What’s a former controversy that seems to have died out?

I'd like to think the whole "Trekker vs Trekkie" nonsense is fading away, but that may be wishful thinking. If I had a credit for everytime somebody has scolded me on-line for using the "wrong" term:

"If you were a real Trek fan, you'd know that 'Trekkie' is an offensive slur. True fans call themselves Trekkers."

Meanwhile, the real problem with the whole Trekkie/Trekker thing that, once the debate gets going, no two people can agree on what the difference is! :)

I remember that. I would just state that the name of the documentary on Star Trek fans was called "Trekkies" and then grab some popcorn and enjoy the fireworks that came afterward.

Call me a Trekkie, Trekker or Star Trek fan. I don't care. But seeing people get riled up over such a first world problem was always enjoyable.

I haven't heard either for years. I just call myself a Star Trek fan. :D

Likewise. I've been a fan for more than fifty years. I think the first place I encountered the Trekker vs Trekkie thing was in the short-lived All About Star Trek Fan Clubs Magazine circa 1976-77, when I was 13 or 14. I thought they both sounded silly and decided I'd just call myself a Star Trek fan. Still works for me.

The main problem with that is they are or were just trying to mark their territory, if you know what I mean, and make it seem like it's important. It's not.

A few people looked on "Trekkie" as being derogatory. People who show up for jury duty in their Starfleet uniforms.

In the 70s, I do remember arguments about "Roddenberry vs. Gene Coon" Trek. basically the "True Fans" only believed in the first few episodes before Mr. Coon's involvement, I do remember a rather heated discussion during the Sacramento S.T.A.R. Star Trek Convention in '75 at Sac City College..they almost started a fight, but the Convention Security (Dressed as TOS Klingons) put a stop to it...

What I remember is people dumping on the third season because Roddenberry stepped away and Freiberger took over. And because it wasn't as good as the first two seasons.

Yes, but this was a very weird group, The only true Trek had GRs complete involvement (with John DF Black as his co-producer).. no Gene Coon (who added a bit more humor to each story, to lighten the mood ) It must have been tough on them, only considering 8 episodes to be True Unadulterated Star Trek. Everyone agreed on Freiberger's mishandling of the 3rd season though and they also agreed that Space 1999 wasn't a worthy successor to Star Trek (I happen to think that Space 1999's first season was a completely different type of show..though Freiberger utterly slopped up the second season of that show as well)

All true and I hate the third season, but I always give Freiberger a pass. He was dumped into a show the network no longer cared about, most of the experienced creative, including Rodenberry, had left and a budget that was cut so low that no producer could have made look good.

Huh. Unless there’s something I’m unaware of, I can’t understand being against Coon’s fairly seminal work on the show.

I think he actually did a decent job. 🤷‍♂️

I am also a fan of the fact that the cut budgets resulted in more shipboard stories rather than it always being the planet of the week.
