Could Star Trek V been saved?

We don't have to. The line clearly was about Spock, and Kirk's actual brother was completely forgotten by everyone, including Shatner.
And I frankly doubt that Bennet or anyone else watched all 79 episodes of TOS. Most likely he picked out the better known or regarded ones. I suppose "Space Seed" was included amongst those (although I don't think it made that many best episode lists at the time).

Eh, the humor in TUC was meta in some spots ("I can't believe I kissed you," "Must have been your lifelong ambition" was about Shatner not Kirk), Chekov - as you say - was made to look like an idiot for the sake of humor (the entire Crewman Dax scene is awful). The whole "Klingon outpost" scene reeks of an overbaked gag that dilutes the tension. The movie is FILLED with jokes when it should be tight, tense and suspenseful.

Yeah, the humor in TFF reflects Shatner's sens of humor, but there are some great subtle jokes as well. But agreed, some of it is juvenile and ill placed.

There were plenty of younger commandos in the landing party. They were the guys loading their weapons in the shuttle craft.

Uhura's outfit wasn't skin tight - and if she was and you didn't like it that's really on you. But nothing she wore was inappropriate or offensive.

She did have a naked fan dance, which people complain about. Mostly because they see it as demeaning even though Nichelle enjoyed doing it.

Nothing new to Star Trek, honestly.
Yeah, skimpy outfits should be left to 7 of 9, or T-Pol... no one wants to see grandma in a skimpy outfit :-)

at least I didn't, but even then the whole scene was a bit gratuitous despite her outfit.

as far as the plot, imo it was the whole idea of biting off more than you can chew. I think if they had stayed with the cult motif that might have been more resonating, and interesting....you know, drawing parallels to Branch Dividians, or the Peoples Temple (Jim Jones), even a Charles Manson theme...so many possibilities even current day Political trends (hint, hint)

ultimately the movie suffered from the ST odd number curse :-)

No, that was the effect. I want to know why it was necessary.
It wasn't necessary from a logistical standpoint of the show, if that's what you mean, from a ratings standpoint it was effective, "sex appeal" sells is as old as movies and TV themselves.
They've even done this with the latest series, the locker room scene where they showed Genesis Lythe's impressive gluteus maximus in her underwear, for example...that was fun!!

Then what was it?
an appeal to certain demogrophics, including women who often commented on their admiration of Jeri Ryan's physique...

again as long as movies and TVs have been around, this has been employed. Sometimes that is what reigns people in, and then they might become vested in the show.
