Is it time to put Star Trek to rest?

Hey! The cartoon crossover was the best part of SNW season 2! Well, except for the very Star Trek episode with the time travel. And the very serious episode about Dr M'Benga.

But yeah, Star Trek is currently aiming younger than it ever has in order to get new viewers, while throwing the occasional bone to the existing audience to keep them turning up. But a lot of the existing Trek audience started watching the more mature shows as kids and loved them. They don't need to twist Trek into something unrecognisable just to pull in people who aren't interested, when I'm sure there are still young sci-fi fans in the world.

Also I haven't seen that puppet episode yet, but it can fuck off. Is there a puppet episode of For All Mankind? Maybe I should be checking that out.

Haha. No puppet episode of FAM. I just started watching it a couple weeks ago and can't stop gushing about it. Its what Trek should aspire to be.

I wonder if we'll ever revisit the Kelvin timeline? If Star Trek is in need of a reboot, then perhaps following a period if rest, return to the Kelvin timeline, which is free of much of the backstory and continuity of the original timeline. No worries about stepping on canon, and an opportunity to introduce new takes on characters and lore.

I would rather it be completely unthetered from the prime universe. A complete reboot.

Is the Kelvin timeline not already sort of that?
No. Because it's a branch off from the prime universe that Nero and TOS Spock created. A complete reboot they would not have to worry about what characters they would use and the general backstory etc. They would not even have to use the Enterprise. Just keep the basic premise of Starfleet/Federation etc. and go from there.

I get what you're saying, though part of me feels the Kelvin timeline is there, and set up to carry on in a way both new and familiar. It provides a connection that a lot of fans would value, whilst keeping open the door to a lot of new interpretations.

Does it make sense to aim for Star Trek to be "more mature?"
There's only been one Game of Thrones in the history of television, and it fell apart as soon as it wasn't closely following material written by a master of character logic.

I don't think it needs to be Game of Thrones level. Not at all. But more mature than it's been lately, yes. It doesn't need to be all excessive swearing, borderline pornographic sex, graphic violence, or anything like that. It just needs to not feel like it's aimed at kids and adults who think like kids, and I feel like SFA and SNW are. I prefer something that doesn't feel like it's essentially a live-action cartoon. "Lessons", "The Pegasus", "Rejoined", "Rules of Engagement", episodes like that. Maybe a little bit passed that. Mad Men and, yes, For All Mankind are around the level I'm thinking of. That's what I'd prefer.

TMP was rated G (yes, with an asterisk and all), but at the same time is the most mature Star Trek film...

I haven't really watched the streaming series other than Picard (though I've tried all of them except Academy), so I was coming from a "traditional" viewpoint.

Historically, Star Trek had a good balance between accessibility to adults and sophistication for children (and grown up sophisticated children). I wouldn't want to see that lost in an attempt to correct for this era's deficiencies.
