Sam Neill, Jurassic Park actor, dies aged 78

The New Zealand actor, who was born in Northern Ireland, died in Sydney. "The loss was sudden and unexpected," his family says.

Shocked and saddened by this. Just watched the Jurassic films a couple of weeks ago.

Still remember him from things like Merlin, and In the Mouth of Madness. Lotta folk dying in their 70s now. Has human life expectancy dropped lately?

Very sad news. He was born in Omagh, County Tyrone and is regarded as one of our own (even if his Belfast accent in peaky Blinders was less than 100% accurate, bless). Always seemed to be a lovely man offscreen in interviews and social media. And, of course, always great onscreen - watched him recently in the latest season of the Twelve and he was as good as always, could easily have passed for a decade younger. One of the best James Bonds who never was (even if he, with characteristic modesty felt he was all wrong for the role).

Dammit this makes me very sad. Everything I saw him in he was fantastic. He didn't let his cancer get him down and worked pretty much still the end. He has two movies that will be posthumously released now.

No life expectancy is still around mid 70's. It took a dip for a bit during the pandemic. He had blood cancer that he said he no longer had. According to his family his death was sudden and unrelated. 78 while it may seem too young to die is a tough age for most people and things can turn on a dime health wise.

This one stings because he's always been a favourite actor of mine, going all the way back to Riley Ace of Spies and Omen III!

And he's in one of my comfort films, Event Horizon.

Was always brilliant.

Sam was one of those actors who may have been in some bad films, but his performances never were.

I never want to reduce an actor to their films when they die, but Sam Neill is on my shelf a fair bit and I just want to highlight that.

Yeah I was also thinking maybe all the chemo did other stuff to the body they were unaware of. The great thing about Sam Neil was that he was always positive and didn't let the cancer diagnosis consume him.

I know a lot of people didn't like Jurassic World Dominion. I personally loved it but now it means even more since it was Sam's last appearance as Doctor Grant. It was a nice ending for the character and I'm glad they got the old trio of characters back together for one final time.

Event Horizon freaked me out!

So many good things he was in, but for some reason I’ll always think of him as Damian (and that movie wasn’t even very good!). Maybe that’s where I first encountered him.

I think Reilly: Ace of Spies for me first and then Omen III. The actor who would later prove to be the nicest man on Twitter was remarkably effective as the antichrist!

My he thrive in the glorious afterlife of Montana. Yes, that OMEN needed work, and, yes, Jonathan Scott Taylor was claws down the finest Damien, but Sam gave us the finest faux Russian executive officer since Alan Arkin.

I think those were an influence. Though I believe Carey made April British. I made April from a colony settled by New Zealanders and Aussies. (Because Sam Neill)
