This was aggressively okay. But not "average means 5/10" average, more "average means 7/10 average" if that makes sense. I will say M'Benga's character seems to be more focused on the Klingon War than him being a doctor sometimes, but I don't know how to feel about that yet. I'll have a more definitive take after seeing what they do with him next season. Still, I enjoyed it. I will also say, people seem to hate Pike's lax captaining style, but I think it's interesting to see since it's a nice difference from the other Treks (at least the ones Ive seen so far).

PICARD isn't canon.
I'm not one to remove things from personal canon but there is a 1% air of sadness watching Lower Decks or Prodigy knowing they're only a few years away from all the Picard stuff. That being said I still wish they lasted long enough to see a different show take on those events.

Finally got around to watching this!

This is supposed to be a completely off-the-books mission. So, how is Pike going to explain the loss of a shuttle to Starfleet?

Also minor detail, but I liked the use of a viridium tracker, like the viridium patch in STVI.

Shrinkage, give Scotty and Pelia access to the parts bin and they'll build a replacement.

I just watched this show and I have to say the Klingons sure are ruthless in wanting revenge against Dr. Menbenga. This show having zombies in it was intense. i liked Ortegas outsmarting the Klingons and rescuing their people. It was good she was a combat veteran and knew how out-manuver the enemy and finding heir ship and get everyone out safely even though she tricked Una into doing the plan she suggested.Even if she got punished for it.

Ortegas didn't do anything except needlessly and recklessly endanger the lives of her crewmates. The Captain and M'Benga would have escaped all on their own without Ortegas' "help".

I'm not big on zombies, either. Not even the kind that can be defeated just by pouring them into a tall glass and drinking them.

Presumably the chimera plant has nothing to do with the chimera chili that figures prominently in one of ADF's "Mad Amos" short stories (the hard part, according to Amos, is finding chimera meat).

I gave it an 8. A zombie story, but one that's actually good.

My season 3 rewatch continues…

Pretty good episode. Some nice jump scares. A good, proper kickoff to Ortegas’s PTSD storyline and a fun albeit brief introduction to the big bad for the season.

Ya know…Ortegas was right. Her plan was the correct one. She didn’t know the shuttle was available, the Klingons were on the prowl and they hadn’t checked in for 6 hrs. Una was playing it way too safe. That said, no excuse for Ortegas forcing her hand.

My major problem with the episode is the M’Benga stuff. Now we know for sure he murdered the Ambassador and once again “Captain Dad” just gives him the “awww shucks, I understand” treatment. Hell, Ortegas got punished way harder for disobeying orders than M’Benga did for killing a guy. For once I want to see Pike really get mad at someone a chew their ass out. Show me he can be the CO not just their buddy.

I put it at an 8 at the premiere. I’d stick with that.

I didn't love them removing the ambiguity of M'Benga's actions, because as a viewer I'd rather be left uncertain and troubled by some kinds of stories.
