Decanonization Time!

Oh, I've seen it. Gene's Vision™ is a BBS meme for a reason. "Upset," of course, may not be literal, because who knows how posters really feel. But figuratively upset, posting pushback against an idea because it goes against G'sV™, absolutely. It does happen.

Agreed that there's general agreement that his creative instincts sometimes missed the mark. Sometimes yes, but whether it's often or quite often, probably mileage varies. I think there's also agreement, if not general agreement then certainly some agreement, that his rewrites on TOS produced good results, generally improving the material, and were largely responsible for the consistent overall tone and feel of the series, which was greatly to its benefit. There's a very wide chasm between giving credit where credit is due and veneration (not that you're saying otherwise), and of course Roddenberry was not the sole important creative force present.
I think that's fair. And, of course, I think there is widespread agreement that TOS Roddenberry, TMP Roddenberry, and TNG Roddenberry were three very different things. Still, I guess just the description of him as St. Gene doesn't quite strike me as accurate given what I've seen here over years.

All three Genes managed to antagonize their associates in the course of making the shows and film.

Did TOS Gene manage that? Robert Justman, DC Fontana, David Gerrold, etc. always spoke fondly and complimentary of him up to the point of working with him on TNG. And though Gene L. Coon died long before the TNG days, my understanding was that he and Roddenberry were on good terms as well. I've not heard of a ton of friction involving Roddenberry and his TOS associates. Really, most of that starts with TMP as far as I know.

He antagonized John D.F. Black at the beginning of the first season.

Fair enough. But every workplace is going to have some disagreement, and Hollywood is famous for temperamental people. However, it doesn't seem like that there was anywhere near the rancor around the TOS offices like there would later be with TMP and TNG.

Just retcon canon back to being a collection of works.
Why retcon? That’s what it has always been. Just because people don’t understand something doesn’t mean we need to cater to their lack of understanding.

Continuity is the problem (for some). Broad strokes are enough for it to work (see, well…all of Star Trek).

(I know you specifically are aware of all of this, but it still boggles the mind that there remains so much confusion more generally.)

Just an observation: Many fans approach fandom as fans first and not, say, as students of literature or by learning what canon means in other contexts first. They learn terms in a different order and in different contexts, perhaps, than others learn them.

How so?
I've expounded on it quite thoroughly in multiple Enterprise threads. I'm not going to type another novel about it here. My reasoning is on record, however.
