Spoilers Lanterns discussion thread

  • Thread starter The Nightmare Doctor
  • Start date
That was quite good. More R rated that expected. But it is HBO.
Chuckled at Jason Ritter showing up as a lawyer and the son of a powerful man. I'm a Matlock fan.
I've got a feeling John Stewart, Sr was passed over to be a Green Lantern when Hal got the ring and that's why he's training Junior to be fearless.
Not sure how Guy fits in with there only being one GL on Earth.

But from the trailer and the character descriptions it looks like Paul Ben-Victor's Antaan is the alien on Earth who the plot is revolving around. But we do see Hal talking to Sinestro in what appears to be some kind of prison in one of the trailers, so he might still connect somehow to whatever's going on in Rushville.

I'm thinking Macon Ranch might be a prison for aliens. Antaan might be the warden and Macon's boss.

Off to an excellent start. I'm loving the dynamic between Hal and John and I believed John when he told Kerry that he respects Hal, despite how shitty Hal acts towards John or, well, anyone else. So far the greater mystery is pretty generic but I imagine it'll get more interesting as it involves.

I appreciated how William Macon, at least on the surface, is someone who is relatively reasonable regarding colonialism and the ironies of his fear about being on the receiving end of it while living on the land that once belonged to the Sioux. We'll see how long that sophisticated perspective lasts as his fears and hatred increases.

I figured we would learn that Hal would die but I didn't expect that reveal to be so soon...and that it would be in the first most forward time setting.

Doesn't make his shooting apples off of John's head with a pistol any less incredibly fucked up. The way John casually mentioned it to Noah is pretty damn telling. I really hope the show digs into that psychology and not casually treat it as some kind of "father was training son to be something greater" moment.

It is definitely fucked up.

The trailers were right, this is just True detective with a few seconds of special effects stuck in the show. Oh and you see a bit of a Green Lantern costume, and its cheaper then the worst CW Arrowverse costume ever was. I rewatched the 2011 Green Lantern movie last night and while its a bad movie its still much better then this, at least it was a real GL story that wasn't embarassed to be a GL movie.

I hate True Detective and shows like that, and since this is literally that I'm done. A garbage show made by people who hate superheroes for people who hate superheroes, aka the Andor of superhero shows. I'm sure snobs and superhero haters will love it just as much as Star Wars haters love that show.

What's a real "Green Lantern" story? This story takes advantage of Lanterns being law enforcement and science fiction. How is that not a Green Lantern story?

What do you hate about True Detective? Something specific.

You hate Andor. What a surprise. Multilayered, complex and compelling storytelling must not be your thing.

The accusation that creator X doesn't like superheroes because their take might be different than yours is getting old and tired. It's also not true. Maybe give it a rest? Try and come up with some sort of intelligent and well thought out critique instead?

I've been a superhero fan for longer than you've been alive. ( And a Star Wars fan too). Still love super-heroes in all their different presentations. From camp comedy to gritty realism. All are valid.

Loved every minute of it, great start to the show.

As i said previously i like seeing Kyle Chandler in anything he does and this is no exception. I like the veteran vibe he gives off, been there and done it and with experience comes the right to go off path. Together with his don't give a shit character it makes for a great combo especially if you pair him up with a too tight newcomer, who's itching to become a Green Lantern so he can fulfill daddy's expectations and what he believes is owed to him because he believes he's special.

The vibe of the first episode and where they are is also very cool and just so far removed from what someone would expect from a show about intergalactic space cops wearing one of the most powerful devices in the universe on their finger - that contrast simply worked.

Setting up the storyline at two different times also serves to create mystery, especially given how the episode ends so i can't wait for next week.

Question for comicbook experts ( i'm no DC "expert"):

Choosing a new Lantern - i always assumed that a Lantern was tasked with policing one sector and when they die ( can and do Lanterns retire the normal way?) the Ring goes out and finds the nearest suitable candidate and makes them the offer, this is how Hal Jordan was chosen and how he describes it to John. Now i don't get how and why John Steward is chosen?
Did his father wave his hands to get the attention of the guys on Oa, did he fill out an application or what?

I mean the show might explain its version at some point but how does it usually happen in the comics?

IIRC the ring had three choices: Hal, John and Guy. Hal was the closest, so he got the ring. Guy and John stayed "on file" in case Hal was incapacitated. The ring went to Guy a few times. Then to John when Guy was unavailable. That's the 70s version.

The main story we are watching is set in 2016. The end of the story, 10 years later is in 2026, the back up is from 2006, and Superman went public in 2022.

There's plenty of time for Hal to lose his Ring, and Guy accepts his destiny.

I’m assuming Guy got the ring instead of John for some reason.

They are obviously going to lean into Abin Sur saying "Are you afraid" and Daddy Stewart said "Yes." However in the comics, I think it was John who freaked out when he found out that it was only a matter of 50 miles as to why he was not Green Lantern, and Hal Jordan was. The "computer" thought proximity was more important than character or education.

How utterly unexpected.

1) I think something changes about there only being one Lantern between 2016 and 2026 because otherwise John would not expect to find a ring on Hal's hand anyway as Guy would have it.

2) Something happens to Hal between 2006 and 2016 which is why his back-up is nicer and seems puzzled by his current self. The situation with Sinestro?

3) On the John situation, I think viewers might miss that he's unusual as he is chosen by the Guardians not the ring. It's there in the dialogue but easy to miss.

Overall I thought that was great, both actors are entirely perfect for their roles.

Thinking about this — there is one way to square "Only one Lantern per sector".

Sometime between 2016 and 2026, Hal and his ring disappeared. John, for plot reasons, declines to be his replacement. The Guardians need a replacement for 2814 but they also want someone on Earth to discover as a secondary mission what happened to Hal and the Ring - the answer is Guy.

That would allow the season to end with both being Green Lantern.

So. A day ending in "Y" then.
