a spoiled, horrible manchild, and much worse but our one scene of him ruling showed he actually cared about the Smallfolk in at least a vague sense. Rhaenyra just wants to be worshiped by them.

This episode has Rhaenyra drive her cousin Helaena to suicide, abandon Mysaria (who at least nominally was on the side of the peasantry), murder the High Septon while claiming the Targaryens are not beholden to Andal gods, and claim the status of the Prince who was Promised. This despite the only people on Earth who know of the prophecy are Rhaenyra and Daemon themselves. Her journey from hero to villain even has a cool costume switch despite the fact the Queen Who Ever Was never bothered to enter battle despite having a dragon of her own.

The sacking of Tumbleton is the centerpiece for this episode and meant to be our version of the Battle of the Gullet. Ultimately, it's more a comedy of errors and if I don't appreciate his changes to George R.R. Martin's story, I understand Ryan Condall's thesis. There's no heroic epic fantasy heroes in the Dance of the Dragon. There's just a bunch of scheming not very competent people fighting over a chair. Ormund Hightower's evil plots all come to naught because his traitor is a drunk and fool.

My heart goes out most to the character of Helaena who never wanted to play the Game of Thrones and resisted every time someone tried to make her a murderer or a gamepiece. Here, she takes herself off the board in a dramatic way and I have to say that it is well done. Aegon and Aemond reunite themselves, which makes no sense but one of the major flaws of HotD is that the characters go wildly off script then have to return to the script in order for the plot to make sense. It was the same thing that happened to the Witcher season three on Netflix where they had to make massive character changes once audiences rejected their attempted veering from the books.

In conclusion, this is a fairly decent climax for the penultimate season. Rhaenyra falling to evil while Aegon becomes a far more capable leader after his ordeal (or perhaps just powered by hate) makes the climax of the Dance far more interesting. Still, a lot of the characters had to do nonsensical busywork to give them something to do like Alicent's plotting against her sons. Was it an improvement over season two, though? Absolutely. I'm also looking forward to the Aegon the Conqueror movie and the next season of Ser Duke's adventures.

I was glad to see Ormund get his due. I felt sad for Helaena - in a better world, she would've been a slightly flaky naturalist, studying insects. But I understand why she committed suicide. Good to see both Aemond and Aegon have grown up a bit. Ulf proves you should never trust a drunkard. Rhaenyra has lost her damn mind.

Politically yes what she done is stupid but jesus I would find it hard not to stab a few High Septons.

In her case I also can't help but think it's not paranoia if they really are all out to get you.

Finally got around to watching the finale.

It's been an odd season, I've kinda had to force myself to watch each episode, yet when I have I've really enjoyed them. Does that make any sense?

Glad to see Ormund get stabbed up the bum, Ulf basically turning on everyone was probably to be expected. Where the hell does he go from here I wonder? Guess his only hope is to throw his lot in with Aegon?

So Alys is not strictly speaking a witch, she was cursed a hundred years ago to never die? Basically she's Gary Oldman's Dracula? ;)

Poor Helaena :(

Glad Gwayne survived, seems to be one of the few decent characters!

D'Arcy yet again is magnificent. I've always rooted for Rhaenyra but seems she's going the way of many Targaryens.

Daemon was Daemon but Matt plays him so well, thought his look of horrified resignation when he saw Tumbelton had been burned to the ground was well done.

Definitely needed more Oliva Cooke but at least Alicent showed up at the end.

So will season four basically be Rhaenyra Vs. Aegon now?

One thing I damn well hate about this show, and it's Martin's fault, too many characters whose names start with A, and whose names are very similar. Aegon/Aemond, Alicent/Alys etc

Yup, that makes perfect sense to me. I felt much the same.

My heart went out to her during that reveal. A classic mythological tragedy. Right up my alley.

Honestly, after so many asshole characters, this is my biggest issue with the show. If I can't keep up with the characters and most of them are assholes, why exactly am I suppose to care? This is entirely on Martin. The show did the best it could, I guess, but really the only reason I keep coming back is for certain actors. Without the cast, I would've bailed a long time ago.

It's possible to be an asshole or even not be a nice person and still be engaging and empathetic, but the show doesn't really have a hero character, outside of maybe noble knights like Gwayne or Tyland and they're usually working for bad guys.

Too often in any battle you're rooting for the lesser of two evils rather than the good guys per se. I think it's too late in the day for a Jon Snow to turn up (originally I expected Ser Criston Cole to be that character, but obviously that idea went south very quickly)

I'll take compelling assholes any day over a piece of cardboard like Jon Snow.
