A contract has been signed with Boeing for a pile of drone tankers for carrier ops.

But ye gods, the the price per unit. Over all contract is worth $15bil but and each drone is $181 million making them far more expensive then that aircraft they'll be tanking.

But it's been a program that's got the hallmarks of recent boeing projects - over budget and waaaaay behind schedule.

And they're about $700mil in the red on it.

That one was crazy but hey had it not been we might not have had the V22 Osprey

Apparently this issue has happened before, this is the 3rd case.

Somebody pulled the Landing Gear retraction lever and a pin wasn't stuck in the appropriate hole inside the wheel well to prevent the Landing Gear from retracting while on the ground.

Why isn't there some kind of sensor or alarm for that kind of thing?

There's an story about the early versions of the F-16, when on the ground and during maintenance a tech hit the landing gear button and the aircraft did retract the landing gear resulting in quite a bit of damage to the aircraft and the tech's ego, could be true but also an urban legend.

Google says it was during a high speed taxi test when the aircraft briefly lifted off.

Gear up is the first thing done after lift off so it was probably habit to the pilot though usually after confirming a positive rate of climb.

Otherwise the only way it can happen is if the maintenance doesn't put the pin in when the aircraft is parked.

though there have been incident where gear retraction hasn't been possible because the pin was left in.

I think this is one of the designs that will truly replace regular helicopters moving forwards.

Helicopters can take off and land in very limited spaces, can this thing take off and land vertically? But yeah some really incredible flying here. That bit where the main rotor almost stops

Yes, it's still a Helicopter at the end of the day, just because they changed the Tail Rotor to Double Pusher Propeller doesn't stop it from being a Helicopter.

It's just more efficient at doing its job.

That's fair enough.

I wonder if they can put the main rotor into full lock and use the pushers
They can't, they just slow the rotors as they fly faster, the "Double V" Closed Wings takes about 50% of the lift load while the rotors slow down so they don't need to lift as much and delay approaching the Mach Speed Rotor Tip limit.
The AirBus RACER wikipedia entry says it can operate on a single pusher if necessary at reduced cruise speeds.

That's impressive. I wonder if it will ever become commercial or remain a prototype

It reminds me of the Piaggio P.180 Avanti.
I love that design, a very unique aircraft, truly the Ferrari of the skies.
But there are a few mods I would want on the P.180 based on some of it's alternate designs that I would want meshed into the base design.
Nothing major, but enough to give it ridiculous performance for it's category.
