Starfleet Academy Comics

Issue #1 is pretty decent - takes place before 1x06 (we don't see B'avi or Dzolo, but Tarima is still in the War College) and makes some of the response by Ake in 1x07 make more sense vis a vis Genesis. The reasons for Tarima being in the test group are a little shaky (her leadership skills which, after her introduction seemed to get set aside) and Kyle being included because he's - athletic. That's a backhanded compliment. Some of the art isn't great, Caleb doesn't always look like Caleb, and there are times where Tarima and Genesis look too similar, but some of the art is great. The opening shot of the Athena - chef's kiss.

Looking forward to #2

^ Thanks for that review, @tenmei! That more or less tracks with what I’ve been gathering from the preview pages released thus far. I've ordered the first three issues (plus the Star Trek Celebrations 2026 special) and hopefully will be able to read it myself soon. :)

Issue #2 gives us some action on the Athena, although the artist cannot draw Picardo to save their lives and Kelrec is borderline unrecognisable, both visually and character wise. Kelrec has a beef with Caleb and is going to "borrow" a shuttle to go down and rescue the Cadets. The inner ring around the command chair apparently has built in control stations we never saw in the show, and pretty sure its the same shot of Athena from Issue #1. Jay-Den's motives to go rogue from the group seem a bit nebulous, but at least it moves forward the Jay-Den/Kyle relationship from where it seemed to sit in 1x05 to them being a couple, also neatly explaining why Commander Tomov was assigned as Chaperone in 1x06. Whilst #1 was a decent issue, #2 is obviously a bit iffy.

The Celebrations Short takes place before Lost Contact but after 1x05 and sees Jay-Den and Kyle become a couple. Unfortunately, the art feels a bit off and the plot feels like it could have been done better. But maybe that's just me. Am I old?

^ Unfortunately I still wasn’t able to read those issues yet, because I ordered the first three issues plus “Celebrations” as a bundle and they’ll only mail that to me once issue #3 is released. Bummer.

My guess for why the plot on the “Celebrations” short might feel undercooked would be that Karim is (I assume) a first-time writer. As for the art, I have to say that from what I've seen it looks pretty solid to me. Nothing super special, but totally fine. Here’s artist Andrew Drilon with a short video on his work for this …

As for “Lost Contact”: Is it possible the art was created before Raoul Bhaneja was cast as Kelrec? Although just in general I have to say that I tend to get less hung up about likenesses in Star Trek comics than the average reader seems to be. IMHO, likeness is way overrated, and I think when a character drawing feels alive and dynamic, with emotions that are readable and a distinct and unique art style then that’s much more important to me than getting the actors’ faces right. I loved, for example, the “N-Vector” miniseries from the 2000s from artist Toby Cypress, where the characters looked super stylized and very animated …

Its possible it was drawn before Bhaneja was cast, thats true.

Oh, i was not a fan of the N Vector art at all, I only read it as it was in a collection with the New Frontier comic, and for the sole visual appearance of Tiris Jast.

Finally received the first two issues of Lost Contact and the Celebrations one shot in the mail and was able to sit down this weekend and dive into them at last:

The mini series is starting a bit slow and some of the characterizations don’t ring true for me at all, which I guess can be explained by the fact that the short was written well before the first season even aired. As @tenmei mentioned earlier, especially Kelrec and Jay-Den feel way off in their characterization (and to the extent she’s even in there, so does Tarima). Not completely incompatible with the show, I guess, but still: The way Kelrec loses his cool on the Athena and Jay-Den is constantly at odds with Genesis for whatever reason on the planet just feel wrong.

What I do like is that they chose to focus the story on Genesis, which they haven’t done on the show. The plot feels thin and a bit jumbled though. It comes across overly simple while at the same time moving at a glacial pace. However, I did like the concept of them having to communicate visually, and I’m curious to see where the story will go with it in the coming issues.

The art is serviceable enough, but some design choices seem odd, like how characters repeatedly use old-style push buttons or a holographic device displaying data looks almost like a 21st century projector. Not to mention the inexplicable use of Discovery EV suits in the 31st century and the limited angles on the Athena.

I’m pleasantly surprised by the Celebrations short, though. All the stories are super cute and hit just the right notes for me. The truncated storylines seem perfect for some small slice-of-life-ish moments of some of Trek’s queer characters, and I think they managed to collect some nice variety in terms of tone and style. Both the Lower Decks and Starfleet Academy shorts very much feel like they depict moments that could very well have happened on those shows respectively. The others still feel true to the characters they are about, but I have a harder time imagining an episode of Picard actually depicting Seven and Raffi having a romantic adventure on the holodeck or one of the Kelvin movies taking the time to show how Sulu met his husband. Interestingly, though, those two are probably my favorites shorts in the collection. The Seven/Raffi story is very rewarding for old school Voyager fans, and the writer for the Sulu story got Kelvin-McCoy just right.

My favorite art, however, is the one from the Chapel story, which feels very loose and almost like fan art, and yet it neatly captures Jess Bush’s look and mannerisms (even though her story feels a bit forced, since they only ever paid lip service to her being bi on the show). What I find curious is that the cover art by artist Adelle Kincel depicts Adira and Gray, although they are not represented with a story inside the special, but omits Jay-Den and Kyle, which leads me to believe their story might have been a last minute addition when the cover was already done.

Has anyone read the 2024 Celebrations issue? Is it similar in quality?
